YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: BO PELINI: THE NEW HEAD COACH AT YSU

And a guy who has made the playoffs 3 teams and been bounced in the 1st round every single time. No thanks.
You do understand YSU hasn't made the playoffs since 2006 and that was the only time it's happened since 2000, right?

Dean Hood is a solid guy. He and Urban Meyer go way back. They jointly operate a football camp at the Spire Institute in Geneva every year. This is interesting.

I will take back everything I said if he does return to YSU. Also note the following tweet:
@vinceguerrieri
I hear Bo Pelini was at #YSU yesterday checking out the facilities... #sources

FWIW, this guy is verified on Twitter. Thus, you can take what he has to say with more than a grain of salt than the infamous Hard Rock Rocksino Marketing Director that said Tressel to Nebraska was a done deal Thursday last week!

I don't know if Bo Pelini is coming to YSU to coach, but I can vouch for Vince Guerrieri. He's a Youngstown guy with some credentials, not some guy living in his mom's basement or working five different fake message board accounts.

The problem with the Vindy, IMO, are the same problems most MSM outlets have....a lack of balance....which makes the Vindy is a propaganda tool for the Democratic-Socialist Party.  When you lack balance, everything is suspect.  The same goes for MSNBC or Fox News......if there's obvious bias than nothing can be trusted.

The Vindy serves a region that participates in widespread groupthink, so offering other perspectives is not demanded by the readership.

My suggestion would be to have guest columnists with a Libertarian perspective, as it would offer balance as well as expand the readership base.

The Vindy isn't all bad....the comics are somewhat credible.

No D or R cards are played in sports. Why politicize everything? Can't the sports pages (and the sports interwebs) be free from political tumult?

The horoscopes are the most legit section in the Vindy.
It must be true, because some anonymous internet guy said it. ;-)

Ed seems legit.

The Vindicator, however, is not.

That and 50 cents might get you a cup of coffee.

People, do not feed the troll.  This man (through his five screen names) is trying to turn this message board into a joke, and you are playing right into his hands.
What are the other four?
edpuskas, 1a4YSU, Kandras, FOOTBALLFOREVER  ???

I can assure you I am my own man. No alter egos here.

ED, ask around. Big difference in recruiting at the D-III level  and recruiting at D-I. D-III is phone calls and letters/post cards as D-III doesn't have the budget to recruit as D-Is do.  The AAU trail and campus ( organized) visits make up a lot of D-I activity, entertaining and wowing the athletes. D-III sends them off to hang around the players  lives. LOts of $$$$$$$$$$$ and attention at D-Is.  Night & day. Interests and  interaction    with parents also key.  Needless to say, if it was easy, many a successful D-III coach would be promoted to D-I. Rarely happens. And for good reasons.
I don't doubt that the way it's done is different. I'm just not ready to say the guy automatically can't do it. Buffalo may well regret the decision. We'll see.

I think, in general, too much is made of the supposed gap between coaching levels. I know a guy who was a D-III assistant, then a coordinator at the same level. Then a position coach in what is now FBS. I look up a few years later and he's an NFL coordinator, and a couple years later, a head coach in the league.

If you can coach, you can coach. If you can recruit, you can recruit. If you can do both, you'll be successful.

Risky ? Try plain stupidity.  Buffalo will be a laughing stock. Watch the program over the coming years. Even in the MAC, they will struggle to win.
Yes, it's a long way from D-III to FBS and maybe Lance Leipold makes it and maybe he doesn't.

But not knowing how to recruit? I'd say that will be pretty far down on the list of reasons if he flames out there. Recruiting is about hitting the road, selling your program in high schools and in parents' living rooms and getting people to buy into what you're selling. It's about having personality and building relationships. Some people are good at it. Others struggle with it. Nobody knows if Leipold can or can't do it. Buffalo is betting he can.

Jim Tressel did it extremely well at YSU and Ohio State. And yet, there were more than a few people who said the same thing about OSU after he was hired there that you just said about Buffalo.

My guess: Pat Narduzzi and Luke Fickell aren't taking pay cuts of $500,000 or $600,000 to come to Youngstown if the job comes open.

This really isn't as complicated as everyone is making it.

IMO...two wins for YSU = seed and a bye.   One win, preferably over ISUb = at large w/ a probable home game.  Scalzo wrote a piece saying one win = in.

Re: JMU...my wife is an alum so I follow them.  I hope they make it.  Their OT loss to DE forces them into a must win at Richmond...they'll crush Elon the following week.

I think the CAA gets three in (NH, Villanova, and the winner of JMU v. Richmond)...and maybe four if DE beats both NH and Villanova (not likely).

Scalzo is wrong more often than he is right when he makes these predictions. I wish he would keep his mouth shut. Like when he wrote a couple years ago that YSU fans shouldn't attend games because YSU was out of the playoff race.

That's not true. If you're even going to try to throw that out there, you should come with proof. The Vindicator is not a PR arm for YSU, but we're not in the business of telling fans not to go to games. That makes no sense. More fans at the games means more interest in the team. More interest in the team means more readers and more clicks on our website. It would be silly for any member of the media to advise fans to stay home. It doesn't happen.

It must be great to be able to hide behind an anonymous screen name and post whatever you want, even when you know it's completely false.

Agreed. The sports info department is very poor.

I'm going to challenge that.
