John Lovelace has entered the portal.  Disappointed, but can't say I'm 100%.  Seemed like his mins and production dipped the second half of the season

The NIT turned into what we expected with a lot of the bigger school turning down invites so now they get a 15-16 Villanova team in and as a #1 seed.  There was no way YSU was getting in the NIT with the changes that were made

Cleveland St. is in the CBI tournament and PFW in the CIT tournament.

From the sounds of it, YSU didn't want to participate in a post season tourney, the mindset sure changed from a few years ago when Coach Calhoun was all about it.

The whole thing is disappointing

I agree and I too am disappointed that YSU is not playing in one of these tournaments.   2nd place in the league should be rewarded.  I really liked the guys and wanted another chance to cheer them on in a competitive enviroment and it's kind of sad that from a selfish point of view I won't get a chance to see a player like DJ Burns compete.

If it's a budget problem then it should be explained by the administration.  Can't see it being a nil issue since all schools would have that criteria.  Hopefully it's not the case that YSU basketball feels that they have moved on from a c.i.t. type of tournament with their recent success which would be ridiculous since it's only been a few years within the last 40 or so as one of the worst in D1.

I'm thinking it's a financial decision which is a shame and shouldn't be a factor that punish the players who worked so hard and the fans who admire this program.   Maybe i'm nieve.

Boy you nailed all my thoughts exactly.

Is it a financial deal with the new bleacher improvements to Beeghly?

Is it the seniors didn't want to play?

Is it the disappointment is too large, too good now for one of these tourney or is it mutual amongst the players and coaches & school?

Combination of everything maybe.

But as you said selfishly I'm disappointed because I would like to see our guys continue to have the ability to compete and see how we stack up against other schools.   See Burns continue to add to his double-double numbers.

We beat Morgan St. at home, had a shot at beating Fresno St. on the road in the past and gave Oklahoma St. everything it wanted at home last year.

I guess if it makes us feel any better, Toledo has won the MAC regular season title 4 straight years and has lost in the tourney every year.  They've went to the NIT the last 3, but might be tough this year with the changes & especially losing to Kent St today that hasn't been good this year.  They haven't made the tourney since 1980.

Obviously doesn't sound like there's any interest in playing in a post-season tourney.  I had said in another topic they are bringing back the CIT tournament.

"With Reid, Thompson, Burns and Langdon finishing out their eligibility, YSU will again be the in portal this offseason looking for new additions, especially if some current players decide to transfer to go play elsewhere, which is also a possibility."

Certainly Rush doesn't have another year of eligibility does he?  Isn't Bates done too?  Sucks he got hurt because I think he could have contributed.

As great of a coach Calhoun is we have stumbled in the post season tournament in our own league. Frustrating.   Tired of hearing maybe next year.  That ship has sailed years ago.  Less portal players and more JUCO/HIGH SCHOOL kids are needed so we don't have to go through the process again and again.   Just my thoughts.   We wouldn't be in the spot had we not had Calhoun. We have to look at what he and his staff have brought to Ysu.  Recruiting season has begun.

Losing at home in the tourney 2 of the last 3 years as considerable favorites is what stings the most let alone just 1 semi-final appearance.

So I guess the CIT tournament is back https://www.collegeinsider.com/tournament/schedule-results.php

Both of the above comments are what I was thinking.

Coach was all about the opportunity in the past about playing in post season then COVID ruined an appearance in the CIT, then it was getting into The Basketball Classic, and the NIT last year.

Add in the fact that both the CIT and TBC are gone and the NIT has thumbed its nose at mid majors.

I just get the feeling there's a lot of disappointment & evaluations going on.

I love Coach Calhoun and what he's done for basketball and the team has basically improved every year and played well down the stretch until conference play and tournament play.  It has to be frustrating cause I know how it is for all of us the fact of only one semi-final appearance since he's been here for 7 years despite 5 straight winning seasons.

I've been depressed for a week now.  Did Calhoun have any type of press conference yet?  Other than the end of game comments, I haven't seen an interview or read anything in the paper.  He talked about this years team from the beginning as if they could walk on water - obviously they sank.  I want to hear from him, in his opinion, what went wrong and in the future will he sign so many 1-year and done players.  This years team really made me appreciate last years team.

Been thinking the same.

And obviously the NIT is out of the picture.  I'm not sure there is any other option other than the CBI.  In one of those end of the year press conferences it kind of seemed like NCAA or bust.

Before Oakland, we were the only team to beat Milwaukee in the last 9 games.  Considering we couldn't beat CSU at home without their best player, even had we won I don't think we could have beat NKU, Milwaukee or Oakland.

We need tougher players and better shooters.  Those teams all had a go to guy too which we didn't this year

Well the Horizon League Championship came down to the team that was the most consistently best all season in Oakland and the hottest team in Milwaukee, who had won 6 straight & 8 of 9.  It was no surprise the game was basically within 3 points either way much of the game with Oakland pulling away to win by 7 basically in the final minute as it was a 2 point game with under 2 mins to play.

Oakland deserved this as I said was the most consistent team all year.  How long has it been since someone won both the regular season & tourney?  Oakland always play a tough non conference schedule and are always tough in the regular season, but disappear in the tournament.  Hard to believe this is their first NCAA tournament since 2010 before they were in the Horizon.

They are 23-11 but counting league play and the tourney they went 18-5 against Horizon League teams.  Their non-conference losses were to Ohio State by 6, Illinois by 11, Drake by 8, Toledo by 1, Michigan St & Dayton.  And they beat Xavier

i am not saying this is or isn't the formula for success but look at Oakland's key contributors. 3 of the top guys have been there 3 or 4 years since day 1. Refreshing to see in this day and age of NCAA and the NIL. Transfers will obviously be a contributing factor but I think having a few "program" guys certainly helps.

Yes I agree.  I know Coach has been adamant about getting "old" and staying "old" with guys that know how to win, but he didn't make some comments of late some of these teams having guys that have been there and played together.

I hope we can keep Lovelace and Farmer, but you have to wonder if Lovelace is getting antsy about wanting to start.  He was really good at times this year, but a lot of nights didn't contribute much and not a lot of mins.

If Farmer can be a more consistent shooter, he could be a real threat.  He's quick and can play good defense.

Can't imagine Dynes and Zorgvol not returning, but you never know.

Obviously need guards and a go to guy that can score.  I'd like to see a little more size as well.  I think Langdon's size hurt him, kind of reminded me of Shemar

I like them both and they both can score the ball .    Got to wonder why they couldn't lead Detroit to more than one win.  Would coach C take a look ?

My thoughts exactly.

Stone was already a senior. I would want tankersley

Stone still has a year left due to COVID, Tankersley has 2 years left.

2 other IUPUI players have entered bringing them up to 4 in the portal

Add Detroit's Jayden Stone who avg 20.8 ppg. Their starting guards avg 37.4 ppg

As expected, both Matt Crenshaw from IUPUI and Mike Davis from Detroit were let go over the weekend.

Several players from both schools have entered the portal including Detroit's leading scorer Marcus Tankersley, who avg 16.6 a game.  I don't know if that's someone YSU would look at or not. They are obviously in need of some guards.

Tough loss.  We played our butts off but the refs were destined to call every thing on us and missed blatant calls on CSU.  Hats off to the vikings prepared for us with just one day prep and didn't even have Tristan to boot.  It felt like we couldn't get over the hump all night.   Maybe we will have one of the pay to play tournaments come calling.   We deserve it.  Not in a position for the NIT due to the NIT normally goes off of the NET RANKINGS.  We shall see.  Are we ever going to sniff the Ncaa tournament?  Feel bad for the players.

I thought it was pretty poorly officiated, but that wasn't why YSU lost.  There were some bad no calls YSU and it seemed like every 50-50 call went CSU's way.

Every time it seemed like YSU could go on a run, they'd have a bad turnover or CSU would drain a shot at the end of the shot clock or get offensive rebounds.  It was the story of the entire game and why once YSU got down a few possessions they just couldn't basically get away from being down 5 or 6.

I kept waiting on a big run, but it never materialized.  Thought there was an opportunity at the end of the first half to get it down further than 6. I really thought we'd come out locked in in the 2nd half and go on a run. Made some stops on defense early on, but couldn't score, and the rest of the game played out how it was going.
