YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: 1st 2013 Commitment
« on: November 09, 2012, 12:52:27 AM »
Justin Spencer, a 6-5 275 OT from Indiana Creek in PA has committed to us. Also played Center and DL in high school.

It's amazing how "high" these OT's play nowadays. Good luck to this young man. He made a good choice in picking YSU. But good Lord, sink your hips......!!!

Beating up bad defensive lineman at the PA small school level......means absolutely nothing.

1-AA's oftentimes, just recruit frames.....and not ability.

Since this has become a doom and gloom board I thought we could talk positive for a minute.

Pick a player from the "O" and "D" and give a short reason why he's your favorite player.

My "O" pick is #25  All I hear is how great he is in the class room/community and one of the best team mates a team can have.

My "D" pick is #52 Plays all out sadly one player can't be everywhere.

Hard to argue those two.

Ill take Cook, Hess, Sharbaugh, Sirl, Liste, Dom Rich, Main, Radoc, Delisio... too as great "character" guys you must have on your football team.

Heacock is a good man. His "D" is getting torched today though. Whats up with that? Bowden magic??

It may be academic, but would 7-4 get us in with 20 teams? Win over Pitt, 3 wins to end the season.
If we do go 7-4 we would definitely have a chance because 7 wins are a prerequisite for playoff consideration and wins over Pitt,Northern Iowa, and Indiana State would be considered major victories.Plus 3 wins in a row shows that team is back on track and playoff worthy.

I agree and hope for this outcome!! :) fb

Best teams in the NFL...San Fran...et al.....run pro downhill. In the NCAA, Alabama....run pro....down hill. HS teams Ignatius, Ursuline, Mooney (not this year).....use a fullback and run downhill. USC in the past, downhill with an occassional rollout, boot.

Big bodies beating people up, and "play action" pass of of that. Been "tried" and "true" for 60 years at every level.

Oregon and Coldwater are the exceptions.

They are just two

The problem with this country....is there are TOO MANY people on "the" State Retirement System. Guys just  looking to add an extra year, to get their pension from the state.

As we go broke....as a state and country.

Google "Greece economy"..

Mangino and Wolford are friends.  When Mangino and Kansas parted ways (the year after the orange bowl game), I saw Mangino at a YSU game and congratulated him for his success.  He did a lot with a lot less talent there.  I asked him what he was doing at the game and he told me that he was giving Wolford a hand.  I haven't seen him since.

"I haven't seen him since"......not GOOD.

Wonder WHY ??

Mark Mangino needs a job.... And he's from this area. Thoughts?

Met him years ago...Bob Stoops guy....I was impressed. Blue collar. Might just be perfect here with Wolf and the current staff.

Had his "big issue" day. Folks who pursue greatness, Type "A"'s ocassionally get caught in these. (TYPE "A"s raise your hand)

I hold no grudges to him. Nor should any of you. I have made thousands of mistakes in my life. Made 10 today!

I'm imperfect. (the key is to try to not make the same mistakes twice).

But Mangino here at YSU should be a new thread.

I'd be interested in the comments. He is later in his life. Could be a "LIFER". Staying here the rest of his career. A Larry Keres (Mount Union) type.

Stability in coaching is often overlooked.

I'm liking a Wolf  (energy) / Mangino (maturity) thing. Great post!

I'll take that as a compliment.

Be careful what you wish for.

Heacock was fired to the utter delight of many on here.  In fact, people are STILL bashing him if you read all of the threads.  Heacock coached here without the infusion of  money that magically appeared when Wolf was hired.  What could H have done if he could have paid his assts more than $40K?

I like Wolf but he should get some mentoring from an older hand in the off-season.  Yes, he will still be here.

As for the recruiting.  Obviously we are over-looking football players for athletes.  That has to stop.

Agreed.

Wolf does a lot of good things. But some folks are good certain things and not so good at others. No shame in that. We are all good at some things and suck at others. Some guys are head coaches, and some are (should be assistants). Again, nothing wrong with that.

Head coaches must communicate well and be influential.

Anyone ever hear Wolf speak? :'( :o :-[

Assistant coaches should be "fire and brimstone".

Yelling loses it's effectiveness, when done all the time. Kids shut you out/down. Only well placed yelling is meaningful. I can remember my dads "stare" when I was a kid. He used it infrequently, and he didn't have to say a word. It was effective because he used it only when absolutely necessary.

In between those stares, my dad "taught" and "coached" me. It worked, I'm not in JAIL!!! LOL

Nuff said. :-\

I'm a Hess fan.

Hess, while struggling, still isn't the problem IMO.

When he has time to throw, and Cook gets his, Hess is damn good. Both of those scenarios haven't been present the last 3 games. Hence the decline in performance.
