Lady Pens Golf History
This program began in 1996 and has had only one coach in its existence, Roseann Schwartz. In four years of competition in the Mid-Con, YSU had 10 all-conference selections. Stephanie Matasek was the conference’s Newcomer of the Year in 1999 and was a three-time all-conference selection. Matasek also had two runner-up individual finishes at the Mid-Con meet.
In the spring of 2003, the Penguins became the first YSU women’s program to earn a Horizon League Championship winning the inaugural league women’s golf title by 10 strokes over Loyola. Lori Hatcher won the individual championship while Gina Abruzzino placed third and Jennifer Grossi placed fifth. In 2004, YSU led after two rounds, but could not hold their lead placing third. In 2005 and 2006, the Penguins placed second while in 2007 they came in third.
