I think Ethan will do a good job . Hopefully he can maintain our current players and recruits and finalize the roster with some quality transfers. He seems like a serious person who will work really hard to be successful. At times I thought we got out coached this past year, for example Oakland both games by a very experienced coach Kampe. Hopefully Ethan can do a great job with all parts of the head coaching responsibility. I think he can.
-
Dynes’ dad was publicly advocating for Faulkner.
-
The hire is a stretch if you ask me. Not a ton of experience. Doesn't mean he won't be successful. With such a quick decision it's almost as if this was the succession plan all along.

We had another Coach in mind but he turned us down.

Realistically this level of D1 basketball is a stepping stone for coaches and players to bigger and better places. Watching the tournament teams have many kids that have transferred in from the mid majors and I’m sure the same is true for coaches.

Agree. It used to be just business and career decisions for the coaches to move up depending on their levels of success and accomplishments.
Because of NIL and liberalized NCAA transfer rules, this model has now also become applicable to players.
Unfortunately, the low to mid major schools now become the minor leagues or developmental leagues for the power 5 conferences.
It is difficult enough for mid major schools to compete with the big boys with basketball being the only revenue sport for these universities where majority of the budget could flow into basketball to keep it competitive.
It is even more difficult for schools like YSU where major funding is channeled into the football program.
I don’t see how things could improve unless enrollment at YSU could magically increase or some depth pocket donors are willing to write a big check to support the athletic programs.
The other option is to schedule more money games on the road to get more $$$ as what Cleveland State did years ago under Rollie Messamino (spelling?).

Bob Huggins 😂

Bob Huggins 😂
I think Huggins would of been a disaster hire. He's a great basketball coach but his baggage and the fact that he's 70 years old probably would of been a quick fix at best.
It's all about recruiting whether it's HS guys or portal and hopefully Ethan can be that guy. Hopefully YSU has some NIL money because if not sadily you can't compete.

Agree, when I read this, the name Bo Pelini came to mind.
The nil $$ for mid major programs will be a real issue. I read an article yesterday reporting that Zach Eden of Purdue was ranked at #7 with nil of $800,000.
I wonder how much our guys were making in the last couple years.

It’s official Ethan Faulkner named Men’s Basketball Head Coach

My concern is the assistants on staff. Will they follow Calhoun or stay? Any info on this ???
-
As I suspected just Reese is on the ysusports.com website. So, to answer your question it appears they're gone.

Just out of curiosity, did Calhoun take them, did they not want to stay or did Faulkner not want to retain them. L know Calhoun brought two of them with him to YSU from Fairmont State.
Hope new coach has already had some new ones in the work.
-

I know of one for sure that is going with Calhoun.. that’s Paul Molinari. He was with Calhoun at Fairmont, brought him over to YSU, and now also heading to Utah St.
-
I just read on the YSU sports website, that all the assistant coaches on the women’s basketball program are gone also. Did any of them were retained or did YSU not list them until new contracts are finalized.
It looks like the head coaches for both programs will be busy filling the coaches’ vacancies.
-
Molinari is probably going to USU and not sure about the other two. Coach Faulkner has a lot of work to do between recruiting and putting together a coaching staff. Almost forgot he has to rerecruit the players from last season.
-
If you ask me this is a lot like the Phillips hire. On the job training with limited resources for assistant coaches. Also, I would think Faulkner has to be one of the youngest coaches in D1. Hopefully his enthusiasm and hunger make up for his inexperience.

Paul Molinari, Manny Robinson and Ben Asher are all going to Utah State with Coach Calhoun. Utah State press conference today to introduce Jerrod

He definitely has enthusiasm!
From a February 20 article: "Tevon Saddler, the youngest coach in Division I men’s basketball, has Nicholls State in its accustomed position near the top of the Southland Conference heading into his 29th birthday on Wednesday."
Faulkner is 33
-
I just have one question about Faulkner. Was he actively engaged along with Calhoun in recruiting from the transfer portal over the last two seasons? If he was, we might be okay. But if Faulkner just recruited freshmen and had little hands-on experience with the portal, then the program is in serious trouble.

Gabe Dynes' dad was actively pulling for Faulkner to get the promotion. Faulkner also had a lot to do with Langdon transferring in this season as well.
-
Losing Ben Asher is going to be tough. He was on the Silver Waves 2024 Rising Stars for Mid-Majors and I believe he was responsible for a lot of recruiting. I feel pretty good about Faulkner - great hire!

Hopefully, Faulkner also had something to do with recruiting Gabe so we might be able to keep him this year.
Among the recruits from the portal last year, Langdon clearly was not as goos as Reid, Thompson and Burns. I hope Faulkner also had some responsibility in bringing in these three.
If he was inspirational in bring in all 4 last year, we might be ok in bringing in good players via the portal this year. We will find out soon enough.

From today’s Tribune/Vindy on Faulkner
https://www.tribtoday.com/sports/local-sports/2024/04/former-nku-coach-confident-faulkner-is-ready-to-lead-ysu/
-
Good support from a former HC at NKU. We need to be patient with him. Recruiting is the key. We have not lost too much in the transfer portal so far. So hopefully rest decide to stay.
-
Has there been a press conference yet with Coach Faulkner? I had thought I read where there was supposed to be one last Wednesday, but I haven't seen it posted anywhere and there's been nothing from any local media.

There is nothing on the YSU website.

Maybe they meant tomorrow.

I was under the impression of last Wednesday as well. Now everything has been pretty quiet on that front.

Pretty sure it was to be last Wednesday.
Robb Schmidt did a quick 2 part interview on Twitter.
Other than a couple articles I've seen, it's been pretty quiet
-
Ironically just saw this on YSU Basketball Facebook:
Head Coach Ethan Faulkner will be introduced at a press conference tomorrow that we’ll stream on our Instagram at 3:30 PM. It will also be on the YSU Sports YouTube channel. #goguins🐧

This appears on YouTube posted prior to his Utah State U. Job.

Per a Tweet by Dana Balash, Coach Faulker's contract is 5 years at $275,000 base salary a year.
-
Definitely believe that this was a solid hire - but it was a pretty underwhelming & flat press conference.
Few take aways:
-All players with eligibility have returned (6)
-Danny Reese has been promoted, Evan Faulkner (brother) has been named, Mark Richmond (former director of operations at YSU) has been named, too.
-Much of the offense & defense will remain the same
Thoughts...
-The confirmation of returning players was definitely welcomed news
-think it is a great and well-deserved promotion for Danny.
-his brother, Evan, specialized in recruiting, scouting, and player development for UPIKE.
-Was expecting a little more excitement and pull back the curtain more.
-

So does this mean that Breland will.be sticking around instead of transferring?
-
From today’s Tribune/Vindy on the coach’s hiring. Lots of information on his contract that was not shown on his press conference (YouTube).
https://www.tribtoday.com/sports/local-sports/2024/04/ysu-officially-introduces-faulkner-as-14th-mens-basketball-head-coach/

I don't see Breland name on the list of players returning.
-
I'm glad it appears to be a seamless transition and Coach Faulkner will carry on with Coach Calhoun had established. It's good to hear that apparently everyone else is staying...wish we could have retained Lovelace.
I did think the press conference though was pretty lackluster...just 10 mins including questions. Can't believe there weren't more questions from the media. And nothing from Strollo.
-

Apparently, they emphasized several times during the press conference that they want one to one meeting after the comments by the coach.
I could tell the coach is not as a dynamic speaker as Calhoun. I guess that is a difference in their personality. It really doesn’t matter as long as he gets the job done.
BTW, who was the guy introducing Faulkner, he never introduced himself. I was surprised that AD didn’t personally introduced him.

33YO, thanks.

Coach Faulkner was featured on Penguin Gameday yesterday evening. He did a lot better in that setting. Coach Jackson was on, too. She is going to be terrific. Such an exciting time for hoops!

You would think Strollo would introduce Faulkner but apparently not. Failed in that respect.

Where are the signings for Men's basketball?? Any??

Where are the signings for Men's basketball?? Any??
I probably shouldn't get impatient but I'm seeing other programs getting transfers and we're at zero. I just saw that Tahj Staveske transferred to CSU and he was a guy that I was hoping we would get. I felt more secure in this process with coach Cahoun than I do with coach Falkner based on his past track record although I know Falkner deserves a chance an I hope to see it.
-
The transfers are coming soon enough. We will be fine. Can't be comparing to a timeline of last year considering we had to go through the process of losing our head coach and then hiring his replacement over a period of time. Also Coach Faulkner has been finalizing his staff which will help him finalize the roster of transfers in the coming weeks.
-
Thought his staff was finalized as he had two assistants present at the press conference. Makes no sense.
-

Not sure how having 2 staff members at his press conference would translate to having a complete staff finalized?
Anyhow, first transfer to commit is Canisius Guard Siem Uijtendaal. Averaged 13.3ppg for Canisius this past season.

Nice get...now we need a point guard or two. More forwards as well. I think we need 4 or 5 more to sign.
-
Siem looks like he can shoot it from deep and from watching his video that he has a decent B-ball IQ. Videos are deceiving but he looks like he can help. Second on a 14-18 team in scoring at 13 pt a game and I read he set a school record his Jr year with 10 3s in a game. Scored 24 vs Robert Morris and 16 vs CSU last season.
-

Agree.
As of right now we have seven players on scholarship.
PG David Wilkerson
SG/wing E.J. Farmer
SG/wing Siem Ujitendaal
SG/wing Elijah Guillory
Forward Christian Kirkland
Center Gabe Dymes
Center Imanuel Zorgvol
Both Depante and Fryda are listed as walk-ons. Looks like there is room for 6 more players either from HS or the portal. Need another pq at a minimum and probably two. Power forward/muscle down low is a must.
-
Thanks for clarification UFCPENBUCK.
-
I missed the Canisius transfer from all the garbage posts. Was starting to get little worried & still a bit am from the lack of signings. Is Elijah Guillory still committed?

Need couple power forwards from the transfer portal, similar to those combos we had for the last two seasons.

YSU just received a commitment from a player from Lane Tech - Shaheed Solebo out of Chicago.

Pretty impressive he was able to land two D2 head coaches as assistants on his staff. Obviously the situation at Notre Dame College, with it dissolving, helped Mark Richmond return here, but Dwaine Osborne's squad just went to the D2 Sweet 16 this past season. They went 29-5 this season.

Nico averaged 15 a game his Jr year.

Nice gets on the two. Gives us 10 on roster now. We need a power forward and 2 point guards through the portal or juco now. No more freshman.
-
Maybe 9 total not including the walk-ons.
-
Does anyone know if we will get a point guard or power forward in the current recruiting class? Verbal committs has just the 3 we signed this past week. 2 transfers and a freshman from Chicago. Anyone hear of any rumors??

Ty Harper was supposed to visit this past week. 6-3 guard from a NAIA school that averaged 22pg a game. He previously played D1 at Lousiana and Eastern Washington. Saw it on line but no other info.

Elijah Guillory has signed his LOI. A lot of us were wondering but he's a Penguin.

Thanks for the info UFCPENBUCK

Back up PG at VCU. Played in all 37 games and averaged 5 pts a game.

I started putting him in as a commit and realized it was just an offer. He looks good but has some decent other offers but would fit in nicely.
A note on Nelson is that he was a starter for Richmond 2 seasons ago which is an Atlantic 10 school so this guy brings some value. I know some do not like 3 schools in 3 years but this is the NIL/portal era.

-
Coming together recruiting class. Just need I believe 1 more rt?
-
Ucf, thanks for the posting. Ty Harper seems to be very quick and athletic. He reminds me of Cohill.
As for Nelson, sorry, after the last couple of years, I am just not too thrill on 5’10 guards anymore.
-
My count has us at 11 scholarships with two openings. I think we need a little muscle at the forward position. We have enough pt guards and off guards. Small forwards are set and we have the bigs in the post to protect the rim.
On paper it looks like a nice roster similar to what coach C would of brought in the last couple of seasons. You don't win championships on paper so like almost every other team in the portal era we need to see how the chemistry comes together.
I'm the glass is half full type but I'm really excited on the way coach Faulkner is structuring this program. Have some guys coming in with D1 experience that have a history of scoring the ball.
-
Faulkner will be speaking at the Curbstone coaches today. We should have better understanding of the season and recruits. He should have a few players present I would guess.

One of the reporters quoted coach Faulkner that he'll have 2-3 more players committed within the next 72 hours. I thought they only had room for two. Said that Toledo and W Michigan will be at Beeghly this upcoming season.
-
Stephen F. Austin will host a Multi-Team Event (MTE) November 21st through 23rd, featuring Monmouth, Presbyterian, and Youngstown State, per sources.
Full Round-Robin. Three games per squad in three days. All games played inside The Sawmill.
It's very hard to fly to Nacogdoches Texas. Shreveport La is about 97 miles away

Thanks for the update. Where did you see the info at ?

If true, I like the aggressive scheduling. With the transfer portal, NIL, lack of funding, Beeghly upgrades I think YSU needs to be aggressive with regard to chasing money games.
-
Just a follow-up to my earlier post. I just read an article that NKU is nearly doubling MBB ticket prices mainly in center court and courtside. The article also mentioned that NKU has cancelled a GALA and golf tournament because the financial return just isn't there.
-
I asked coach Faulkner at the Curbstone Coaches event...all the info I get is from that event. Including the big schools we are in contact for game this coming season. Ohio St is close to reality.
-
Goodnews you hit it on the head. We need funds

Green Bay's coach Sundance Wicks is moving on to Wyoming after just 1 year. That's a big loss for that program after what he accomplished last year.

How much better would college athletics be if the NCAA had ruled decades ago that coaches and institutions must abide by contracts. For example, a coach that signed a five year contract with a school could not be dismissed for the duration (unless he was convicted of a crime.) Likewise, a coach would have to honor a contract for the duration before moving on to a higher paying job.
-
They need to do something about this NIL nonsense, and coaches not abiding by their contracts! College basketball is not the pros where essentially teenager are free agents to who pays the most financially. They have ruined college sports with their greed!
-
DMorton you are so correct.

Very weird. Hard to imagine that's going to work.
-
I saw a site on line that said 56% of transfers are still uncommitted. I think YSU still has two openings and it was this week last year that we received two commits that finished out the roster. Not sure the timing is going to equate to last season however I saw back on the 8th a reporter said that YSU would have a few commits in 72 hours . That predicted timeline has not happened but I would think there can be some movement by this Friday.
-
He plans on doing both. Good luck greenbay

It almost seems like a joke. I can't imagine what Green Bay fans are thinking. Got things turned around last year and your coach leaves and now this. Seems like it could be circus.
