There is a reason why Wolford and Heacock are never considered for head coaching positions. The college coaching ranks would be filled with successful and happy people if men understood their limitations and stayed within them.

We have several players that can dazzle with their offensive abilities.  Unfortunately, we have very few players who can or will play defense for 40 minutes. Until that changes, we will never climb out of the second division, even in a league as weak as the Horizon is right now.

UIC has some quality Olympic sports, but their basketball teams have contributed nothing to the Horizon League since we have been members.

Since we joined, the league has moved to the east and become more compact.  Excellent travel for us now. Some of us remember that former league when we were forced to send our teams from Connecticut to Alabama to Utah and points in-between.  Now there are three league teams in Ohio, one just outside in metro Cincinnati, two (Robert Morris and Fort Wayne) very near the Ohio border, and two (Detroit and Oakland) a short drive from Ohio.  From a cost efficiency standpoint, this is very important for us.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Barnes Reaches 300 win plateau
« on: January 22, 2022, 11:01:27 PM »
It should be noted that John Barnes won his 300th game this afternoon, 144 of them at YSU.  We now stand at 17-2, 11-1 in the league. (don't get me started on the disaster of last week's IUPUI final minute.)

The second half of the league schedule will be tough. Six of the final eight on the road, including contests in inhospitable venues like Milwaukee, Green Bay, CSU, and IUPUI.  But when you play tough defense on virtually every possession, you always have a chance.

Watched some of the game on tv, was impressed with the amount and type of seating until I saw the curtains behind the one basket. Ruined the good impressions I had. What were they thinking?

There are plenty of seats beyond that curtain.  That place holds about 13,000.  The basketball court used to be centered.  Then, many years ago, embarrassed by the fact that CSU has very few fans (even when they win) the school moved the basketball court to one edge and erected that absurd curtain.

Cleveland State is an abysmal athletic university.  No football, no track and field, no baseball, no fans at their women's basketball games, few fans at their men's basketball games. Every time our shortcomings disappoint you, just be grateful that you are not a CSU alumnus who is a sports fan.

Some are reacting like this list is comprehensive.  It only includes those who were able to enroll at YSU this spring. The entire recruiting class contains some players with good credentials.

Keep in mind that there is one additional recruiting season. After spring practice, players who feel trapped behind young talent on a depth chart often search for new homes. We would hope that our coaches have set aside a few scholarships for these guys.

Calhoun is an upgrade over Slocum.  No question about that. But something is really starting to bother me.  This is his fifth year, correct?  His original recruiting class was excellent.  He then brought in Quisenberry in his second class.  Then the recruits became less impressive with each passing year.  Should it not work the exact opposite way?

I was angry when I walked out of Beeghly last evening.  This morning I have a more realistic outlook.  We have no quality wins whatsoever. The only truly good team in the Horizon League blew us off the court in the first half. We could not even handle a mediocre league opponent on our own floor. We are an average team in one of the lowest-rated DI leagues. High expectations for this bunch is unreasonable.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: Murray State heading to the Missouri Valley
« on: January 07, 2022, 04:38:59 PM »
This is potentially very good news for us. I doubt that anybody wants to play more than 8 league games. So if the MVFC expanded to 12, how would you fairly decide which 8 teams a school played in a given year?  The only feasible way is by forming divisions. Six schools on each side of the Mississippi.

YSU, Indiana State, Illinois State, Western Illinois, Southern Illinois, Murray State

NDSU, SDSU, South Dakota, North Dakota, Northern Iowa, Missouri State

Each year you play the 5 teams from your own division and then 3 from the other.  Rotate the 3 after a 2-year cycle.

For reasons of geography and rivalries, the Dakota schools always play each other.  Likewise, the Illinois schools and Indiana State always play.  Murray would just be happy to be in a much better basketball conference.  YSU obviously would be pleased.

The two losers, UNI and Missouri State.  Who cares.

Chief, well no responses so far.  But some of us really appreciate the information that you provide about the football program.  Thanks and keep the info coming.

These games automatically start out as forfeits, but the league commissioner has the discretion to alter the result to a "no contest" if she feels that "extraordinary circumstances" caused the problems.  In reality, if your team is fully vaccinated, you seem to earn the break.  If you have players or staff who refuse vaccinations, you get the forfeit.  I seem to recall reading somewhere that a few Wright State players and even a coach had refused to get vaccinated. That would probably account for how the commissioner made the decision.

I swear there were segments of that game when it looked like two sixth grade teams were "attempting" to play basketball. Five road games with three wins, one loss, one Covid. Who would not have taken that result when we saw this unfair schedule? Now play well at home.  Eleven home games.  Just avoid any stupid losses to inferior teams in Youngstown.

13 days without a game will be difficult. Fortunately, we have UIC scheduled before IUPUI when we resume. That is assuming anybody is playing in two weeks.

The course of the season will be determined by Sunday evening.  If we are 4-2, we can contend for one of the top four spots (and a first round home game in the conference tournament.)  If we are 3-3 (or, gulp, 2-4) the season will yet again be all but lost.

That article was a bit deflating. Raising 1.5 million for something that is basketball-related will be hard.  At least the plan now calls for replacing the seats before building those stupid loges.
