YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: Cleveland State

I agree with the above post.  Some of our guys have fallen off from what they were doing in the early and middle parts of the season. 3 point shooting has really fallen off as has the free throws. Only DC and BR have been a bit reliable from the 3 point line. And the press bringing up the ball needs improvement. It may be we are playing our guys too many minutes and they are tired. Our bench is questionable at best and we keep our starters in for the most part at the end of the game. Yesterday we took some bad shots, missed a lot of three's and free throws, had steals on inbounding the ball in the back court, and had CSU make some unbelievable shots and we lost by 3.  I think the coach can fix the inbounding the ball problem, but the rest may be difficult with our team beyond the starters not contributing that much. John Lovelace, Myles Hunter, and Shemar may be the answer to get us some rest for the starters. Thursday will be big in my opinion so hope we are up to it.

Wright State beats Northern Kentucky tonight so only Milwaukee is in 2nd place with 4 losses.

Cleveland State a tough game Sunday at 1. Only about 38 hours rest and travel from Indiana to Cleveland. Hope we are up to a difficult trip and game.

Dwayne saved us yet again. When others are not scoring he will. AD played well and gave us a great boost shooting those 3's at the beginning of the 2nd half.

Now hopefully we can rest up and play a string game at Cleveland State. Questionable calls cost RMU tonight against CSU and helped Milwaukee yesterday.  Amazing how the refs go with the home team in many games.

I saw the Cohill last second layup in the Wright State Game on Sports Center at half time in a game on ESPN.

Not sure where to look to see what was listed as "Cohill made ESPN top ten moments for last nights move # 8 highlight in believe."  Are the top ten moments listed and shown on line or just where are they shown?

We are really playing well and we sure have the best talent I have ever seen on a YSU men's team. Hope we can keep it up, especially the defense like yesterday and score like we did yesterday also. I was not expecting that type of showing with the triple overtime game Thursday, but we sure came to play and didn't look tired like I expected.

Attendance numbers are a mystery. Is it tickets sold, butts in seats, who knows? It was nice on Friday to get the crowd we did which took a lot of work by many to bring fans out, especially the students who actually stayed for the entire game. We had a great showing on national TV. Students complain about nothing to do at YSU on weekends, but don't take advantage of many of the games on campus. But Friday they were there.

Back to the games on Friday and Sunday. I think our team is better than any YSU men's basketball team I ever watched and I have gone to games since they played at South High School when my Dad took me to games. Really special players so we have a legitimate chance to win the conference tournament and get to the NCAA tournament for the first time ever. I recall the game when Mike Rice was the coach and I think it was Von Luten called timeout and negated John Keshock's game winning shot that would have sent us to the NCAA tournament. Unfortunately the next try was a miss and we lost.

I think Dwayne Cohill is the player most responsible for both wins this weekend. Whenever we are down and things are shaky, he takes control and gives us a few baskets to get our confidence up and we moved on to wins in both games. He gets things going good after some setbacks and the others get confidence and get back to producing. He plays his best when we are in trouble. He quits passing and takes control. Not sure the coach likes it, but it has worked most of the time. Hope all the guys keep it up and we at long last end up in the NCAA tourney.

The time and day of the game is very strange. They could play on a Friday night which might draw an audience, but Sunday with the pro games on is not good. It will not showcase FCS Football like it could. Anyone know who or what group makes the decision? It is on ABC which I don't think has any Pro Football any more.

Our men's team is the transfers. Much of the time our 5 players on the floor are all transfers. We are able to recruit transfers of much higher ability on average than players out of high school. It is the new reality in much of college athletics at our level. I never thought we could gain the transfer talent we have brought in, but it has worked so far for us. We now need to reevaluate our entire program to meet this new reality with easy transfer, NIL, etc. Need simpler O and D so new players can fit in easily since now we have great players individually, but not so much as a team. This is the new world of mid major college athletics for us in my opinion and we need to take advantage of it the best we can.

YSU Penguin Athletics / The Transfer Portal YSU
« on: December 15, 2022, 02:02:04 PM »
I saw on the news last night that YSU football has 4 players in the transfer portal. I knew of Crenshaw but not any of the others. Anyone know who they are and effect of their loss?

I know the rules are changed for now on the portal. Football has 45 days now and 15 after spring ball for players to enter the portal. The school selecting the player out of the portal need to guarantee the financial support until the player exhaust eligibility, graduates, or leaves the school even if the player decides not to participate in the sport. Designed to cut down on transfers. Also in past years way less than 50% are picked up out of the portal so those entering have to be sure of the decision or suffer not being picked up.

I also saw the other MVFC schools and numbers of those entering the portal. Western was tops at 17 or 18 while SDSU had none. But they are in the playoffs and still playing. Also NDSU had 6.

The game schedule may have been influenced by a YSU policy where athletic teams are to avoid scheduling games during finals week as much as possible. Final week starts on Monday at YSU. That alone doesn't explain why the game could not be played on this Saturday. Maybe Ohio U has some issue with that.

I have Armstrong cable. With that and a name and password for Armstrong, you can get the game on your smart phone, PC, or smart TV. I get all 3 and many Ysu sporting events are on ESPN3 which I get that way. If you don't have cable, not sure what your options are.⁷

We need to come ready to play from the 1st snap. MSU has good players, but as yet have not shown they have a good team. Don't let them get that straight against us.

Watched their game against SDU. Seems like they are vulnerable to the pass game so hopefully MD and the recievers have a good game along with the O line. On D need to contain the QB and K State transfer running back.

With a strong effort I think we can win.

Finished watching the game on line. We are way better than last year. If we can jell as a team we can be very good in my opinion. Some of our returning players from last year may have trouble seeing the floor. Cohill was head and shoulders better than our other players last year in my opinion. This year he is really good, but so are others! We have real size, athleticism, and skill this year. Rare for us as far back as I can remember. It could be an interesting year.

Unbelievable win again! But luck follows better teams and seems to go against weaker team. We know about both sides of that equation. MD can make some outstanding throws when the protection is good and he sets his feet and at times has trouble with blitzes and strong pressure. But so do most all QBs. Our O line disappointed me on Saturday, but are way better this year than last. Blitz pick up is shaky and number 8 is not big enough to provide a strong extra hand. And when we go empty backfield we are inviting a blitz and strong pressure. Still need more growth there. On D our D line seems good, but we sure fell for the QB option around the ends. Not sure who's responsibility it is, but they missed it often. Our pass rush is ok and coverage is at times also, but we have trouble with tall receivers and our shorter D backs in coverage. We need a few more of number 2 in the D backfield to cover the taller receivers. And our zone coverage is mostly not that great. But we do enough to win and the players don't give up. The coaches are building as can be seen with our results later in the year. Sure wish we had MD as the starter all year to get the experience he needs. But he has done great under a tough situation. Now we need to clean up some of the errors and get two more good showings and wins.

I think we are better off with MD even in the wind. Short passes will still be there and that threat makes number 8 much more effective. With Crenshaw in at QB if all he does is run, they will catch on quickly. If he passes poorly all we have is what we had before MD. It did seem like Crenshaw ran the ball with more authority Saturday than he did before MD. I guess the coaches need to make those choices. I hope they are up to it.
