INDIANAPOLIS -- Horizon League athletic directors have unanimously approved a change in League operating regulations that clarify the implementation of the National Collegiate Athletic Association decision to add a $2,000 cost of attendance allowance to athletic grants-in-aid.

The Horizon League will add the $2,000 in scholarships for men’s and women’s basketball.

“Our operating regulations reflect our long-time League-wide philosophy of providing NCAA-determined maximum scholarship amounts in the sports of men’s and women’s basketball programs,” said Commissioner Jon LeCrone. “This vote by our athletic directors supports the continuation of that strategy which has a record of success.”

Butler has reached back-to-back national championship games in men’s basketball while Milwaukee and Cleveland State also have reached the Sweet Sixteen in recent years. This past March, Green Bay became the first Horizon League program to reach the Sweet Sixteen of the women’s tournament.

LeCrone said the decision to add $2,000 to full scholarships in other sports will be left to the individual institutions.

Sucks that the money will probably come from football.  I could care less if we even play basketball.

We can live with this.  I feared that the Horizon League would impose that $2,000 addition on all olympic sports.  That we could not realistically handle.  Providing the subsidies for football and both basketball programs is reasonable.  Athletes in non-revenue sports should just be grateful for their already generous scholarships.

ESPN story

As Big D alluded to in an earlier post the extra money coming to the Horizon from Butler's runs in the tournament the last few years should be able to cover this.
