Penguins Fall Short in Home Dual to UIC

Youngstown - The Youngstown State women's tennis dropped a tough 4-3 dual to UIC on Friday afternoon at the Boardman Tennis Center. YSU split the six singles matches with the Flames, but could not get over the hump after losing the doubles point.

YSU lost at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to fall behind the Flames 1-0. At No. 2, Paula de Man and Lauren Hankle let a 5-2 lead slip away before falling behind 7-6. The duo hung tough and forced a tiebreaker which they won to win the match, 9-8.

In singles play, de Man defeated Haley Craig at No. 1, 6-2, 6-2. The Flames picked up wins at No. 5 as Kathryn Sharples defeated Carolyn Jesko, and Kati Mebuke beat Annina Brendel 6-4, 6-4.

After Marta Burak defeated Natalie Kuvakina 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3 and Margarita Sadovnikova won 6-0, 5-7, 6-4 over Mariana Palcios the match came down to the No. 4 spot between Lauren Hankle and Jana Knoppe.

Hankle dropped the first set 6-3 to Knoppe before winning the second 7-5. In the third set, Knoppe won 6-3 to lift the Flames to the victory.

With the loss, YSU falls to 12-9 overall and 3-2 in the Horizon League. UIC improves to 12-5 and 4-1.

The Penguins return to action on Saturday against Valparaiso. The match is set to start at 5 p.m. at the Boardman Tennis Center.
