And Indy is exactly right. The 1-AA powers that be would rather you play a crappy Valpo team because they're also 1-AA than an excellent D-2 team. So consider it done.

i doubt the powers that be prefer teams to play soft OOC schedules
its a mistake not playing better teams in OOC

For all of the misery Valpo basketball has given us over the years, I personally took great pleasure in the two thrashings we gave them and wish they were on the schedule again next year so we could do it again.

i dont i rather see a team that could help us better our playoff chances or playoff spot later in the year

Valpo fan here, but with Youngstown alumni in the family. Just wondering how you feel about this matchup since it's so one sided. I can't see it being much of a challenge for you, and Valpo can't put up a better scrimmage than Mooney could. Don't know if this matchup continues, but I suspect it will get revisited in a few years.

*Anybody know what YSU is paying Valpo to take this beating?

YSU probably didnt give Valpo much, maybe 50K? its not like this is Pitt you're playing or anything.
i find it sad we would even try to schedule a DIII like school to begin with, especially when its just a game for Backups after the first 8 minutes or so

8 minutes might have been giving Valpo too much credit. It was 21-0 after 5 minutes.

Anybody know how long Hess stayed in the game? When did the backups come in? 3rd string? I know Valpo played their starters almost the whole way. Anybody on the roster from Valpo you thought was decent? Awful? Just trying to guage vs. a legit scholarship D1AA program

*for the record Valpo is non scholarship

i think Hess only played about 8-10 minutes, same with Cook hence the 8 minute comment. too hard to tell if anybody on Valpo looked good or bad we went with some very vanilla play calling after we took the starters out on both sides

YSU Penguin Athletics / Kurt Hess Records
« on: September 08, 2012, 06:58:38 PM »
9 TDs away from Career TD record (should do it vs NDSU)
2,300 Yards away from All time passing yards (should get it this year, had 2,400 last year)
4,200 Yards away from All time total yards (should get it next year)
20 Total TDs away from All time TD record (should get it this year)

its scary to think not only can he break 3 Great YSU records this year, but he can also win a NC, do it with a much better completion % then Jeff Ryan (Ryan was 57%, Hess was 64% last year) and in 1 year less outside of all purpose yards. By the time he's done here IMO he's going to put those records so far out of reach its going to be hard to see anyone breaking them. i think he has a legit shot at 90 Total TDS and 9,000 Yards which would be Remarkable (48 TDs and 5,200 Yards away) i figure he's going to get 20-25 more TDs this year and around 2,500-2,800 yards

YSU Penguin Athletics / Fresh QB Jeff Clegg
« on: September 08, 2012, 03:43:32 PM »
As i posted this in the recruiting form, im not sure how many check it so i figured i would at least try to get some discussion going. 6'1 200 4.45 (yes you read that right) from local Berlin Center
heard from one of the coaches about 3 weeks ago not to be surprised if he beats out Angle and Wargo in 2 years after Hess is gone. he is RS This year but the staff said he has looked like a star in the making, strong arm and very fast, and runs hard like Tebow when he gets hit with contact, said he's a Youngstown Throw Back QB, Hard working, dedicated, and talented.

he passed for almost 2000 yards last year with about 30 TDs, 2 Ints, ran for almost 600 Yards with 13 TDs and no fumbles.

i spoke with a coach from WR last night before the game who talked to Montie (Sam Montgumory SP?) to ask how Jeff Clegg was doing, said Clegg would be the #2 QB if Hess was a SR because then they could play him in blowouts or if Hess gets hurt but he can sit for a year and compete for that job next year, Sam loves that they can RS him this year for him to learn the system and play book for 2 years before he starts, but he's done nothing but impress the staff,  one coach compared him to Otto Graham, said he has a will to win no matter what, runs like a RB (and DBs have trouble tackling him), but has good enough QB talent to play QB at this level. they really feel like they got a steal with the kid and he was under recruited because he was so small and played at such a small level of HS ball.

Steve Zaborsky will start at DT today instead of DeCracker because of his knee injury I'm guessing

be ready for a Late hit or un-sportsman like penalty or 2. Fact: he averaged 1 late hit/Un-sportsman like penalty in his HS career per game. hopefully college matured him but i always thought he was a little bit of a punk in HS durring some of the games i saw

still a D-1AA with at most 65 kids on scholarship playing a school with at least 20 more kids on scholarship and leading the whole 60 minutes including an 18 point lead at one point , when Pitt was favored by 17. 35 point diffrence at 1 point folks.

I agree about Albany. That's why I think we should start preparing for UNI this week -- focus next week on the Danes.

or we practice for and worry about Valpo this week
more important game, because its saturday not a week from saturday

YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: YSU releases depth chart
« on: September 05, 2012, 05:32:39 PM »
If I am wrong, I freely admit I am wrong. No biggie. What is a biggie is playing for a team that will not allow me the opportunity to move up on the depth-chart. I still do not think this is the case here at YSU ...but it is possible.

nowhere did i say players were not allowed to move up on the DC. i said its just not going to change from week to week, unless a player has an outstanding preformance in games or practices, but its not going to change from week to week like baseball lineups just for the fun of it, coaches stick with what works best and thats why we wont see changes this week because of the Pitt game. Hell i won 3 NCs at my school and 1 year the line-up never changed outside of injuries, yet we went 15-0
