YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: WBB

UIC was a top 60-65 RPI team, at least that's what I saw on Twitter, entering this week. To open up with 2 road wins is impressive. Keep the faith ladies! You CAN win this conference this year.

The RPI release on NCAA.com from earlier in the week showed UIC at 67, down from 64.  Really nice win.

YSU was 271 up from 288.  Should see a nice jump this week.

Scalzo with a couple of Tweets indicating Strollo has said Wolford will get a contract extension:

Joe Scalzo ‏@JoeScalzo1
YSU athletic director Ron Strollo said Eric Wolford will get an extension. Wolford is entering last year of original contract.

Strollo believes program is headed in the right direction. Said playoffs are still the standard. More in Saturday's paper.

Hopefully the article will be on-line.

Two points (that I've probably made before)

1.  An extension is imperative for recruiting as we head in to the last month.  If Wolford doesn't get an extension, it will be used against YSU by other coaches.  Doing nothing was not an option IMO.  Strollo either has to let Wolford go (and would have had to it as season ended) or extend him.

2.  The real key to an extension (which I would think has to be at least two years and most likely three) is what are the buyout terms.  If we are sitting here in two years and YSU still hasn't made the playoffs, Strollo needs a way out of the contract - with a buyout cost that YSU can afford.

As Indy noted several days ago, this early in the season you should look more closely at road wins/home losses than at the overall standings.  Right at this moment (I think) that would look like this:

+1 advantage: Cleveland State and Youngstown State

-1 disadvantage: Milwaukee and UIC

neutral: everybody else

Correct. Home teams were 7-1 before tonight and this was the only league game tonight.

I wonder if more changes will be afoot simply from the lack of action on a contract extension.  I think assistants will be more likely to jump for a similar offer if Wolford doesn't have an extension.  Don't want the debate over whether he should, simply making a statement that the lack of one could impact staff - in terms of guys leaving and who would want to come here on what could be a one year gig.

Not exactly the site I go to for sports analysis.  And lets face it, KP (and YSU) had some pretty good games early - which is what this "analysis" is based on.

All four home teams won last night.  Everyone held serve.  Agree that getting a road win at UIC is imperative on this trip.

Where' s JJ at now? Is he so depressed ysu lost that he jumped in the mahoning river?
Oh wait, he' s in slocums hotel room. So that's what those  checks he cuts to the athletic department pays for.

SMH to this post! It leaves me little hope for humanity and makes me question if all the positive things I'm trying to do for the Valley/YSU are all for not because of people like this.

I-AA Fan - is there a block feature on this site? Or do I just have to ignore everything Ray says?

It's one thing to disagree with someone, but it's another thing to say people are going into the coaches hotel room after what happened at Penn State and Syracuse. It's disgusting and disturbing.

Wow - talk about the pot calling the kettle black.

Aren't you the guy calling other posters vulgar, derogatory names because you disagree with them?  Now its not good because someone said something vulgar about you?

You say you are trying to take a positive spin here, yet you call those who disagree with you idiots and turn their user names in to vulgar names?  Doing so undermines all the "positive" you claim to want to accomplish.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: Horizon League Opener Thursday at UWM

Wright State is at the top of my list, but UWM is not far behind.

I agree on Amiker.  Guins need a few guys to step up on a consistent basis.  Amiker certainly has the tools to do it.

The various computer models all have UWM as the favorite in the 3 1/2 - 5 point range.

Pomeroy projects 80-76 with YSU having a 35% chance to win.

Massey projects 78-73 with YSU at 31%.

Sagarin has the teams ranked 146 (UWM) and 147 (YSU) which makes the 3.67 point home court advantage as the margin.

Dunkel has UWM ranked about 3 1/4 points higher than YSU - can't figure out his home court advantage.

UWM has two wins over Pomeroy top 200 schools.  Best win is over top 100 UNI.  Also have a win over top 200 Davidson.  For comparison YSU has wins over top 200 Eastern Kentucky and Robert Morris.

UWM has a bad loss to Loyola in the season opener.  Other losses were to DePaul, Wisconsin and Northeastern.  YSU has the bad losses to UMKC and Austin Peay.

Pomeroy has YSU one of six league teams projected at 8-8.  Only UWGB (11-5), Cleveland State (10-6) and UIC (4-12) are projected at other than 8-8.  While the numbers don't quite add up due to rounding, the point is the league may have more parity than it has had.  Take care of business at home and win a few on the road is the key to success.  This would be a great place for YSU to get one of those road wins.

OK JJ, you wanted my response so here it is.  I find it amusing that a 34 year old fan could question my loyalty to the university.  I just completed 40 years of perfect attendance at home football games.  My streak at basketball would have extended back into the 1960s if adult responsibilities had not interfered on several occasions.  Furthermore, I attend our Olympic sports regularly, even those sports that I don't like very much.  Counting those Olympic sports, there is nobody that attends more YSU athletic events in a year than I do.  Nobody.

Your problem is that you have a warped definition of loyalty.  You equate it with being a cheerleader, supporting any policy from the leadership without question.  There is a label for that in American sports; it is called being a Cub fan.  You have evaded the central thesis of my original post: that YSU sports has become irrelevant in the community.  True, loyal YSU fans are aware of this unwelcome condition.  They have offered their remedies.  Mine is the replacement of the entire management team.  If you have a better idea, let's hear it.  But denying that the crisis exists contributes nothing.  The empty seats in the gym and in the stadium call for more than cheerleading.

What business experience do you have Wick? Because your theory of firing every decision makes, is widely agreed upon to be the dumbest business decision a person or organization could possibly make. It's literally one of the first lessons we learned in my M.B.A. program. So when you say things like this, it just makes you sound so stupid.

This notion that you keep saying that YSU sports is irrelevant is ridiculous as well. I have no idea what your status is, but judging by your comments on this board, (hopefully) you're not in decision making role with a large business. Now I am. I travel all throughout the United States for work, and do a good bit of business in the area. When I'm traveling, I get stopped by people all the times asking me about my YSU shirt I'm wearing at the airport etc. I can't tell you how many times people with no interest in YSU has asked about Kendrick Perry and if he's the "real deal".

The notion that no body cares in Youngstown is as ridiculous as the comment you made about overhauling everyone in management. I buy a lot of season tickets for basketball and own a suite for football. I get multiple requests weekly for football and basketball tickets.

Your problem is you sit on an island in Youngstown (or other community in the Valley) and never venture out. You think if you post 1,200 times on a message board and a person more delusional than you agrees with it, it's the gospel.

Now have fun at the YSU game tomorrow. I'm going to be in a suite at the Browns / Steelers game. :)

On TV, financially successful people are generally stereotyped as d-bags.  IRL, in my experience, they are the kindest and most humble people I have ever met.  I'm referring to people who are rich by rich people's standards.

When I see boastfulness and arrogance, I see ignorance and insecurity 100% of the time.

Becoming spiteful about about a differing opinion (especially regarding college sports) reveals immaturity.

We're almost a full 24 hours from the game and Dick250 is nowhere to be found

Proving Penguin Nation's point.

I do not recall any prior high school recruit graduating early and enrolling at YSU in January.

14' York High RB Ryan Moore will sign today with Youngstown State and will enroll in January.  Congrats! @ATH_Moore21

I find it very funny how people say Heacock was not a good head coach. Imagine if he were coach under a 24  team playoff system? Woulda made the playoffs in 01 (8-3) 02 (7-4) 05 (8-3) 07 (7-4)

Perhaps - of course a lot more automatic bids now and more conferences involved for at-large bids.  Not a slam dunk in all of those years.  I don't recall enough about all the other contenders for the bids in those years.

Indy, all your points are true, but the same was said to justify the extension to Heacock.  When do you just have to bite the bullet, admit Wolford was a big mistake, and move on?  I don't know.  I do know that interest in the program is now actually below the level it reached when Heacock was shown the door.

Wick - I don't disagree - simply pointing out that by not already making a decision to move on from Wolford, that is where we are.

In other news:
@DanaBalash21: @21WFMJSports  YSU Athletic Director Ron Strollo tells me expects Eric Wolford to be the head football coach for a "very long time."

If true, I take this to mean that reaching the playoffs is not as big a priority as we have been told. Many expenditures hard to justify if this is the case.

I wouldn't expect Strollo to say anything else with less than two months until signing day.

The real proof will be in the contract extension - how long and most importantly what are the buyout terms (which we probably will not know unless the media requests a copy).

If there is no contract extension, recruiting will likely be a disaster and there could be coaching defections as guys look for more stable spots.  And good luck attracting capable replacements if a coach is in the last year of his contract.
