YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: YSU VS OAKLAND
« on: January 14, 2023, 05:27:29 PM »
When have the men and women's team been really good at the same time? Never I'm a$$uming... lol.

You have to go back to the 1997-98 school year, the best sports year in YSU history!  That fall the football team won the fourth national championship.  In the winter, Peters' men advanced to the finals of the Mid-Continent tournament but lost to Valpo.  DeGregorio's women won the conference, regular season and tournament, and then beat Memphis in the NCAA tourney.

If the men can just dedicate themselves to playing defense for 40 minutes, they can surpass what Peters did in 1998 and what Rice did twice during the 1980s (before he ran out of Dom Rosselli's recruits.)

Phillips spent a considerable portion of his career in the field of education. Although everybody wants to be financially comfortable, educators have other priorities besides seeking maximum compensation.

This is turning into a rerun of a bad movie. Plenty of hype and then unfulfilled expectations. Sure we have gifted offensive players, but the bottom line is we are a team with a 2-2 record in a low major league and we can't defend anybody.

Phillips's early recruits are now posted on the university athletic site. Anybody have insight? Three star running back from Alliance and winner of best high school receiver award in West Virginia caught my attention.

Move to the MAC. Save tremendously on travel year in and year out. Actually compete for a conference championship. Generate excitement by establishing rivalries w/ Akron, KSU, etc.
Play two power 5 programs a year for additional money.

Hell, I'd come see YSU play Akron and Kent each year rather than Southern Illinois and Indiana St for crying out loud. I'd imagine others would as well. The FCS is a poor product. Get on board like everyone else and get to the FBS. Bull**** we cant do it. Don't tell me YSU cant join the MAC but UMa$$ can move up and now you have teams like Austin Peay, Dixie St (UT Tech),  and Tarleton St going FBS. Give me a break

I posted the financial figures on another thread. We would have to increase our athletic budget by 8.5 million to tie BG, the Ohio MAC school with the lowest budget.  To reach financial parity with schools like Akron, Ohio, and Toledo, we would have to DOUBLE our athletic budget. How exactly is that supposed to happen?  How is receiving 2 million more from big time football guarantees equal 8.5 or 15 million dollars?  Furthermore, do you know how many fans Ohio MAC schools draw? Nobody in this state cares about the MAC.  They just sit in front of their tvs and watch the professional team in Columbus.

There is nothing wrong with dreaming, until your dreams are shattered by the intrusion of reality. Here is the yearly athletic spending for the state universities with the exception of the professional operation in Columbus.  Latest data I could find was from the 2017-2018 academic year.  Numbers are in millions of dollars.

11.9 Wright State
13.7 Cleveland State
15.9 Youngstown State
24.4 Bowling Green
30.0 Kent State
33.8 Toledo
34.9 Akron
35.9 Ohio
37.1 Miami
64.8 Cincinnati

At this point i would rather have a bowl game in a warm climate than making the FCS playoffs.
Anyone agree.  Better money too

You do realize that these junk bowls require a school to agree to purchase x number of tickets before they issue their "invitation."  Northern G5 schools in which fans only buy a few hundred tickets to a meaningless game lose considerable amounts of money on these bowls. No matter; they are FBS!

UPMC was the driving force of the Duquesne renovation, they provided much of the money.

Which is why comparing the situation at Duquesne and at YSU makes no sense. We lack a corporate mega donor and wealthy individuals have little interest in basketball. Makes for a tough situation.

I will add something else.  Although the seating is outdated and terrible, there are features in Beeghly that are very positive that fans do not see.  Renovated locker rooms, state-of-the-art video room, that weight room that you can see at the corner of the west deck.

Do other schools have loges?

A handful of schools do.  For once in his life, I wish that Strollo would forget about the wealthy and their loges and provide quality, comfortable seating for the common folk.

Given financial realities, any improvements in Beeghly must come from private donations. To their credit, the big money people in the community raised over 100 million in the latest funding campaign.  All of that is going to academic oriented things, as it should. It has been difficult but possible to squeeze more donations for the media center and additional loges at the stadium. When was the last time that a rich person gave a substantial donation targeted for basketball?  Monus? Blame Strollo if you want, and I am certainly not his fan, but we lack a patron who places much value on basketball.

You usually win if you win the rebounding battle and I think they out rebounded by 10.  I feel sometimes this team forgets that Defense and Rebounding are keys to getting a W.

Calhoun is a vast improvement over Slocum. But he either does not know how to teach defense, or more likely, he is incapable of convincing his team to play defense. Until we exert maximum energy on the defensive side of the ball we will not contend in the Horizon League. It does not matter how many of our players excel at NBA style offensive moves.

ESPN+ is killing attendance for non-big time college sports events, just as over-the-air television cut Major League baseball attendance in half during the 1950s. For a modest yearly fee, casual fans sit in the comfort of their living rooms and watch a seemingly endless variety of games in HD on their smart tvs. Unfortunately, the days of 5,000 in Beeghly and 15,000 in Stambaugh are over.

178
We rarely play any DI teams in football or basketball with "name recognition" that casual fans might want to see. So scheduling Ohio University at home is great. But let us screw this up by playing on Sunday afternoon at precisely the time when the Browns are playing the Bengals and the Steelers are playing the Ravens.  Fortunately, both football teams stink, but 95% of casual fans will opt to watch one of those football games instead of coming to the campus.

I assumed that Ohio demanded this.  Perhaps they were in action on Thursday and did not want to play a road game on Saturday two days later.  Nope. This is finals week at OU and their basketball team has not played since last Saturday. Furthermore, they are playing at Florida next Wednesday so this Saturday would have worked even better for them.

We could have scheduled an attractive doubleheader for this Saturday evening.  But no, why do something that might promote the programs. I eagerly await some rational explanation for this monumental stupidity.

Somebody wins the Payton Award every year, but there is only one all-time NCAA rushing leader. With the modern emphasis upon throwing the ball all over the place, it is entirely possible that Jaleel's record will not be broken for a long, long time. As the years pass, having YSU associated with that record is going to be a great source of pride.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: Why they would choose us for the playoffs
« on: December 04, 2022, 07:06:06 PM »
Does anyone really think the MAC will ever even sniff a College Football Playoff 'conference championship' bid as one of the top 6 ranked conference championships?

Just win consistently and all these problems will sort themselves out!

Exactly.  This expansion of the FBS playoff system will harm the MAC, not help it. I'm quite sure that the big time powers will distribute any extra playoff money ONLY to the conferences that qualify for the tournament (namely 11 big time teams plus the one token, and that token will never be the MAC.)
