Down by 22 to 0-4 team!  Great!

They're 3-3.... not that it matters because it's still PRESBYTERIAN! But yikes.

Folks...it comes down to recruiting and managing NIL and the Portal...none of the coaches that you mention had to deal with NIL or the Portal.  I can guarantee that if JT had to deal with NIL and the Portal - most of the star players that led to NCs would not have been there - OSU, Michigan, Pitt, WVU, Cinci, Penn State, MAC Schools, etc.. would have raped our program of Tamron, Deligianis, Vecchione, Hogg, Wilkins, Jones, etc..those kids would have left for $$$$ and would not care about NCs at 1-AA. Wave a a few hundred thousand, an SUV, etc.. in front of those kids who grew up in YO and that money would have been life changing let alone millions of $$$.  YSU would have been looked upon as a minor league for the big schools.  Tressel would have resigned and moved on and no way could have dealt with that pressure to reload every year by paying kids and sucking up to them..DP is dealing with a different monster and the Dakota teams don't deal with the portal as much as we have to due to no schools being in proximity of them - 4 schools in 2 states that dominate recruiting....If I was head coach, I would hire people who just deal with NIL and the Portal - business managers, HR professionals and Customer Service experts who can manage and satisfy these spoiled football players and their families of today.  Expectations are different - look at VA basketball coach - retired on the top of his game because of all of this BS. Nick Saban - gone!  We have found a way to ruin college sports in a matter of a few years! That is why people are losing interest because we all know that you only need to buy a good team now and not develop players. We don't have the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$. Let's face it - back in the day - we might have a mediocre season but we knew what we had coming back and who was making progress and that we would be good the next year - now you can't count on that philosophy! I would not want to be a college football coach today because we turned a pretty much wholesome game (except for the violations exceptions) into a business.  That is why people are losing interest...

Spot on. Great post.

I'm a bit perplexed what you guys want DP to say at his press conferences. I'm not defending the bad season by any means, but it also sounds like you guys want to complain just to complain.

Whatever his plan is it is not working at all.   He needs to get with the times because portal is part of the recruiting process just like basketball.    He needs to adapt or resign if he cannot.  Recruiting starts with your own player retention then portal finds then high school or juco.  Am I correct?
It’s not that simple though… it’s much easier for basketball teams to use the portal because you’re only playing 5 players at a time and have a team of 15. With football, you’re playing 11 players at a time and a roster size of 63 and up. It’s apples and oranges.

For the remainder of this season, we could just keep venting with Fire Phillips and Fire Strollo chants, but we all know that is not going to happen. How about sharing some realistic suggestions for pathways to move out of this mess. I will start with these three ideas.

First, at the conclusion of the season dismiss the dc and all the defensive coaches. Then find the next Jon Heacock, a young, ambitious coach who has proven his ability as a dc at a lower level.  Bring him to Youngstown, pay him the top salary for a FCS dc, and give him nearly complete authority to build a competent defense. That includes huge input in the hiring of position coaches and the ability to purge the roster of all the current players who are clearly in over their heads at this level. Phillips won't like having his authority compromised, but he can always resign. Phillips deserves no say in the construction of a defense after the junk he placed on the field this season.

Second, inform the folks who run the Penguin Collective that all funds for the foreseeable future must be earmarked for football and men's basketball. I am a big supporter of women's sports, but they will have to wait until we move through this crisis.

Third, stop splitting so many scholarships. I don't have the exact figures, but we give out too many partials and hope to "develop" unprepared players. Out of the 63 scholarships, about 50 should be full, given to recruits or transfers that we know can play right now. Then take about 30 walk-ons who would try to earn one of the 13 remaining scholarships each year. We don't need 100 players, with the majority "projects" that will never help us.

What realistic suggestions do you have? Please keep the "fire" rants (appropriate as they are) in a separate thread.

Fact check: of the ~550 student-athletes at YSU, only about 50-60 are on full scholarship.

And that is the problem. We have access to 63 football scholarships. USE THEM. Stop giving partial rides to individuals who are nothing more than practice tackling dummies.

But again, just because we have 63 doesn’t mean they’re full ride scholarships… because they’re all not.

Assuming Phillips is our problem at this point and making a change would be the downfall of the program.  Tressel had a 3-8 year sandwiched between championships and not against the level of competition we play now. Coaching changes have not worked well for us in the past.  Generally they don't.  Look at the Brown's and I am a browns fan.  They have constantly changed coaches and qb's since 1999 and see where they are at.   Our program needs to stabilize.  The Steelers are a stable program.  So Is Duquesne.  A coaching change after this season would be a disaster.   We are young and our d has potential,  if they keep improving I can't see why we can't end the year with 5 or 6 wins.  Btw, I believe our rb room is loaded from what I see.  The kid from Niles just came In and we have a couple backs now behind King and Wright.   Go guins

With all due respect, this team is not winning 5 or 6 games. That's fantasy land type of hopes.

Our remaining schedule:
@ South Dakota St (defending National Champion, 4-1)
vs. South Dakota (4-1)
vs. North Dakota (4-2)
@ Illinois St (4-2)
@ Southern Illinois (2-4)
vs. Northern Iowa (2-3)

Perhaps we can win one or two against SIU and Northern Iowa, but that still brings us to 3-4 wins. We certainly won't beat any of the Dakota teams and Illinois St is a good team as well.

I mean, I’m happy we got the W, but it was against the worst team in the conference and we almost blew a 21 point lead.

Brungard had all of 71 yards passing and our D still gave up some huge plays.

Brungard is still really struggling with the RPO, reading defenses, and just seeing the field as the play develops.

I wish I could say I can come away with a positive outlook, but I simply can’t.

Great comeback! But not enough. The offensive play calling deep in our territory may be the worst play calling ever. Run the ball and hope for overtime!  WTF were we thinking?  That was horrible!! We could have taken them  to overtime and had a chance. Once we were throwing and stopping the clock I knew it was over!  Defense looked better in second half but my goodness the play calling at the end of the game was horrendous!  Just knew it was coming!  We found a way to lose!!

We put ourselves into a position to win and still found a way to lose. Amazing!!

100%.  I thought the same.  Some of the posters are wondering if Beau is a qb at this level and I would say he has a long way to go but he does move the chains and he a little tricky to defend.   Not sure YSU has that guy with the speed on offense that can be a game changer.

My two big issues with him is he doesn’t process the field well at all. He’s very slow to process. And so far, doesn’t seem to have a very strong arm. I’m not saying he has to have the arm Mitch did, but they’re really lacking the ability to push the ball downfield.

The jury is still out to whether Brungard is a D1 AA QB, but he is a D1 AA athlete.
He’s a great athlete but I have some serious doubts about him being a capable enough QB at this level.

Offense showing no urgency. Apparently playing for OT.

Not trying to be an a hole, and I tuned in to the game on TV in the third Q, but what’s the story with the coach on the telecast?
I suspect he has some medical issues that affects his speeches.
Good jobs team, didn’t see this coming….
I really wasn’t trying to be mean or make fun of the guy. I had no idea and was just genuinely asking.
