YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: Basketball Tournaments
« on: March 14, 2011, 10:22:46 AM »
Brings back memories of our YSU team almost winning the OVC championship game at Middle Tenn. We would have played North Carolina at Notre Dame in a first round game.  Almost got there didn't we?

I often feel like the Charlie Brown / Linus cartoon about Willie McCovey not hitting the ball higher on the line drive that ended the World Series:  "WHY DID VAUGHN LUTON HAVE TO CALL TIMEOUT"

 ;D ;D

Little did we know how hard it would be to get that close again.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: Tressel gone?

The Colonel is getting his second 15 minutes of fame as a result of this.  Ray Isaac mentioned by name in the AP story by Rusty Miller and in the PD this morning by Bill Livingston.  And Sports Illustrated referenced the problems with Tressel's quarterback at YSU.  Wonder how much more will come?

Yahoo Sports guys showing up in a college town is bad news - just like Jim Cantore showing up when bad weather is forecast.

His choice or EW's choice?

"mutual" from what I have been told

I believe WFMJ reported yesterday that Phil Longo (recruiting coordinator and wide receiver coach) is no longer on staff.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: YSU 62 Butler 60
« on: February 03, 2011, 09:14:20 PM »
YSU led 25-22 at halftime despite being outrebounded 26-13.  Butler had 11 offensive rebounds in the first half.  First half key - Butler 1 for 9 shooting 3 pointers and 10 Butler turnovers to only 1 for YSU.

Outrebounded 40-30 for the game and shoot 3 for 9 at the line and win the game.

Nice to see the team get a win.

Kendrick Perry with the game winning 3 and 14 points.  Eargle (16 points and 9 boards) outplayed Matt Howard (12 and 4).  Blake Allen 11 big points.  Vytas in foul trouble all night.

Big big win.

Time to take my YSU flag to work tomorrow - bout time.

Penguins hold Butler scoreless for last 3:51 and score last 10 points of game to win 62-60.  Kendrick Perry with a three to win the game as YSU survives the last 20 seconds.

Wow. wow wow

Pita - I got the same old links to come up from when he was at Pitt.  Sometimes hard to tell what is current or not.

I am not even going to get in to the what is the problem or what should be done.  I know nothing but its gotten to the stage where I am just tired of it.

I started my comments in response to the poll.  If there is a change, I don't know that I would be comfortable with either of the options and I am just trying to understand whether there are any other former players I don't know about who would be qualified.

Back to going outside and chipping away at the skating rink on my driveway.  How long until Spring?

Pita - Joe Lombardi is head coach at IUP (Indiana University Pennsylvania)

not sure what his salary is, but I recall the last time we looked at PSAC salaries vs YSU salary, there was not a large difference.

Interesting poll question - not sure either is the right approach.  About the only former player I can think of that might even be remotely qualified is Joe Lombardi.

And do we want another coach from IUP (Cindy Martin) or a Division II school in Pennsylvania?  I think it would be a hard sell.

Is there another former player I am not thinking of?

It appears that the 30 new signees in the Fall is the maximum number a FCS school can have in one year, the "initial counters."  The 5 who enrolled in January count against the 2010 number.

This leads to a couple of questions:

FCS schools can have a max of 85 players on scholarship.  35 new players would seem to indicate only 50 scholarship players can return.  How many non-seniors were on last year's roster?  Does this mean that some players will leave the program?  How many?  I am not familar enough with the roster to know who is scholarship and who is not.

Does the fact that 30 were signed which is the max "initial counters" for FCS preclude YSU from taking any FBS transfers for next season?  I have done minimal web research and really haven't found a clear, consice answer.

I would think Wolf would not have recruited to where YSU could not take any FBS transfers - but the rules can be complex.  The offset to that is that if any of the new recruits do not qualify academically, YSU would not be at the 30 max.  Nothing counts against the max limits until they enroll.
