YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: Illinois State Week
« on: October 21, 2023, 10:09:55 PM »
We have played four quality league opponents in a row. We have two quality wins and no bad losses. Unlike last season when we had no quality wins and the bad loss to Missouri State. If the defense was just average how happy would we be this evening.

I just don't understand. In our secondary we have a guy who played at Ohio State and a guy who played some at Florida. The talent can't be this bad. The schemes must be terrible for we are making every quarterback we face look like some combination of Sammy Baugh, Johnny Unitas, and Joe Montana.

I'm a baseball guy so I can't talk about football with any authority. But I do have this question. If we can't touch a quarterback with a four-man rush and rarely apply any pressure when we do blitz, would it make any sense on third-and-long to rush three and play a four-four zone? If not that something else? Continuing to use the same ineffective defensive schemes is demonstrating Einstein's definition of insanity.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: South Dakota Week
« on: October 09, 2023, 11:23:31 PM »
South Dakota earned their win at Fargo even though the statistics heavily favored the Bison. South Dakota won because they hit NDSU with a 50 yard td pass and a 52 yard td pass in the first half. They only threw the ball 12 times in that game, but completed 10 passes.

In their two conference games (against one very good team and one poor team) South Dakota has managed only one quarterback sack. This suggests to me that our balanced offense should cause them problems, as YO has indicated. It is about time that we win a conference game in one of those stupid gyms.

Southern Illinois was playing without their top running back and top receiver, but that hardly mattered as we dominated their o-line. If Baker were less mobile and elusive, we would have had at least a dozen sacks.

I agree with Pride. We better keep our focus. Every game in this league is a struggle. Heck, UNI almost lost to Indiana State yesterday. We have turned in some terrible performances in the South Dakota gym. And that against a team that we blow out in Youngstown nearly every time.

I have little confidence after that pathetic showing last Saturday. But it is time to put things into perspective. Let's look at Southern Illinois' schedule. In their OOC games, they crushed Austin Peay from that United Conference at home, and they barely eked out a one point win on the road against SE Missouri from the OVC. They also have a three point road win against Northern Illinois, one of the MAC bottom feeders.  Southern Illinois then opened league play with a solid home win over Missouri State.

So we have wins against two joke teams at home, a loss to the monster at Columbus, and the travesty at UNI (who is much better than Missouri State.) I really wonder if the results of these eight games suggest a vast difference between SIU and YSU. Switch the schedules and we might be the team that is 4-0. Of course SIU plays defense and we don't.

Yo, I admire your enthusiasm and your optimism. But our pass defense is garbage, worse even than last season. We can't compete with any quality team in the MVFC

This is the fourth consecutive failed head coach after the departure of Tressel. Wonderful. Ending the season again before we reach October. That second quarterback sneak was the WORST play call in the history of YSU football.

I watched some of the UNI-Weber State game. Weber was able to pressure Day, and he made mistakes. We simply must find a pass rush, with well-designed blitz packages if necessary. Otherwise Day will pick us apart.

Most of our games in the UNI gym followed a similar scenario. They stopped our run and we were not sophisticated enough to hurt them with a passing game. This might be the best balanced offense that we are ever sending to that cursed facility. The UNI defense could not contain Weber. I believe that we are better. We shall see.

This team has great potential, but the tragic flaw is the inability to pressure a quarterback with a four man rush. We can only hope that the defensive coaches can design some creative blitzes.

How serious is the injury to #78, our redshirt freshman offensive tackle?

Apparently they have a quarterback who throws often and with accuracy. Could help with the preparation for Northern Iowa. We should have a vast advantage on the lines. I will be concerned if we can not generate a pass rush.

Congratulations to ET and others who once again forced the university to take action. As for the director of parking who admitted "information did not get out well enough," just whose job was it to inform the fans, you worthless (fill in the blank.)

Here are some bits of info from various sources on the internet.

OSU played their starting offensive line for the entire game.

OSU played two fewer players against us than they did against Indiana.

Check out these scores from recent OSU games against other Ohio schools:
2022 77-7 v. Toledo
2021 59-7 v. Akron
2019 42-0 v. Cincinnati
2019 76-5 v. Miami
2018 77-10 v. Bowling Green
2014 66-0 v. Kent State

But Stick, Delaware plays in the mighty CAA. Watch them go up in the polls while YSU disappears!

Losing stinks but there is so much to be proud of today. Only the bookies won't be pleased.

I wonder how many OSU football players, starters and reserves that entered the game today, will one day play in the NFL. My guess is that we faced two, three, or four times the number of future NFL players today than we will encounter in our entire eight game MVFC schedule.

Did we come out of this game healthy?

I have been a season ticket holder for football and basketball since 1982. My impression is that the university treats you like royalty if you rent a loge or give generously through the Penguin Club. If you buy season tickets but do not give any donations, the university ignores you. If you are a casual fan who might buy a single game ticket, the university treats you like dirt.

Double ET,
Is not the guy that still runs parking the son of the trustee who got drunk, stumbled into Fifth Avenue, got struck by a university vehicle, and then sued the university? If so, nepotism at its worst.

Brungard did a nice job in mop up duty.  Ran well and hit his passes.   Not sure why the no-confident from the board.   Won't argue but time will tell.

Unlike Crenshaw, Brungard has all the tools to be an effective dual threat quarterback on the FCS level. I'm really glad that we have him. His only weakness is his height. So logically, should he earn the starting job next season, structure the offense so he does not often have to throw out of a pocket.

Besides the money, I can see only one possible benefit from this game. After what we will endure from OSU on Saturday, the passing attacks from Northern Iowa, Southern Illinois, or anybody else in the MVFC should not be intimidating.
