YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: CSU vs NKU Horizon league championship

I'm going with CSU too.  I have some personal ties to CSU and was hoping for a northeast Ohio championship showdown. Disappointed YSU couldn't get to the NCAA's to be sure, but it was great to have so many competitive and meaningful games and fans in the seats at Beeghly this year!

Local schools gave away a lot of free tickets. Went with my wife and grandkids. The kids were able to get 4 tickets each that they got at school.

Yesterday would have made sense, but today for game day is baffling to say the least. Every bar in the US would have had the game on if it were a 1:00 start yesterday and avoiding conflict with yesterday's later NFL games. It would have exposed many to FCS and at least created the possibility of generating some interest in the game, as opposed to today where almost no one will view the game.

Any injury info? How is Jody Webb? It looked like he sprained an ankle and was on the sidelines wearing a coat during the final drive, but it looked like he was on the field for the last play.

Didn't anyone else get upset with Pellini's terrible clock management? How TF do you get first and goal with 44 seconds and 2 timeouts in your pocket and you don't call time out?  There was time enough for at least two additional plays if you actually use you time outs intelligently. That terrible blunder could have cost us if not for an amazing catch.

Tickets in hand!
Got my tickets yesterday. I will be going with my 2 sons from out of town. We used to go to all YSU home games and playoff home games when they were growing up. We all remember the game against Nova when Goode made the fourth down catch and Wilkins nailed the field goal into the wind.
Go  Penguins.

Herb Williams - but love the enthusiasm!!

Go Guins!
You are right. I got those two guys mixed up.

There were the three famous 4th-down catches, I forget who was involved in two of these if anyone remembers:

1) in the 1997 title game that toss for the games only TD by Tidwell to Ray.

2) I think it against Marshall (but could have been Nova), where the 4th-down pass was caught about the 10. I remember he was completely extended and we thought he would land out of bounds. I was standing less than 10-yards away and I held my breath that it did not touch the ground.

3) The 4th-down toss that bounced of off 2 and was caught.

Can someone refresh me on 2 & 3? Stick or ET?

except the 97 touchdown to Ray was on 3rd down

YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: FCS 2015 Playoffs. Did I really see this?
« on: November 23, 2015, 08:10:09 PM »
I "used" to be the biggest supporter of the playoff's at our level.

1. The playoff are boring and no one cares.

2. Regionalization sucks.

3. Bidding on a home game for $$ to the NCAA sucks!

4. Auto Bids are bad!

"IF most of you forgot I'll explain how a true championship and playoff should work.

Take the 24 best team's period. Let the conferences reward the champs. Seed teams 1-8 for the bye week. Seed 9-24 for the rest of the field, the higher seeds get home game.

The way it's set up now the 24th team that has an alumni with $$ gets a home game over the 9th seed! Stop the region crap "IF" 12 is in FL and 13 is in WA state so be it.

Bottom line: 1FCS is a money pit for most schools anyways so these home game bidding is nuts. Also not many people outside the 1FCS community watch these games anymore since they are all on ESPN ?? Need to bring these games back to network TV (CBS) or air them on the regular ESPN or Fox SN channels.

That is all,,, Carry on..

...Except 16 teams was the perfect number. Anything more is getting into NBA/NHL territory.

Paterno failed to do the right thing in what may have been the biggest decision of his life. Even for those who deny the Freeh report, Paterno UNDENIABLY knew Sandusky was a pedophile when he received an eyewitness account of Sandusky sexually fondling a child. On hearing the shocking account, did Paterno call the police? No. He determined the absolute minimum he was legally required to do and did just that. The guy who had the real power to do something, who never accepted the minimum from any player, thought the minimum was acceptable. Even more telling, he never followed up. Would Paterno’s reaction have been different if it had been his grandson in the shower? Does it matter? Paterno is one of several who failed to act, but I expected a lot more from a man of his power and supposed stature. A man deified in his own lifetime with a 7 foot tall statue: no doubt created to commemorate his humble nature and in appreciation for his generous donations to PSU, made possible by the generous sums of cash he was paid by PSU. (BTW- Saban has a damn statue too! Anyone else see anything wrong with ‘golden calf’ statues to living sports coaches?)

Paterno chose the institution and his personal reputation above high ideals and the rights of children, EXACTLY like the Catholic priests who thought the reputation of the Church was more important than upholding their moral beliefs or protecting children. People fail, even priests and famous coaches. Paterno is not the devil. He is just a man who made positive and negative impacts on the lives of others. The positive impact he made on my life is in reminding me how easy it is to do the wrong thing, and how extremely difficult it is to do the right thing.

It seems the soon to begin FCS championship game has been forgotten. Even ESPN who is broadcasting the game makes no mention of it. Is the three week layoff benficial or hurtful? I admit I hate the long break at it destroys the continuity of the playoffs. One week off at most would be more reasonable. Having three off then competing for attention with the FBS championship and the NFL playoff does not seem to promote or highlight FCS football. Wouldn't it be better to play earlier and compete for attention with the bowls?

YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: Bo Knows Recruiting
« on: December 21, 2014, 10:09:24 AM »
most top athletes (major sports) are marginal scholars. If we show a kid a program in teaching athletics, coaching, or the ability to play at YSU for 3+ years without having to declare ...then you have a recruit.

Lack of funds for these type of programs has plagued small schools (such as YSU) for years. Our money has to go for the basics (reading, writing and arithmetic). It is like my dad and I always say about Ohio State ...a Chinese national can get a PHD in advanced underwater basket-weaving if he/she can also play ping-pong.

So we are not selling YSU short, we are realizing what it takes to get and hold top athletes in today's market. Most of these guys do not want great Engineering programs, they want to stay in school for 3 to 5 seasons.

Exactly what is wrong with scholarship college football and baketball; lowering the bar, throwing away all integrity and giving a student athlete the facade of an education in exchange for success in the 'market' that is college athletics. The price is too high.

The UNH stands themselves look fine but who puts a track around the field? Is it a design from 1950? I'd take our stadium over that any day.

Agree with Spiderlegs; this is exactly why YSU football should remain where it is. The only disadvantage is the lack of 1-AA programs in this region, but not worth going to the MAC for that.

We were probably at or near the top 24, which is why we missed the palyoffs. Totally disagree with Pizza's conspiracy victim viewpoint. We obviously were in the playoffs if we win just one more game; no need to win the conference but we must stop tanking every November.
