I have heard that the players report August 2.

I do not think a D1 basketball school (men or women) can split scholarships, so I think he had a full scholarship.

Football at FCS and most if not all other sports can split scholarships to a certain degree.  I think in football the 63 scholarships can be split among 85 players to reach the FBS level.  In FBS I don't think they can split football scholarships, all are full scholarships.

Wrestling is fine for sure, but not nearly as popular locally as baseball.  I wish we could have all sports, but financially and Title 9, not possible.  I fear baseball could be dropped due it being a men's sport with 35 players. Much easier for YSU to field a men's soccer team with facilities right on campus etc. and cheaper to fund.  And with Cleveland State and Akron dropping baseball, it is easy to see it is vulnerable. Hope baseball can stay for me personally.

Since I was a student at YSU back in the day, I always wanted an on campus baseball facility.  In fact it was in a YSU master plan back in the 70's as I recall.  However not sure it is feasible today.  The new scoreboard and upgraded internet access at Eastwood this coming year will give YSU a really top notch facility we could never afford on campus. I don't like the distance to Eastwood for games, but with money tight, I can't see us building an on campus facility.  The new on campus facilities on entirely turf including batters box and base paths so one can play in the early spring.  Expensive I think.  And I don't think there would be much use of the facility other than YSU due to high rental costs. So as much as I like the idea, it is too costly to work.   Just like us getting in the MAC, just to expensive for YSU and Youngstown today.

I think 1AA has the facts incorrect.  Looked again at the box scores from the tournament this week and neither Floyd or Dunham pitched.  And as I recall they have not pitched for weeks.

As for the bats, they were scaled back a few years ago so that the current aluminum bats that are legal are near the performance of wooden bats.  A few years ago that was not the case, but a change was made.  Both the bats and ball have to meet a coefficient of restitution standard to be legal.  Coefficient of restitution is a measure of energy storage capability.  For example is you drop a golf ball from the height of your eyes, it will bounce back to a height of less than the drop height. If it came back to the same height it would have a coefficient of restitution of 1 and if it stuck to the floor it would be 0.  All the bats need to meet a standard of coefficient of restitution that is set by the NCAA.  Previous bats were getting so good that it was putting pitchers in danger hence the change.

I think you mean the looser of the game.

What happened to our two top pitchers from earlier in the season?  Colin Floyd and Greg Dunham.  They are none existent as of late.  No info in the newspapers as far as I see.  No release from Athletics.  Any idea? Are they hurt?

Is this construction of the press box to be done by mid August?

I agree.  We need 1-AA in all sports to give our athletes a competitive chance.  The Butler run a few years back and Loyola this year are very rare indeed.

I was mistaken, he did participate.  Not sure what happened in the 200, may have had a cramp or got a bad start.  We needed 3 points to tie and 4 to win.  But we are doing fine.  I just wish we could do well in MBB or Baseball.  Baseball has not improved from last year with many new faces on the team.  With Cleveland State and Akron out of baseball, I sure thought we could get more better players.  Not so yet.  Not much pitching beyond the top couple and the same with hitting.  Our offensive stats are at the bottom of the Horizon League by quit a bit.

I looked at the men's results from the Horizon League Outdoor Track and Field events and didn't see Chad Zallow's name.  Any idea what happened?

Not much on other YSU sports.  Been following the softball team and they are about 500 in the league.  They have had trouble with the star pitcher from last year, Maddi Lusk.  She is playing well in the field and still hitting well, but doesn't do so well pitching.  Not close to the program at all, but wondering if any of you have info on her, ie is she injured or what.

Watch Wright State and Tenn.  Wright State was overmatched badly in size, speed, and skill.  And they were rattled and missed some shots they would surely make against us. Maybe we can compete with a few extra pieces.

Cam had a great career for us.  Unfortunately the system and support players let him down for sure.  We need a stronger inside threat to take the heat off our outside players.  Hopefully some of the current inside types can develop over the summer, especially Akuchie who had a nice game against Cleveland State in limited time.  Must be doing something wrong because he gets limited playing time and scored well while in the game. Other question marks are Anibar, Robinson, and Jacob Brown.  Without that improvement we are doomed to less than 500 play.

On another note watched Cleveland State beat Northern Kentucky by 10 after trailing by 5 or so at the half.  They started the game about 10 down and it looked like disaster.  But they kept playing and by the end they had Northern Kentucky taking desperation 3's.

Hope some new players coming in can improve our team.  May be some departures from the current squad if they can't play at the level.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: YSU v IUPUI

Nice game for us.  The press sure affected IUPUI and for a change it got us more turnovers than easy baskets for them. We can play against teams that do not have strong capable bigs with our group which was the case with IUPUI.  We can do the press thing when we can go 8 or 9 deep which we did.  For the future we need some quality bigs to add to our strong group of freshman.  Of course all mid majors are searching for that person.  I saw a big at our game yesterday that I think was on the bench for the game.  I am not aware of any transfers etc that we have sitting out, so who that was is unknown to me.

I thought we would win this one being up 10 or so a few times and about 7 with under 5 minutes left in the game.  But our old problems came back to get us.  Lack of size inside gave Detroit many offensive rebounds where they crashed the boards on offense and it rarely led to use getting break away points due to their selling out on the offensive boards. Also seems like our guys  are not in good rebounding position and seem to always be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Also without an inside presence on offense our outside guys are guarded closely.  We settle for too many 3's and give up on penetrating and getting the ball inside. The turnovers in this game were unbelievable and many were not really forced and the foul shooting was poor. And the press led to many easy baskets by Detroit and I don't think we got enough steals to cover those easy baskets.  And we tired ourselves out with the press.  Not playing enough players to press that much.  I think the press is harder on us energy wise compared to the other team.

We are playing 2 freshman most of the time and they are growing so that is a plus.  Our basketball IQ is lacking for sure and we need more inside players who can play and are big enough to stand up to our opponent's bigs.
