YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: Doug Phillips
« on: February 13, 2020, 09:02:05 AM »
Go, it became clear when I saw his salary, that we were not going to go after an experienced group of coordinators and this is upsetting to me. This is what a mean by a national footprint. It is not as if YSU is a dominating team anymore and recognized by many players nationwide.

Also, this does not mean that I will not get behind our new staff, I am already there. It seems as though coach P is doing some homework and look how many mistakes coach Wolf made going after a nationally known experienced candidate at DC. Yet his regional hire at OC, turned out to be a sensational choice. It is becoming equally clear that JT is more involved at this point, he is a recognized commodity.

You're killing me Smalls! How do you figure that Wolfords OC was any better than the DC? I know you love Monty but face it he had a huge problem in the MVFC as all the coaches and assistance had since YSU entering the MVFC. Monty's O put up incredible numbers during the weenie schedule but when it came time for when it counted (MVFC schedule) the statistics fell drastically. JT was the only coach YSU had that did well in the MVFC which yielded ~ 97 NC, 99 Runner up NC, 2000 1st round loss to Richmond. Since JT Heacock's 06 run and out right MVFC championship ring was his glory. Wolford's 5 years zero zip nada! Bo 2016 run with Wolf's kids and a bit of JT magic was his glory.

Thanks for your attention!

Kent St signed 5 players within a 40 mile radius of their campus. Out of those 5 players none were offered by YSU

Pessimistic: Bo probably figured out that none of these 5 guys will come to YSU.
Optimistic: Bo probably figured out that none of these 5 guys are good enough for YSU.

Lets see,,, Go to a MAC school and play on national TV Tue, and Wed nights or come to YSU and hang out with Bo

Go to a school with a history that includes 4 national titles or go to a school that will never get the chance to compete for a meaningful championship? I dunno, I guess the TV thing is a big deal, but Mount Union gets to play on national TV almost ever year too.

A bit of sarcasm and a lot of truth to my statement. Brother Bo is no longer a HC at YSU due to many reasons but one major reason was recruiting. Secondly, the school history only rings true to us old timers the casual fan even in Y-town sadly still thinks 1FCS is D II and Can't states appearance on ESPN right before Thanks giving until Christmas sways more recruits than YSU's 90's NC at 1AA. Mount Union wow you are reaching  ;)

Yes Mount Union example was a reach but it’s true, Kent and Akron aren’t the only local schools who get national TV coverage. I just don’t want us to use TV as an excuse. I think a motivated coaching staff can certainly overcome the MAC TV bump. And beating Akron next year would also be huge for recruiting

I don't live in the area so "IF" I remember and they make it to the Stag bowl then yes once a year for me.

Youngstown State (FCS – OH): Source tells FootballScoop YSU plans to hire Troy Rothenbuhler as offensive coordinator / quarterbacks coach. Rothenbuhler was scheduled to coach quarterbacks this season at Eastern Kentucky (FCS) after coaching tight ends there last season. He previously spent six seasons as OC / QBs at the University of Findlay (D-II – OH). Rothenbuhler and YSU head coach Doug Phillips were previously on staff together at Bowling Green.

Nice and EKU is on the schedule, 4th game I think? Also, purely coincidental I'm sure, but two of our 2020 recruits come from Eastern KY and are pretty good players (on paper).

Very exciting but scary at the same time to see "IF" these guys are up and comers and ready for the leap to the MVFC or YSU may be doomed for years to come inquiring mind want to know  fb

Interesting read.  Heacock and Wolford fired after winning seasons.  I think YSU decided to part ways with Heacock when he was 3-5, and then won the last 3 games.

Heacock's downfall was an 0-9 record vs UNI.

Asking Phillips to go 6-5 is asking a lot with what is returning, and a tougher schedule than last year.

UNI can beat YSU dressing their band for some reason  :-X

Arguably 01 Heacock's team should have made the playoffs and could have surpassed it  fb

The MVFC is the problem! YSU has 86 win's in the MVFC since it joined in 1997. YSU is only averaging 3.9 wins a year in the MVFC! This is why playoff appearances have disappeared.  :police:

YSU Penguin Athletics / Food for thought for the haters!

Hmmm, The MVFC's been feasting on YSU since the Guins joined it.

Wolford and big bad Bo,, really stunk it up.

A few say Wolford is the best coach: The numbers don't add up,,

In his tenure (5 years) 18-22 in the MVFC.

Bo was 18-22 (5 years)

Heacock was 35-30 (9 years) with 1 outright conference championship (06)

So since throwing the MVFC numbers around as a coaching measuring stick by the numbers Heacock was YSU's best coach lately and he did it with less $$, facilities and support.

The New Coach's bar isn't set to high to average 3.6 games (win) a year in the MVFC like Bo and Wolf did fb

My two cents for what it's worth (no dog in the fight) just a casual fan.

MoRon and JT are going the cheap route to coaching until Donald D'Alesio is done learning the ropes in his "unpaid" stint with BO at LSU. He'll come back as HC and they'll rename Stambaugh to D'Alesio.

Sadly JT seems to be going off the deep end  with the good ole boy system :'(

Who said Dalesio’s job at LSU was unpaid?

Sorry I skimmed the article and thought I seen a comment about an unpaid position.

One of Tressel's great strengths while coach here was his ability to recognize and hire assistant coaches. The track record of those who started here and went on to success at higher level jobs is very solid. The relative lack of success of those who followed him and even Slocum on the basketball side partly due to the weakness of their staffs and their inability or unwillingness to improve them.  If the new coach is unable to find a staff that enhances his strengths and compensates for his weaknesses he will likely fail as well. I hope he is smart enough to ensure that he has the resources to hire a quality staff and the ability to recognize coaching talent that Tressel had.
If TT is as smart as we all hope he is, he'll use JT to assist with asst. coaches!

TT is way smarter than we thought not taking a welfare paying job at the state of Youngstown  >:(

YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: The next YSU Head Football Coach
« on: February 06, 2020, 09:12:26 AM »
YSUGO, you are both comical and delusional.  Anyone who thinks Montgomery deserved to be the head coach is not looking at the big picture.  He was 17-31 as a head coach at Miami, including a pair of 2-10 seasons.  Terry Hoeppner the coach prior to Montgomery had 7 straight winning seasons before leaving for Indiana.  Montgomery took a winning program and ran it into the gutter.

He did a good job at YSU under Wolford.  As for James Madison he walked into a perfect situation, they were loaded with offensive talent, a veteran QB and offensive minded head coach.  James Madison and ND State were so much better than anyone in FCS, I think even without the great Shane Montgomery that JMU would have been in the title game.

Montgomery is a good assistant coach, he showed nothing as a head coach, zero.  He is like Jon Heacock, but not as good as Heacock.  Being an assistant is where he belongs, not running the entire program.

Heacock did not get the $$ support and facilities Bo and Wolf got but his teams were equally as good. I'd say Heacock is a better HC than Bo or Wolf.

It can't be worse than the Pelini era.  Losing to Butler, 2-6 conference record this past year.  Let's be real, the Pelini era was a bust.  I give him all the credit in 2016, and the win at E. Washington one of the best in school history.  Other than that year, garbage.

Let's give Tyrrell a chance and support him.

Credit for going to a NC game with Wolfords recruits! As they faded away so did his football teams. I WAS a big fan of Bo, I thought he could bring back YSU to the 90's glory days but I believe he left an empty cupboard for the next guy and this football program is now the laughing stock of all of 1FCS let alone the MVFC.

Bottom line: Bo was a miserable recruiter and the players he recruited were quitter's. No consistency, no heart no Grit like the saying goes (Grit U)  ::)

Moving on I'll support the new HC, actually with the state of the program we might not see results for quite a while   fb

Bigred,

The kids that we signed in December are contractually bound to YSU for next season, unless we were to release them.  Of course, they could just sit out a year and then go wherever they wanted.  Hopefully, they will be receptive to the new coach.

Thanks Wick, I was thinking that, but somewhere I thought I heard a HC change can release them without penalty?

This is from national letter.org which has a ton of info about what a letter of intent means.

This was a FAQ about if a letter of intent is valid if your coach leaves

Yes. The NLI you signed with an institution remains binding if the coach who recruited you leaves the institution with which you signed. When you sign an NLI, you sign with an institution and not with a coach or a specific team.

Great thanks.

Soooo, am I to assume the YSU football program signed all it LOI's in DEC since I can't find any announcements for 5 Feb 20?!  :-\
