Penguins Tennis History

 

The program began in 1937 under Willard Webster before being halted for World War II in 1942. The program was back in 1947 and has been a sport ever since. Currently, Coach Mark Klysner leads the program and is the 17th coach in school history.

The past 4-seasons, under Klysner, has been sensational. The men finished third in the conference for the second straight year. YSU was led by first-team All-Horizon League pick Silviu Mistreanu and the conference's Newcomer of the Year, Sebastian Hagn. The Penguins picked up their first win over UIC since joining the league and won at Wright State for the first time in nearly 30 years. The Guins defeated the Flames 4-3 in the Horizon League tournament, just the program's second postseason dual win since joing the conference.In Klysner's first three seasons, the men have won 10 Horizon League matches. In the previous nine years, the Penguins combined to win just three.

The Penguins’ best Mid-Con conference finish was fourth in 1998 at the Mid-Con meet. Since 1992, Youngstown State has had 14 allconference selections. In addition to those mentioned, R.J. Pepino as a first-team pick in the Horizon League in 2004. In 2002, freshman Seth Banks was named the Horizon League’s Newcomer of the Year.
