YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: SIU Week
« on: October 10, 2023, 01:01:23 PM »
IAA, I am thinking YSU gets another signature win this week against SD, even if it is ugly because we do poorly in domes (hope I'm wrong and it is a clear victory but we will see). If we win out then lose to SDSU, I think we make playoffs at 8-3 and do some damage.

I still like our odds against SDSU if only because this team is hungry, and SDSU is playing us the week after the Dakota Marker game.

Could not agree more. 8-3 YSU (with the right wins) should still be a "lock" for the play-off.  My fear is the SIU coaches "lack of fear" for YSU & what that shows other teams. I mean, we were not able to do anything for much of Q2 and all of Q3 against the Saluki D. Not once, but twice, the SIU coach (still with 2 TDs of a win went for it on 4th and long ...deep in their own territory. He was looking to shake the game loose and saw that we could do nothing. He was absolutely right. We had a missed FG and a made FG. This FG was after we had a great INT and returned it to the 1.5 yard-line. What did we do with it? We kicked a FG from the 4.5 yard-line after being pushed back 3-yards on 3 plays. No fumbles, no penalties... we were just driven back by the obviously stronger Saluki D-line.
Not sure what you mean with (with the right wins)  We have 2 now, so assuming we go down to SDSU that requires 5-0 in the balance of the season. Frankly that's pretty optimistic.  I agree with you often but not always. Never further apart than (the obviously stronger saluki d-line)  I couldn't disagree more. First three drives obviously established ysu as superior inside on both sides of the ball.

So if we go and have a losing record this year I believe Phillips will be or should be let go.  There are plenty of hungry coaches out there that are looking for a good job.
Plenty of coaches.
Your statement might have made some sense maybe 30 years ago but you don't have a good job to offer. Some college Coordinator jobs are over a million you offer marginal recent history and a couple hundred thousand in a crap town to bring a family.   We're lucky to get a class guy like coach Phlipps.

SIU=L
South Dakota=L
SDSU=L
MSU=?
INS=W
ILS=W
Murray=W

I actually think we will win this weekend. Still holding out hope we have some sort of a team here. The portal has really helped USD and UND compete with the xDSU's.
Portal helping us too. King Oliver and others a portal hole fillers. King may not be a McMlguan (who scored again today) but is darn good.

Nothing is coming out of his press conferences. This week's is almost a joke. We should have done a serious number on UNI. Instead he tells us that not only was our run coverage terrible, so was our pass coverage. As if w needed to be told. We should be a much better team than Weber State. Weber may make the post season, but it is long-shot. This opportunity to win (and win big) against UNI will not present itself again until Farley retires.. We have 3 more losses on our schedule, even if we do show up and play. Hint, this Saturday is not one of them. That is one loss too many for any kind of post-season. UNI will not make the post-season either. I really am asking for Phillips to "turn in his badge". With the portal there is no hope for this team. I know it sounds drastic, but we have no choice.

I couldn't disagree more.
Penguinepower. I agree with you 100%   Weplay3d a bunch of man on man last night with great success. BLITZ AND GO MAN way to play

Yo, I admire your enthusiasm and your optimism. But our pass defense is garbage, worse even than last season. We can't compete with any quality team in the MVFC
Want any of this post retracted?

Brungard did a nice job in mop up duty.  Ran well and hit his passes.   Not sure why the no-confident from the board.   Won't argue but time will tell.

Unlike Crenshaw, Brungard has all the tools to be an effective dual threat quarterback on the FCS level. I'm really glad that we have him. His only weakness is his height. So logically, should he earn the starting job next season, structure the offense so he does not often have to throw out of a pocket.
Agreed Beau looked good against osu too. Yes int but overall showed reasonable ability.

The last 2 weeks help define a culture and are steps in the right direction.  Us older fans were spoiled during the Tressel era and then we fell back to mediocrity the past 22 years other than the 2 playoff seasons.  Do I expect another Tressel era?  Nope.  But all I ask is we are competitive and have a chance to make the playoffs more than twice in 22 years.  Winning is contagious they say.  But crap so is losing in my book.  These next few weeks will define what we are.  November was always the Tressel eras best month.  If we win out would be an amazing thing for the program the fans and breathe some new life into  football program and spark some interest
Amen to that!

Long way from a great team but FAR better than the last couple seasons!
We did nothing the whole second half until inside 2 min. Unbelievable. Building culture. Something Bo never did. Class coach VS no class. Makes a difference.

Thanks for the update.  I'm going to be curious all year to see how these two do.  YSU will miss them terribly.
"miss them terribly"  Boy is that an understatement!  We'd be hands down favorites in the Horizon for our first every NCAA birth!  That being said, nobody did anything wrong here, just the function of the new transfer rules is all.  We'll loos some we really didn't want to lose, but we'll get some we really appreciate as well.  Proof? At least one MVFC school can spot a mis-hire when they make one!

There was a game, I believe in the early 1980s, later 19070s, at I believe Western MI, that I was listening to on the radio as a kid. We were getting beat badly in the first half, and then there was a huge rally to win. To this day is the most exciting game I’ve ever listened to.

Trivia question: Which current MVFC program is the only one not to have their State’s name included in their University’s name?
Dah NDSU  SDSU ND NIU WIU SIU SD  I don't know, I give up!

We need to play better defense.  Our defense was good in the spring but this fall its seems to have taken a step back.  We can't stop the run or the pa$$.  We have talent on defense but I think the coaching is the problem.    3 man fronts puts no pressure on opposing QBs and allows the running backs to get into the second level.  Also covering receivers with LBs is not working.  Especially against UIW that had fast talented receivers.

Also we need to open up the offense.  Our QB seems capable so give him a game plan that uses his talent.  #8 is talented but will not last long running the ball 25-30 times a game.
Your assessment of needing improved D is right, but Cameron Ward is best I've seen in years, and Big10 just has more talent, so I'm not convinced we are that much worse.  Saturday night will tell.

This will be a tough game.
From here on, they will ALL be tough!  Our only "easy" game was a incredible comeback, 3 point overtime win!

At our level loyalty is all you get. Do you think any team, even a Montana, JMU or an NDSU get attendance due to the ability to see big time college football?  They are the only game. Heck, NDSU is one of only 2 teams in the entire state. Youngstown has 4 power-conference teams within just a few hours ride. OSU sells out because they see it on national TV each week and talk on the news every single day 365. There are 10 times more people that want to see a Buckeyes game than can buy tickets. Now if you can figure out how to do this in Youngstown, we are set. In the mean time, you push Penguin club & organizations that promote group ticket sales. You promote tailgating & pay your campus police.
That may have been true, but I'm seeing reports of unsold OSU tickets.
10,000 TICKETS LEFT TO BE SOLD FOR OSU V. OREGON GAME
With five days to go before the Ohio State football home opener against Oregon at Ohio Stadium, the university still has roughly 10,000 tickets available.

Obviously some of this is covid-related, but still, the home opener vs. a credible P5 team.   How much of this is temporary and how much is caused by the overall fans' change in dynamics about attendance, things like cost, time, length of game/amount of commercials, etc.

I also dispute the claim they sell out because they are discussed on TV and radio daily.  I would argue they are discussed on TV and radio daily BECAUSE they sell out.  I believe you have the cart before the horse.
