Our offensive and defensive play calling is sure questionable! On 3rd down both offensively and defensively we lost the battle of play calling for the most part. We are not good enough to win with questionable calls. Too predictable. We were missing number 2 and 23 on defense which hurt. I think they both went out last week with concussions. MD suffered some drops during the game which hurt. I think he should have run on the 1st field goal and had some poor throws, but after all that came back at the end. Hard to evaluate a grade for him today. Hope for major improvement next week on O and D. South Dakota won today against Southern Illinois who were undefeated in the league till today so next week will not be easy. This keeps it interesting.

I see this as a big game and measuring stick for our year. MD has done well, but needs to get better for us to win out and hopefully get to the playoffs. The defense need a pass rush and better play from the linebackers. If that can happen I think we can win out. If not too bad. I felt that MD was needed all along to get our pass game going. But he lost valuable playing time early in the season. Hope he can catch up along with the rest of the team. Today needs to be a solid win with improvement in our weaknesses. We will see. May be a stretch, but I think it can happen like it did with Hunter Wells a few years ago.

I recall a great player from the past, I think his name was Quinn Humphrey. He was the rebounding leader in the Horizon League and a top scoring guard as well as I recall. He played in Europe I think and they had a reception for him after his career was over in the Round Ball Room. I don't recall all of this for sure, but hopefully someone else does.

I agree that the QB change has made a giant difference. Too bad he didn't get the opportunity to play much in the 1st few games this year to gain that game experience. Hopefully he can improve as the season goes on and that will make our team that much better. Also the defense was torched when they didn't know pass or run, but at the end when the time was short and ISU had to pass, they looked so much better. Same with our O when it can pass or run. Seems like the coaches get cautious with MD and go to running 8 too much later in the game. And at the end of the first half same issue, too afraid to throw the ball. There is potential in our O now.

The game was winnable, but up front they were bigger and stronger than we were. Their D line got significant pressure rushing 4, we did not. Their O line protected the QB so he could survey the field and find open receivers, our QB needed to look fast and throw. Also he couldn't escape because their D line had him surrounded for the most part. I think for a first start under those conditions MD did a good job. Since when did we have a run and pass game? And a significant offense beyond number 8? Not lately. We can now run a complete offense except the designed QB run. Much more of an offense than before. We still need more players that can impact at our level and I think the current coach will get them.

As for our coaching, it is lacking. The defensive breakdowns are too common when playing the loose zone we sometime are in. The 1st 2 drives had numerous break downs. Not sure what happened, but they sure had open receivers. And the offensive play calls are questionable, especially in the red zone.

But there is hope. I think our future is bright.

We need some offense to win this and other games this year. With Crenshaw the other teams have figured out that we can't throw long so they stack the box and make our run game difficult. Either Crenshaw begins to throw better or we need MD to have a chance. Not really sure what MD can do in game situations because of his limited time in games when the game is on the line, but he at least gives us a chance. With a passing game we are difficult to beat by the teams in our league this year. Even last week against NDSU, we had a chance with MD. Who knows how the game goes if he starts, but nice to think he can be the QB for success. I think the coaches really want a running QB in our future to have a total college offense, but DC doesn't seem to be able to do the entire package. MD needs the week of practice reps to be given an honest chance for success. Lets hope that is what the coaches have done this week in practice and he starts so we can turn this season around for the good or find out MD is not the answer.

Who knows what is going to happen at the QB position our our Offensive play calling? Both need significant improvement. But I remember being on the sideline at the Fargo Dome and watching us get beat with the forgotten QB inserted to start that game, Hunter Wells. We lost but we got our footing and made the National Championship game. Hope DM can do the same this year. Remember that our run game scares everyone. So the pass game should be there. Somehow our wide outs are rarely open. Our O line is lacking, but improved from last year. Hopefully our coaches are up to the job and get our pass game going to take the heat off our run game.  As a YSU fan I am hoping for the best for us.

To have any chance we need to throw the ball to at least an average level. Without that I think we are doomed. Also we need to get our athletes in space, not in the clogged up middle. Our athletes are faster and with more moves than theirs  and we need to take advantage of our strength. But it is not easy if we have no passing game. I think our defense has a good chance against them, but the O worries me. And we need some imagination on offense that sure has not been there to help. If Crenshaw can't do anything, give MD a chance.

I thought our Defense played as well as they could. Our zone defense is lacking with too many holes for receivers, but the man defense is good in my opinion. Both would be helped with a better pass rush, but against a number 9 FBS team, you really can't expect that. Our D will be ok in my opinion, but they need help from the Offense, as does our team in general.

The Offense is lacking any passing threat. Unfortunately against a 9th ranked FBS team you can't expect our O line to give the QB lots of time. BUT our QB really stares down his primary receiver and is not all that accurate. If he is not going to be a part of our run game, Mitch Davidson would be a much better option in my opinion. Almost reminds me of the year that Hunter Wells was a forgotten QB, was inserted and we went to the NC game! Not saying that is in the cards this year, but in my opinion MD deserves a chance. And we lack a power back for short yardage situations like 1st and goal at the 2 yard line. No doubt we should have tried to run the ball on 1st down and forget the fade route in the end zone that seems to be our only pass play in close. Every team knows that by now. Reminds me of when Bill Narduzzi was the coach and he had his favorite play, a quick kick on 3rd down.

In summary our defense is good enough for us to win more games than we lose, but the offense needs to get going soon or we will lose quite a few games.

I don't know how other states fund their Universities, but Ohio is mostly based on attendance. YSU is not going to commit to Athletic budget increases as funding currently exists. I am concerned that we can stay where we are with the current decrease in enrollment. The University of Akron is firing tenured faculty due to budget shortfalls.

We had our chance with the MAC in the 90's and did not make it. Reason rummers persist about Akron and Kent not supporting us. Another version has us not making the financial commitment the MAC wanted for entry. I don't know what the truth is. I can believe either reason, but don't know for sure about any of that. I can see us competing in the MAC, but not many of the other conferences in FBS. Things may change with the power 5 schools changing what they want and knock the MAC down to our level. Then we have a chance.

I think we just do not have the financial resources to go to FBS. Our region is not attracting more companies and thus more families and potential YSU students which is the main driving force for YSU income. Look at Poland schools as just one example of the lack of potential YSU students in our future. Need to work on improving our business climate to get more companies to want to locate here if you want YSU to grow to where we could think about FBS. Look at the trouble Akron U is having and their business climate is better than ours in my opinion. Remember Athletics is a losing proposition at all Ohio Universities except OSU when looking in financial terms.

My take on the game. The Dline is improved against the run. Not much of a pass rush though. The pass defense was lacking for the 1st 3 quarters. The zone they played much of the time would let recievers run open as they stood in their assigned spot and then try to tackle them after an easy catch. And with little to no pass rush that did not work. The 3 interceptions were encouraging and the result of the zone defense so maybe there is hope, especially if the pass rush improves. The man defense was better, but not up to last year at the end of the year in my opinion. The Oline is better. Did some good run blocking, but the pass protection was lacking, but may be better than last year. The QB never had time to really look over the field. The QB throwing did not look any different than last year, and for the most part our recievers were well covered. Tomzak was a bright spot. Much substitution on defense so by the end of the game I think Duquesne was gased. Our depth seems improved.

I will be there watching with hope for a good year. On O I will be watching the Oline to see if they run block for 8 or if he needs to make runs on his own. Also will the pass protection be good enough to allow the QB time to throw or run for his life. Will the QB throw well and will the receivers get open? On D our pass coverage was good at the end of the season. But we lost the corner coach to Purdue. Will the coverage still be good? Will the Dline get any pressure on the QB? Will we be able to control the run with the Dline and linebackers which was poor last year. And have the running back not always falling forward when tackled. Those are the keys in my mind.

Saw where Wright State lost their first two games in the NCAA Tournament. First Game against Virginia Tech 15-9 and the elimination game 11-9 against Gonzaga. Scored enough runs to win, but the pitching was not up to those team’s hitters. Gives an idea of where we are as a D1 baseball team against the big schools.  We were fortunate this year to have some success against some of the big schools. But our games against the big schools were mostly against the other teams non weekend pitching. To be fair we used mostly non weekend pitching also. We did ok fielding a somewhat competitive team with a limited budget except for our losses in the portal. Will need to see how we do in the portal this coming year.

As for a new field on or near campus, that seems like a long shot at best these days of declining enrollment. Need to hope we can maintain where we are in all sports under difficult financial times.
