YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: YSU takes out the top seed
« on: March 04, 2017, 10:19:32 PM »
What an amazing college basketball game from start-to-finish!  YSU is finally playing like the team one envisioned earlier in the year.  It's been a long time since they won back-to-back Horizon League games.  So happy the seniors are getting a chance to enjoy success.

And now Valpo gets knocked off by Milwaukee!  4 tourney games and all upset.  The only team left YSU hasn't beaten this year that's left is UIC and easily could have won both with one going to OT & the other down to the wire.

Very nice win.  I'm glad the seniors got to enjoy another win and experience a post-season victory.  If it was the last win, I'm glad to see Donlan & Kaufman play well.  Tonight was the way I think many envisioned this team to play this year.  Shot the ball well from all over the field, made foul shots, played smart and unselfishly.  The intensity & hustle was there all night long.  Hatfield continues to impress.  Hopefully they can keep him around the next 3 years.

Wishing now Valpo had gotten the #1 seed.  We played them better this year than in recent years and seemed more competitive than we were against Oakland.  Then throw in Alec Peters out and it would have been interesting.

If it's ranked 20t, the Horizon league is not above our heads.  We just need a coach who can players in the program and provide some continuity.  Our top players or prospective top players leaving every year is not going to cut it.   How may we lose every year ?  Three or four?

We only lost Jordan Andrews this year.  A non-related basketball incident happened with Sidney Umude this summer.  Not sure his status for the future.  It was a shame to lose him.

Really don't think you can blame foul shooting on Slocum. Frantz, Donlan, Santiago & Davis have been excellent at the line. Morse has hit been hit & miss from the line this year. 8 of 10 last night but overall shooting under 70% which is disappointing. The rest of the team is unacceptable. It's hard to believe Haygood is as bad as he is & hard to imagine anyone can be that bad at this level. It's really to the point it's a detriment when he's fouled shooting if he doesn't score.

I think we'll get at least 3 more wins. I think we'll beat Detroit, UIC & win 1 or 2 against Cleveland State, Wright State & Oakland

When have Slocum's team's ever peaked down the stretch?  Where is Rosic?   I thought this team was supposed to be better defensively!  If you're not going to play your guys coach, don't recruit them.  No wonder two to three guys leave the team every season! Also, good luck with the three-game sweep the writer is looking for, I'd be surprised if YSU does not get smoked by Oakland and Detroit.

Rosic and Williams have battled injuries for most of the season.  Williams dressed last night for the first time in quite awhile.  He's showed flashes of being impressive.

Oakland for sure will be a tough game, but this team has been competitive in almost every game this year outside of Jacksonville & Ohio State.  I thought they even played hard & competed against Michigan State & Valpo.  If it wasn't for a fluke play at the end of the Milwaukee game they'd be on a 3-game win streak.  Tough loss also to UIC in OT too but they have really played pretty well & hard in the last 7 dating back to the Wright State win.

Of all the things you said Penguin Nation...to feel sorry for him just really pisses me off.  That very mindset is the reason the country is in the position it's in & so many kids grow up thinking there's no right or wrong and everything is about themselves and their feelings.  Do you feel sorry for Aaron Hernandez too?  I mean at some point you have to be responsible even if it's who you're hanging around with.

Are you serious?  You're comparing Ruiz to Hernandez?  Why not Ted Kaczynski?

That very mindset is the reason the country is in the position it's in & so many kids grow up thinking there's no right or wrong and everything is about themselves and their feelings.

No I'm not but it goes back to being responsible and who you hang out with.  One thing leads to another.  He made bad decisions whether you think so not & hurt the team.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: YSU Men's Basketball win at GB

I thought it was a great win.  Last time YSU won at Green Bay was 2003 & I think I heard it's only the 2nd win in 21 games.

I agree the play of the game was the block by Hartfield.  That was a huge momentum shift.  He has been tremendous this year for a freshman especially the last few games.  Hopefully he can stay at YSU for his career.

Every time it looks like the season is going the way YSU has stepped up a gotten big wins.  You just hope this can start some momentum.  They need to take care of business at Milwaukee Sunday and no reason not to be able to beat Cleveland State next Saturday.

There's definitely inconsistency with this team.  They've had big wins against Akron and come from behind road wins against Wright State & now Green Bay.  Also nice last minute wins against Robert Morris and Niagara, but losses to Canisus, American, UIC & Detroit have been ugly.

It's tough to see Donlan struggling so much this year.  I think I heard he was sick too last night.  Rahim Williams started the season with promise and his ankle injury has been tough.  I think he's supposed to be back next weekend.  I think Brett Frantz has really stepped up this year with Donlan struggling and had a great game Friday night.  He just seems so much stronger & has played smarter than last year.  Also has been excellent from the foul line.

Very good come from behind win.  Should be happy splitting the two road games against a very much improved Northern KY & a Wright State team that's always tough.  This team definitely has a lot of fight in them.  Other than the 2 non-D1 wins, they've come back to win their other 6 games late in the game.  Need to find a way to come out faster in the first half as YSU has trailed at the half in every D1 game except the Milwaukee one.

Santiago is so good at sparking the team in the 2nd half.  Seems like everyone feeds off his energy.  Wish him and Morse could get it going in the first half.  Good to see Donlan get to double figures.  YSU has won every game he's reached double figures except the Michigan State & Ohio State games.

Will be a tough game Thursday against Valpo but after that have a stretch of 5 games where they should win some games.

Nice win and if Donlan would have had an average game we would of won much easier.  Matt was really off.   Braun Hartfield was a nice spark off the bench.  He rebounded well and had some nice blocks.  fragile team so we need an A game from everyone each night to compete.

I agree.  Seems like when Donlon is off he's really off.  In fact that was the first game YSU has won when he hasn't reached double figures. Hartfield was certainly a spark as was Haygood.  I think Franz & Santiago have really improved their game this year.  Williams has really been struggling of late.  Only 17 points total in the last 5 games.

While it was empty behind the Milwaukee bench, I thought it was the best home crowd of the year and by the numbers it was better than the Akron game.  There were actually quite a few behind the basket across from the band.  You don't get to see the side where the camera is at on the ESPN3 broadcast.

I know all the talk is football right now and deservedly so, but I thought the men's basketball team pulled out a gritty, hard fought win Thursday night in the Horizon League opener against Milwaukee 88-87 in 2OT.  Nice to see a good crowd and atmosphere...think everyone fed off the football team being there.

That's 4 wins this season that the team fought to the end & pulled out what could have easily went the other way (Akron, Robert Morris, Niagara & Milwaukee).  The Toledo game was a damn near win like that as well.  It's a shame the Canisius game slipped away from them at the end or they could be 6-0 at home this year.

This group does play hard and if they can shoot decent they're in every game.  I think it's going to be a competitive league.  Would be nice to pick up a win Saturday against Green Bay and start league play 2-0.  I think that's definitely possible.  Cleveland State took GB to OT Thursday night and lost by 1.

Looking back, this is the first time in 5 years YSU opened league play with a win.  It's been 9 years since they started off 2-0.

I thought it was a good effort.  After Michigan St got up 15 out of the gate which I was afraid of, I thought YSU played them pretty even.  We were within 4 in the 2nd half and had a good look and missed.  Tough scoreless stretch in the 2nd half sealed it for Michigan St.  Would have been interesting with Cam.

Hate to see Frantz struggling again like last year after looking good earlier this year.  He needs to get his touch back.

I think the next two games are very important for YSU to win before Ohio State then Horizon League play.

Just heard Rob Schmidt on the radio state that Cam Morris has a sprained right wrist from the Toledo game and it has been a problem since and not getting better.  That is why he was out yesterday I guess.

Hope he gets better soon, really needed.

Yes that's what he announced during the pre-game show.  Guess they didn't know he was a no-go until 2-3 hours before the game.  Thought it was impressive to win without him.  He has seemed to be struggling shooting of late especially Saturday against Canisius...thought that was the difference in winning that game.  Would be nice to get him back for Michigan St. on Tuesday.

Thought it was a very good & important win after a tough loss Saturday.  Gritty performance & the type that's needed to win in league play down the road.

One thing about this team is it doesn't quit.  Outside of the Jacksonville game (which really didn't get away from them until late in the game) they've been in every game.  And other than the Westminster game, they've fought back to win 3 of them.  Plus they really haven't been at full strength most of the season with Rahim and Cameron's injuries.

Would be nice to see them pick up wins against Oberlin, American & Niagara and then play well against Michigan St & Ohio St and enter league play at 7-6.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: Basketball vs Toledo
« on: November 15, 2016, 11:11:50 PM »
YSU came out cold & dug themselves a big hole, but played pretty even after that.  The game just had that feel when they were trailing by 14-18 that if they could ever get some stops instead of trading baskets they could get back in it.  Too bad they let it get to a 21-point deficit in the 2nd half, but it was an incredible run they went on after that.  I really thought once they got it to OT and especially built a 3-point lead they could hold it.  Nonetheless this team has a lot of heart and should win quite a few games this game.  Hopefully Williams injury isn't too severe.  Foul shooting is a concern.  Struggled in the first half against Akron and just 9-17 against Toledo.
