Can we still make the playoffs if we win out?
« on: October 22, 2012, 12:22:31 PM »
Well, can we?  I see us dropping to around 23-25 in the FCS top 25 and possibly dropping out all together, considering the losses and how we lost the last game.  Current site showing playoff projections do not have us in there at all.

"IF" YSU wins out it would be hard to keep them out especially with all the parity in the other leagues. The strength of schedule, 1FBS win all Div 1 schedule will be huge.  Not many FCS level teams will have 8 D1 win's.  ???

:'( 7-4 YSU will be out.

Professor Chaos's playoff prediction for the MVFC

For as strong as the MVFC looks as a conference this year it's looking more and more like there may only be two bids out of the league. These are the order, IMO, from most likely to grab a playoff spot to least likely.

1. North Dakota St, 6-1 (3-1): Remaining games are SIU, @MSU, SDSU, @ISUr. Winning 2 of 4 should guarantee a spot.
2. Indiana St, 5-2 (4-1): Remaining games are USD, ISUr, and @YSU. Winning 2 of 3 should guarantee a spot.
3. South Dakota St, 5-2 (3-1): Remaining games are YSU, @SIU, @NDSU, and USD. Winning 3 of 4 should guaranee a spot.
4. Southern Illinois, 5-3 (4-1): Remaining games are @NDSU, SDSU, and WIU. Winning all 3 should guarantee a spot and could give them the autobid.
5. Illinois St, 6-2 (3-2): Remaining games are @UNI, @ISUb, and NDSU. Winning 2 of 3 should guarantee a spot.
6. Youngstown St, 4-3 (1-3): Remaining games are @SDSU, USD, @WIU, and ISUb. Winning all 4 should guranatee a spot.

I'm guessing it'll play out where NDSU finishes at 9-2 or 10-1 and is in easily. I think Indiana St finishes 7-3 (6-2) and is likely in as well. However, after that I think there's going to be a jumble at 7-4 with at least 3 of the 4 remaining teams there. With the number of teams in the other power conferences that will be 8-3 or better I think it's going to be tough for the MVFC to get a 3rd team in. Time will tell.

Should we get our act together at SDSU, there are two games this week that could really help us.  We need UNI to beat Illinois State and NDSU to eliminate Southern Illinois. (four losses will finish you off this season.) Both UNI and NDSU are at home, so this should happen.  I then expect NDSU to eliminate Illinois State on the road in the season finale, as NDSU will be playing for the number one or two seed.  If all of that happens, winning the last four will get us in.

Not sure they will let us in if we don't win all 4.  One of the factors they committee uses is if you have been winning the last few games.  WE were left out one year because we were on the bubble and did not win out.

You people are living in a fantasy world if you think we're making the play-offs now!  We're done for the year and SIU sealed our fate.  We will not beat SD State because we can't stop the pass, and they're the best passing team in the MVFC.  In short we need a better defensive plan then the one we have because this one is not working.  Penguinpower has it right, we have to win out.  That ain't happening my friends the way we're playing!

I'm more worried about the offense than the defense

Well at this point I would agree about our fate, and what I think is going to happen with us and the post-season. However, an 8-3 team with a win over Pitt is going to be in the post-season.

As to SDSU, I agree that we will not be able to stop them, but for the opposite reasons.  Sumner plays well for a Soph, but he was not #1 in the conference (like Hess was) as a soph. He only has 5 TD passes in 7 games ...only 4 of which he actually threw a TD in. He is not overly efficient either, but that is what this conference is known for ...he is still rated at 111.5.  They do have an awesome young TB in Zenner ...easily the best in the conference ...I think better than Bell, as he is more mobile ...this is our worry.

Barring a rash of upsets the last 4 weeks of the season, it is going to be very difficult for any 7-4 team to make the playoffs.  There are still 20 teams from the top 6 conferences with 2 or fewer losses.
MVFC - 4, SOCON - 2, BIG SKY - 4, SOUTHLAND - 2, CAA - 5, OVC - 3

QUESTION

Does it matter if we make it to playoffs
and are NOT playoff material?

The records indicate which team goes,
and which team waits for another year.

Sorry to have to wait another year, but
for right now that seems to be what
shall be.

If we win out we will make the playoffs. If we make the playoffs by winning out, we will be on a 4 game winning streak and obviously feeling better about ourselves than we do now. Once the playoffs start, anything can happen. Did anyone think Indiana St would win at North Dakota St or Missouri St would win at Illinois St? So if you make the playoffs, you are playoff material. A loss Saturday ends those thoughts. Let's see how it plays out.
