YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: 2014 Football Recruiting Master List

I have no idea how many scholarships YSU has to give.  Hard to say with the ability to split scholarships.

Isn't it 63 full scholarship equivalents spread over 85 players?

Check out the link for a picture

Kathleen 2014 DB/QB Kevin Wilson took an official visit to Youngstown State on January 17. Here is what he had to say about his visit.

PCFB: Wilson, you narrowed down your choices of schools to Youngstown State. After you took your official visit did it reassure you that YSU is the place for you to continue your football career?

Kevin Wilson: “Yes.”

PCFB: How much did you know about the program and the city before you got there?

Kevin Wilson: “I really didn’t know that much. I just knew that it was a big football city.”

PCFB: How much did you learn about the program once you left?

Kevin Wilson: “I learned that they have a good business program and the coaches and professors really care about you.”

PCFB: Who was your guide during your visit?

Kevin Wilson: “A corner named Julius.”

PCFB: Tell us about some of the sites that you were able to see while on your visit?

Kevin Wilson: “The inside field, the new courtyard where some of the upperclassmen stay, and downtown was pretty nice.”

PCFB: Ohio can get pretty cold compared to the weather down in Florida. How was the weather during your visit and how will you get adjusted to it once you move there?

Kevin Wilson: “During my visit it was pretty cold and it was snowing which was my first time seeing snow which was real exciting, but I think I will be able to adjust.”

PCFB: What were some of the things that impressed you about the school?

Kevin Wilson: “What impressed me was how much the coaches and professors care about you.”

PCFB: How much of the coaching staff did you meet and what were your impressions of them?

Kevin Wilson: “I met the whole coaching staff and my impression was they really care about me inside and outside of football.”

PCFB: How did they say they plan to use you in their system once you get there?

Kevin Wilson: “They plan on using me at free safety and they are looking to play me right away.”

PCFB: Will you be taking anymore official visits or have you shut down your college recruitment process?

Kevin Wilson: “No more visits. I’m pretty solid to them.”

PCFB: What should the fans of YSU expect to see out of Kevin Wilson?

Kevin Wilson: “The fans should expect to see leadership, hardwork, and doing whatever to help the team win and get another championship back to YSU.”

0505 has been doing a great job of digging out the verbals.  Updated again tonight.

I know I don't always look up there for updates - just a friendly reminder in case you have not been checking.

Jeff Rotheram, a 6-7 300 pound OT from North Olmstead has committed to YSU... Seems to have good bloodlines as his brother Matt is the starting RT at the University of Pittsburgh.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: Coaches for Cancer NEOhio tip-off next year?

Coach Slocum also indicated that he better stop talking about it and he had probably said too much.

Right after that the Horizon League feed of the presser went dark.  From reading the paper, I know some players followed Coach at the presser.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Upgraded basketball facilities
« on: January 26, 2014, 04:47:44 PM »
Joe Scalzo with a story in today's Vindicator about the new basketball weight room and video room, among other facility improvements.

Some interesting discussion from Strollo about how the perception of Youngstown as an unsafe city hampered not only recruiting efforts, but the women's hoops coaching search.

Also some discussion from Slocum about how financial needs impact the schedule, both home and away - need to make $80k or $90k on the road, need people to come here on the cheap.

I have no doubt the facility upgrades will help recruiting.  These kind of things matter to kids, even more than the gameday arena itself.

Kudos to those who stepped up financially to make this come through.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Coaches for Cancer NEOhio tip-off next year?
« on: January 25, 2014, 09:30:42 PM »
Listening to Coach Slocum's post game press conference.  Talked about wearing purple to support Dan Peters.

He mentioned that instead of doing a Coaches vs Cancer banquet next year, talk of a tip off tournament with the four NEO schools.  Said Cleveland State is the hold up right now.

I think that would be a great idea and should happen every year with the schools alternating against teams from the other league.  It would be great to do it at the Q, but even if it happens at Kent or Akron (centrally located) that would be fine.  Similar to the Crossroads Classic in Indy each year where Butler and Notre Dame play Purdue and Indiana each year.

sometimes it is better to be lucky than good.

Junior Melinda Trimmer from West Branch also committed to YSU earlier this year.

Yahoo's Pat Forde (imo the best college sports writer around) penned an excellent story on Coach Peters.  worth your read

YSU Penguin Athletics / Preview: Men's basketball vs Valparaiso
« on: January 23, 2014, 12:09:24 PM »
YSU hosts Valpo tonight.  The Crusaders are 11-9, 3-2 in the Horizon League

Valpo has home wins over UIC and UWM and a road win at Detroit.  League losses are at Oakland and home to Wright State.

Non-conference includes 3 non-Division I wins and no wins against Pomeroy top 150 teams. Bad losses (Pomeroy 200 or higher) were to 227 Evansville and 270 Eastern Tennessee.

Pomeroy  gives YSU a 73% chance of winning and projects a 81-74 final.

Massey gives YSU a 66% chance of winning and project 80-75.

Sagarin's ratings make YSU a 4 1/2 point favorite

Dunkel indicates the Vegas line is YSU by 4 and recommends taking Valpo plus the points.

My morning paper has YSU a 2 1/2 point favorite.

This is the weakest Valpo team in a few years. YSU has won the last two at Beeghley against them.  This is a game that YSU needs to win if they hope to contend for a double bye in the conference tournament.

I will be away from the computer for most of the night - hoping to come back to a good result.

I updated the original thread to add those mentioned below - Stephens, L Washington, Sandidge and Pittman.  Still can't pin down the name of the Jireh Prep player - have an idea, but no way to confirm.

No one added at this time that hasn't been discussed before on this thread.
