YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: Official: Head Coach Search Thread

Mike Tressel, is that a joke?  While it would be a very Youngstown-ish decision, they gotta be smarter than that right?  If that does happen, I see the choke chain on the entire administration of YSU athletic and otherwise, very very short and thick.

Sorry, I'm jumping in late here to the discussion but YSU to FCS is an absolutely ridiculous idea. When you consider the campus climate it makes the idea even more absurd. As someone who spends considerable time on campus (i.e.  I work there), the climate regarding athletics isn't positive. The faculty union cited athletics and their increased spending as a main reason for their rejection of the latest contract proposal. They even had button mades highlighting their views.

As a student I loved the idea of YSU moving up to FBS. However, once you take the fandomn glasses off - you see their is no base of support on campus for the idea or a strong enough passion from an older and dwindling fan base. Increasing the athletic department budget in such a dramatic fashion would cause even greater unrest on campus and further the divide between the board of trustees, athletics, and the rest of the YSU campus community.

Some good ole fashioned common sense!!  how refreshing!

Actually I will be more responsible, and post what 10 minutes of google-ing can explain to you.  Search YSU athletic budget, a couple of mouse clicks and you'll find, $13,540,369 for total expenditures.  Now using that same mouse we can search Kent State athletic budget and we find $25,005,983.33 for total expenditures.  So I'll allow you to use the mathematics in my universe to figure that little equation out.

Im not quite sure what universe your residing in, but a University with massive budget problems is never, ever going to be able to excel in FBS.  The sheer budget issues alone would make that impossible, let alone having zero name to recruit with.  Marshall transistioned when they were the hottest thing going in FCS and look what happened there.  Unless the university and donors see it prudent to up the operation budget of athletics by 12-15 million, plus 2 to 3 million for upgrades and facilities, YSU in the FBS is DOA.

YSU has no tradition.  You cant win 4 championships in a decade only and say its a tradition.  More like lightening in a bottle.  And trying to do that twice ends badly.  Defeatism is not needed, but neither are prideful, inflated expectations.

Better career chance at YSU than the MAC?  Tell that to Darrell Hazell, or Dean Pees, or etc.  If Luke Fickell comes here based on that train of logic, look for more of the same.

Doubt the player responses have anything to do with Wolf.  Probably has mostly to do with established players having to prove and ingratiate themselves to a whole new staff.  Nobody is safe. Especially with possible recruits that could change commitments depending on coaches moving.  Its probably going to be a bloodbath one way or the other, either through transfers or players being dismissed.  Changing coaches is always a Dunkirk, recovery depends on making the right decision to replace him.

Fire wolford and strollo at the half !!! In door horizon league women track championships don't pay for an athletic budget

Neither does an FCS championship...technically football costs an athletic department and a university thousands of times more money than a track and field team.  Just sayin.

The bitterness towards the MAC is laughable.  If you're going to the MAC your not going to win championships, you're not going to play in a bowl game.  You're going to get exposure to the NFL.  The team that YSU'ers love to hate, Kent State, has 10 guys on current 52 man rosters in the NFL 7 of those teams being playoff teams.  That's why you go to a MAC school.  That's more than YSU's history in totality.  If you want to make a roster go to Kent, if you want to make a practice squad go to YSU.  Its really quite simple.  And yes all that is from a 1 win football team.  No kid goes into their college football experience saying I just want to play and have fun, they go into it thinking they just might be the next big thing.  The bigger they go the better chance they have of signing a big contract.  If your program doesn't have this as a recruiting factor, it will lose kids to 1 win programs with this factor all day long.  4-20 year old championships don't interest kids anymore.

Just beat Kent 68-49, AT Kent!!! First time since 1996! For such a young team, with an AWESOME recruiting class coming in next year..... Better get on board with Coach Barnes and Co.......

The only program that's really going anywhere!

Great job ladies!!!!

This shouldn't be a surprise to anyone as everyone on this board seems to think the MAC is chump change compare to YSU.  This should be a gimme game for YSU.  Beating kent doesn't equal 2 All-Americans and a 3rd place finisher at the national meet, which I believe YSU's track and field team had last year.  Excitement is good.  But statements like this are just plain ridiculous.

What the hell does being Christian have to do with anything? The NCAA rules are not a joke if you plan on making a living by them.  They are a reality.  A distorted unfairly implemented reality, eerily similar to real life, but a reality none the less.  It is amazing the loyalty heaped upon a person for being a good football coach.  Apparently he walked on water one day and I missed it.

Now a deflection to Paterno?  The nation really missed the day he took 4 footballs and turned them into wine

Not on a loser they wont.  Why spend 10-20 mil to have 1000 people in the stands?  Not good business.

Doing alot with a little sounds like good old fashioned excuse making to me.  What little? whats alot?  YSU will never have a Big Ten Budget so thats a moot point.  What could be done better if he had more money to do it with?  Hiring?  Doubtful.  Hes done great things for facilities but unless you know how to utilize them whats the point.  4 national championships were won without a WATTS.  How many won with it?  How much money has been spent on "recruiting accessories"  e.g Locker rooms, weight rooms, lounges, bells and whistles? Money isn't a factor when it comes to knowing how to win.  Some know how. Some don't.

Word on the street is the football team reserved the watts a week ahead of time in preparation, to prepare for NDSU...perhaps this game was looked past...
