YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: Ysu vs IUPUI

I saw an article that some wanted the game moved to Friday night.  But Frisco said no to that because of the economic impact of having it on a Sunday.

Also the the network ABC said they were happy with the 1million estimated who watched in that time slot last year.  Which by the way was 500,000 less that watched us play in 2017.

So NCAA relented that’s why 2 pm on a Sunday vs the NFL

Sadly the FCS championship will have to compete with NFL tomorrow at 2:00. I can’t imagine what that game’s audience will be.

Very, very small. They should move it to the middle of bowl season. If you’re not an FCS fan or a fan of the 2 teams no one cares at this point.

It also looks like South Dakota St will return 18 Seniors and the Bison have a lot returning as well.  So if you all think we are moving up in the food chain not happening.

In my opinion, 2024 is going to be a rebuilding year. Too many question marks on defense with the influx of transfers out. Quarterback is another issue. Hopefully we get a late transfer with some experience.  What’s on the depth chart now is very weak.  Offensive line will be steady.  Wide receivers OK.  Tight end and running back our average.   Defensive line we are starting over linebacker as well, and honestly even DB.  Phillips Phillips touted when he was higher, he would build depth. Will be tested in 2024.  Again I’m firing off a warning shot. The state of the NIL in and portal.  Building any kind of.Depth and developing top talent will be suspect and tough and best.  The players are performing have realized at this level that they can move up. so don’t expect miracles and like I said we will continually be the third or fourth best team in this conference which will not bring the casual fan back.
And until we find revenue or someway to pay coaches more and increase the revenue for NIL for athletes, nothing will change.  I feel 2024 is pivotal for the program and for FCS football. we need to look to the future that keep going back to the past. Most of us are diehard and dinosaurs fans. College football has changed and we need to figure out what direction to go..  some of you keep waiting and predicting the MAC will drop with the re-organization of college football. I don’t see that the NCAA might change its tier but they’re not going to force schools to drop.  FCS means nothing to the NCAA. so Strollo, or whoever needs to see where we need to be in the next 10 years.  You don’t wanna hear this, but being in the SEC of FCS means.Nothing to most recruits fans or media. anyways, getting off track and talking to dead horse on here. The dinosaurs still believe we can compete and win a championship in this league not happening ever as long as Dakotas are in the league We are just a spot on the schedule and they could care less if we left.

With the transfer portal and NIL expect mass defections from our program and all of FCS,  Coaches will let us develop, cherry-pick and offer more NIL to our top performers.  Unless it’s fixed soon FCS will be a mess and the talent will be used to build depth and help programs that hire new coaches a way to win faster.  Maybe what needs to change is if a BCS school poaches a player then they need to pay a bounty to thst school for developing and then losing them.  I expect our left tackle will be gone after next season for sure.

So if Phillips thinks he can develop kids to stay not happening anymore.

Basketball is a contact sport period.  YSU if they can get to the dance and win a game will do more for athletics in terms of exposure than an FCS championship.

Why would be an embarrassment to join or start another league.  WHATS EMBARRASSING is being in a league with no natural rivalry and we made what 3 playoff appearances in 23 years and declining attendance and interest.

I don’t think there will be 3 different D1’s.  With NIL and TV contracts it’s going to hurt FCS even more.  We are in a bad spot with that.  I think if anything with declining enrollment and let’s not forget most of our athletic budget is paid by the students.  We are no better than the MAC .  Just a smaller budget we can barely afford

MAC gets

The MAC-ESPN contract runs through at least 2026, and pays each of the 12 MAC football schools at least $1 million a year, significant cash for mid-major schools always feeling the budget crunch. ESPN also provides exposure during a time, midweek, when it has the football fans' focus to itself.

The crowd at the Montana NDSU game is fantasic, kudos to the Griz fans!

26,544 fans at the game and they have 19,000 season ticket holders. That's a lot of extra cash to pay for coaches.

Yes the Grizz atmosphere was good.  All this game showed me was Montana wasn’t overrated.  Plus we would lose to both teams.

I just looked up the Albany-Villanova game. Villanova had five turnovers; Albany had none.

As others have noted, Villanova is the only CAA team that has the size and strength up front to compete in the MVFC. With James Madison and Delaware now gone, the CAA has become Villanova and the (fill-in the blank) dwarfs.

The CAA joins the Southern Conference, once the home of multiple championship teams Georgia Southern, Marshall, and Appalachian State, as a second rate FCS conference.

As we remain an irrelevant program in the irrelevant FCS.

Could’nt agree more I never understood the fascination of being in the fourth fifth or or six best team in a conference that we don’t fit in with no natural rivalries and very hard to travel. If we were in the CAA, we would be with Villanova like Dakotas, and be a top team every year and make the playoffs a lot easier and with that would come a higher seed and more home games instead of being a middle of pack team as we are now. But Mike was said in his post the FCS will become more irrelevant.
I don’t see anything positive staying in the conference or wait. Maybe we should hang a banner Youngstown State plays in the toughest conference in FCS football and we made the playoffs three times in 20+ years ha ha ha ha we can put that next to the championship flags don’t get me wrong, I love Youngstown State but when you look at this from the big picture being in his Conference has been nothing but a failure look at this they brought in Murray state, not for football, but do the basketball program. Why aren’t we in? why aren’t we in this conference? I know the answer because we don’t have the money that the schools have for the most part that’s another story but again hey, we played a toughest conference and FCS and congratulations for that and let’s be honest we got a bottom feeder playoff team as a reward we would opened up on the road  against Villanova we have been one and done but again I’m still pro these guys and I understand we’re never gonna leave the conference as long as the AD supports it .  Another thing just because those teams suck. I got to the final four doesn’t matter. It just proves my point due to a conference got them to that point they didn’t have to beat their heads into the wall like we have done year after year hoping praying that we get in.  Go penguins.

Dude, the 93 and 94 teams were littered with legit D1 players that either stayed home or transferred back. Tressel worked that like a master. There probably aren’t more than a small handful of kids on the current roster that could have played for those teams. FCS 2023 is D2 when compared to 1AA in the 90s

Nova is correct back when Trestle was here specially, with the early 90s teams we had many D1 players. Another advantage he had even though he said he recruited a state of Youngstown. He recruited the city series schools very well plus the local area had more talent which has been reduced Due to population shrinking and the loss of manufacturing jobs and people moving away especially from Packard and GM. Another reason back then too one AA was only about 80 teams now I think it’s over 100+ I didn’t check but I know it’s more division one has increased as well , so Phillips does have a harder job and recruiting elite players. So going back to what power was saying that we could probably just have a game manager for a QB that’s true but it always hurts us now when we play the better teams Davidson was system quarterback, and he did  Have an elite running back for one year and he had a elite receiver for two years, but he was limited and it showed at times.
Football is about the QB at all levels now QB has to be accurate and make a decisions and be elusive. It seems that Youngstown state we get a QB but he’s missing one of the attributes and I need to be developed.
