The sagarin rankings of YSU victories this year.
256 Valpo
241 Robert Morris
194 Indiana State
138 Illinois State
160 Missouri State
102 Southern Illinois
200 Murray State (TBD Saturday)
119 YSU (Ranking)

These rankings were prior to last weeks games.  The FCS is so weak these days that I guess it's possible that they could be considered?

I like sagarin as it is very realistic, but for any ranking purpose, it is worthless. Use the coaches poll.

Coaches loll is trash today.  It's not the same as it used to be.

Like any other game you start your best and play to win. Mitch is the best qb at this point. The other qbs, can get their playing time at the end of a blowout win by us.

I am 100% in agreement. You just don't suddenly diminish that way. Medical or psychological. We are Youngstown, we run the ball. Everyone knows it, but no one can stop it.

SDSU stopped it

My point about needing 2 people on each side of the ball is this:
You need 2 more people to create problems on the D-Line. You need to force teams to commit to 2 double teams.  That would free up the current DL to get after the QB.  Similar concept with the OL.

Running backs aren't the problem.  I wasn't overly impressed with SDSU's, but they look outstanding because of the blocking at all levels.  That is the biggest problem.

It's interesting that no one mentions the fact that they didn't do anything fancy (except for their failed trick play). They just liked up and ran their normal offense that took what the defense was giving them.

If the DL issues were addressed Marcus Hooker wouldn't be the leading tackler on defense in that game.

You've got a lot of youth on the lines. Believe it or not, that matters.

People need some perspective here, so I will give mine.

1. I don't think anyone beats that team this year (SDSU).
2. What people need to realize is we are better than 90% of the FCS.  The problem is that we play in a conference that's the absolute best of the best.  In general, whomever wins the MVFC is the likely winner of the national championship.
3. That had a team full of 6 year seniors and we are playing mostly Freshman and Sophomores.
4. I heard that Phillips was willing to speed up the transformation of the team, but was limited by the AD. In addition, His first recruiting year was shorted scholarships due to NCAA rules violations by Pelini.
5. If we get into the playoffs, and there's a chance we will (look at the remaining schedule) we would do a lot of damage in the playoffs.  We would finish in the top 15 easily.
6. We weren't aggressive enough against SDSU. It looked to me that we were trying to keep it close and get it into the 4th quarter, but they were able to shut down the run game completely. Then we were doomed.
7. We have legitimate complaints about the referees in this game. When they took that TD off the board, it was the turning point.

Keep the perspective.  We need a couple more kids.  We win will 2 more on offense and 2 more on defense (on the lines).

We need 2 on the DL and 2 on the OL.  That's it.  And a QB next year

LOL, you fools actually thought this team had a chance in this game with this weenie small time coaching staff??? These losers should be coaching D2. But hey, be glad those donor checks are still coming in since they hand picked a high school principal as head coach. They will not make the playoffs and the program is going nowhere under this loser.

For all of the Phillips haters out there, you know nothing about what he's down and what he's doing.  As I have stated earlier, we are missing 2 players on defense and 2 on offense that would be game changers.  But as I've stated many times, we have a ton of youth on the team.  They played a team with a ton of 6th year seniors due to the plandemic.  That is the standard.

I didn't expect to win but I expected a more competitive game

As I've been saying all year. Playoff do not matter when you can't beat the top team.

We need to get one more class of recruiting and need another year.  Most of our players are sophomores and freshmen

Our running game disappeared when our center went down. The redshirt freshman is doing an acceptable job but the line play is just not the same. It won't matter much next week but we need Parker back for Murray State.

We should be able to hang with SDSU for a while.  Our problem will be the fact that we won't get any pressure on their QB and they will be able to pick us apart.

We will have trouble running the ball on them and they will get pressure in us in the passing game.  Davidson will have to get rid of the ball quickly.  Special tes will have to play really well a d we can't have any stupid penalties.

We match up better this year than we have in many years (physically). And we're still young.  This team is ranked #1 for a reason.  They look unstoppable.  We need to try to keep it close as late as possible....that has to be the goal.

As I recall Wolford hired defensive coordinators that were experienced but had failed at their previous job. They came here and failed again. With salaries what they are in coaching today, assistants at most FBS schools make significantly more than our head coach, let alone our assistants. So we are in a spot where upcoming D2 or D3 assistants are where we have a chance at success. We can't attract really strong experienced candidates; can't afford them. Tressel was much the same. Remember our offensive coordinator, JK, who was the offensive coordinator in name only. Failed in future jobs. But also remember our D coordinators, an unproven Mark Dantonio or John Heacock, both of whom were really good. I think we need to develop coaches, but they need to be under the guidance of the head coach before letting them go and get what we have on D this year.

Our defense is a weak spot. It is either coaching or personnel. Injuries seem to be minimal this year on D. At the very least if we had a known weakness in personnel on D, we should have gotten help from the portal, much like we did at running back. In today's world of college athletics, I think the portal needs to be used to supplement what personnel weaknesses you have to be really good.

My observation is that the DL needs someone that forces a double team every single play.  That will open it up for others to get in there and disrupt.  This would take all of the pressure off of the secondary and the LB's.

We were very good against SIU because their OL wasn't very big.  I bet that had a 265 lb OL and we were able to get past him and disrupt.  It forced SIU to give him help, which freed up everyone else; the result was 7 sacks and no time to make great throws.

To me we need a special DL that is super disruptive against any team.  That would help tremendously.   That being said, I'm sure that we don't know our injury situation very well either.  Who knows what ailments they are dealing with at this point.

Need to tighten up on the tacking, and stop calling bonehead pass plays when it is obvious we need to run!  Third and one on our side of the field drove me nuts when we passed, and had two stud running backs to cram down the opposition's throats!

I think some of that was intentional.  It's to help throw of statistical tendencies and force the opposing coaching staff to watch ALL of the film vs look at statistics and then validate them through the film.

However, I agree, it was nerve-wracking to watch us throw in 3rd and 1

What is interesting about the defense is when they really needs big play, they usually get it.

We need to figure out how to win on the road this week.  Indiana State is no joke.  They should have beaten UND.

The SDSU game is probably going to be thr most significant game in many years. Start getting the world out about getting the community to that game

One more thing......Pelini also created a recruiting issue when YSU got hit with NCAA violations.  It cut scholarships.  Don't forget that.

Thanks Pelini.

We played two seasons in 2021. The conference-only spring season and then the full fall season. Add in 2022 and now 2023, this is the 4th season for Phillips.

Big win by YSU yesterday. This league is deep and tough. UND getting shut out by UNI and USD (and UNI for that matter) struggling vs INSU proves that point. Yes we will be favored in 3 of last 4, but we better bring our "A" game each week or else one of these teams can upset you.

6 games? We are counting 6 games?  That's practically a playoff run

We were 2-6 in conference in 2019.

Phillips was hired February 7th 2020.

Signing day was February 5th 2020.

No season was played in the fall of 2020.  It was played in 2021.  Not a problem for established programs.  This guy didn't get that benefit.  And the roster was uncompetitive
