YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: When are we going to make a FG?
« on: Today at 08:20:01 AM »
obviously it becomes a mental thing and when a kicker is in a slump it is hard to break out of it
no doubt it's mental.  Almost everything is mental.  There are a thousand guys can hit the ball as far as Justin Thomas or Bryson DeChambeau, but the name of the game is getting the ball in the hole when you need to.  (or between the posts)

This is college football not HS football.  How many chances do you get to make them when they count?
Funny, but I'm reading this after watching the NFL Browns game!

YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: Season is over

First do I want the season to be over.  Absolutely not.  But I am a realist.  When I looked at the roster for this year there was a lot of question marks.  We have a good player gear and there and if you look from the middle that is where you build the team.  The DL is vastly lacks talent and depth the offensive line still is a question mark, I feel the love affair for a certain lb on this staff is like the situation we had with a certain corner safety on the previous staff.  Heart and smarts is all good but if you donít pass the eye test physically in D1 ball itís not a recipe for success.  Then we still dont have the man at QB.  For whatever reason since Pelini been hear we canít figure it out.  Then we lost both top assistants.  Instead of  getting quality hires we stayed in house.  So when you stir it up I see a team that has no chance to make the playoffs. This is a 4 or 5 win team maybe 6 if lucky. Since the catch at Eastern Washington we have had no luck.  The recipe for the Butler defeat was their and it happened. Letís hope we have learned and find a way to be successful again.

Nice post. Very accurate.
Ditto to 1AA's comment.  hard to argue with any of YSUGO's post.

Nothing can erase the stain on the reputation of YSU football that the loss to Butler has made.  That much is true.
But that does NOT mean the "season is over".  I watch MLB quite often and really enjoy the Tribe games, but even the best baseball teams lose 50-60 games a season.  You don't have to go 12-0 to enjoy the games.  We have many good young kids that will develop during the season.  Some will become good football players, most will become good teachers, engineers, etc. This is just a game. For me, it is the camaraderie of the tailgate parties, the great Youngstown weather (mostly true) and just the fun and excitement of the game.  Sure it's more fun to win, but it isn't the only thing.

I am not saying that VG is not a better choice, I am saying that I do not know. The difference is slight and the future is graduation. I also agree that we should start a young guy ... not sure it is Craycraft ...he has just been ordained in the past month. I think Mays passing inside is better. There is just no way for me to say that VG is hands-down better than Mays. However, I would agree that we have an offense better suited to his skills, so it is probably best. Let's just wait and see I guess. If we go beyond 4-losses I better see one of the young guys use all 4 of his allowed games.
Frankly, almost all teams "get" to give the younger guys some experience due to injuries.  I hope that isn't the case for YSU and VG, but odds are...........
easy enough for us to agree to disagree on Mays.  he's been starting games for 2 seasons with little success, and I'm with the coaching staff: time to move on.  I'm also not sure it's Craycraft.  I have loved the athletic ability Cunningham brings to the table from day 1 of his signing.  We'll see going forward. I assume a lot will come down to the style of the new HC.  Joe maybe a better thrower, Jadyen a better runner.
One thing for sure, if we don't figure a way to get to pressure on the QB, all the naysayers are going to be right about the season being "over".

How can you even conceivably say that you have no interest in Valpo, against a team that lost to Butler? If you are looking for a competitive game, this seems to be it. Furthermore, if things do not improve, this will the the only game we can win this season and that is far from certain. From a location perspective; do you have any more interest in a team from the Dakota's? I certainly do not.
Boy, we go from 6 to 8 wins and in the last 7 minutes of the Butler game we go to "maybe 1 win".
A lot of black and white in a world that is actually pretty gray!
Number 5 Michigan lost to App. State which was the college "upset of the century" and they still one 8 regular season games and beat Florida in a bowl game.
I have no interest in Valpo because I don't know them at all and don't care to learn and we are going to spank them soundly.  I'd rather play Slippery Rock. I know where they are at least.

1AA sometime we should get together and watch the same team!
Mays has had a couple years starting and VanGoder 2 starts, yet you give a pass to Mays on falling apart due to experience?
Mays is a far inferior passer. Doesn't have touch, doesn't have accuracy, can't spot secondary receivers, looks to run after a second (literally 1 second) in the pocket, and consistantly gets hurt when he does.
We don't know what we have in Montgomery, but he scored 17 in WVU and that keeps his starting job in my book.
I don't see what you see in Mays, and never did.  If VanGorder goes down, my bet in on Joe Craycraft stepping in, not Mays.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Browns work out Kevin Rader
« on: September 12, 2018, 02:30:24 PM »
It doesn't pay to drop a bunch of balls in the NFL.  Browns on search for TE.

General Manager John Dorsey is still perusing the unemployment line in hopes of finding a player that can help the Cleveland Browns this season.

The team tried out tight end Vince Mayle, linebacker Darnell Sankey, tight end Nick Keizer, tight end Kevin Rader.

Rader is an undrafted free agent out of Youngstown State. The Pennsylvania native spent some time with the Green Bay Packers but he has not appeared in a regular season game.

After losing to Butler I have lost all enthusiasm.  Went to the WVU game last week, stayed the night and had a great time.  But I have no interest in Valpo and will not go to the game.
In all honesty, I have no interest in Valpo but am going to support the program and the kids.  That Butler fiasco really disappointed me, but would have been much worse for the players.  I've supported some bad teams over the years, this one has had a huge disappointing loss, no doubt, but WVU has a very good team and that loss concerns me much less.  Farrar and VanGoder along with McCaster and Turner give me reason to be optimistic on the offensive side.  Still need a pass rush on the D side.  Me? I'm moving somebody like Richmond to LB and blitz coming off the bus.  WVU receivers are NFL good, but our DB's can't hold up if no pressure.  Whatever it takes to get pressure on the QB.

While it doesn't look good, it also isn't hopeless and the season is over when the whistle blows in the last game.  If we don't want are kids to grow up losers, and our team and university to be losers, then we shouldn't teach them to be losers.  Let's support the Quins against Valpo and get ready for the league.  As to playing young QB's, that is a delicate thing, as you can destroy a young QB's confidence when you are just trying to give him experience.  We'have all seen than happen, so mop up etc. is fine, but benching Monty for Craycraft in preparation for next year is, IMO, not a good idea.  The issue has been pass rush and coverage, not QB play anyway.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: Saturday
« on: September 12, 2018, 08:33:28 AM »
Too bad there isn't a game on Saturday.  The team really needs to establish something of an identity going into the MVFC season and the best place to do that is on the field.  Oh well, I guess we'll try to "coach them up" during this bye week and get ready for Western Il.  After-all, that strategy worked really well against Butler.
We are playing Valpo this Saturday and we have the bye week the following Saturday.
Am I missing something here?
My point is "you couldn't tell we had a game from a blog of ardent football program supporters"  That's just the way it was for the Butler game week and apparently the players joined us in are apathy.  Let's hope the players and coaches are playing at least some attention to Saturday, because we damn sure aren't!

I have been attending YSU (YU) football games since my Freshman year in 1966. Losing to Butler was the worse defeat I have never experienced. It was a total team effort (or lack off) for this perfect storm to happen.

The coaches will have to explain to me why our DB ot LB continued to play behind the receivers to give up those 6-10 yard completions when all they needed was a field goal.  They played as if we were trying to protect against a touchdown.

Agreed, worst ever!
It wasn't just the last drive, it was every damn snap the entire game!  Worst coaching job I've ever witnessed.  My grandson's under 125# team would make better adjustments at the half!

How sad is it when the week football season opens, we have a "feature article" on bowling.  I don't mean to disparage the bowling program and the great kids and coaches involved, but this is FOOTBALL season!  WTF signed to play Butler?
