YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: Transfer Portal
« on: May 21, 2023, 05:18:34 PM »
He has 7 rebounds a game and 9 puts.   Calhoun likes the portal for sure.   Of our 11 newcomers I believe that only two or three are straight out of High School.  One being 7-3 and I believe that the one from Philly area is 6-8.  We are going overseas I hear in the summer .  Not sure where.
Once you start using using the portal, you have not choice but to keep using it, as it takes over your program. It certainly has taken over ours.

I agree. Calhoun has all but abandoned player development in exchange for instant winning. Enjoy this while you can.  When Calhoun leaves, whether for West Virginia or someplace else, what will be left behind for YSU basketball?  Probably not much.

Who will the conference target as a replacement?  Eastern Kentucky just left the OVC to join the A-Sun Conference in all sports.  I thought they were a better fit then Murray State but once the OVC started to crumble i'm sure they wanted to secure all sports.

My guess would be nobody.  Since the conference did not create divisions, there is not much need for another school. The MVC contingent within the MVFC orchestrated Murray State's addition for reasons of basketball. I guess my fear is that the Dakota schools will try to push St. Thomas out of Minnesota, the recently elevated DI member of the Summit League. That should be vetoed by all the MVC schools and by us.

This was a long overdue move that benefits financially-stressed Western Illinois tremendously. They reunite in a conference with their rival, Eastern Illinois. They can compete immediately in the remnant of OVC football. Most importantly, they escape the Summit League and will see their transportation costs greatly reduced.

For us, we will no longer have to endure their horrible television announcers and Mickey Mouse football game production.

Mid-major vs. #5 ranked big time power. Winning conference championships is our ultimate goal for every sport except for football (and bowling.)

Dump the Portal.

Philosophically, I agree with you. This portal has wrecked college sports as we have known them. College rosters now resemble those of minor league baseball teams: here today, gone tomorrow.

However, since this is the new reality and we can not change it, be grateful that Calhoun has mastered the new rules. Let's hope that his second batch of transfers can mesh together into a cohesive unit.  That is not guaranteed.

Games last over three hours because television timeouts are too frequent and too long. We will still have to endure those breaks and now get less action. Thanks NCAA.

Watching that performance the thing that struck me the most was the difference in overall talent from what Phillips inherited from Pelini and what he has assembled now.  Night and Day.

I agree that Brungard looked good as the scrimmage progressed. He can be a valuable weapon as a wildcat quarterback. But he is short. I can't see him as a full-time starter down the road. He would never see above the linemen while standing in the pocket.

Phillips' decision to keep the offensive line intact instead of breaking them up was wise. They got some valuable repetitions.

Young kickers looked very good.  For the most part punting was exceptional.

I was certainly encouraged by what I saw today.

According to a promo that I saw somewhere, admission will be free. The spring practice tv show is this evening at 7:00 so we might learn about the depth chart and what players have stood out.

Beeghly Center, the building, is still in excellent shape. It is the outdated, "high school" bleachers on both the top and bottom levels that make the facility look inadequate. Renovation should include the installation of permanent, theater seating on both the top and bottom levels. That would make Beeghly look fantastic.

When the gym was constructed in 1972, it had to have retractable seating.  We needed the floor space for all of our sports, phys. ed classes, and intramurals. That is certainly no longer the case.  We have the campus rec center for intramurals. We have that 100 yard long gym under the seats at Stambaugh for any type of phys. ed class. Time to convert Beeghly from a physical education center into a true arena.

Huggins won't be able to name his successor at West Virginia, but he will have significant influence in that decision. As others have suggested, Calhoun is positioning himself for his dream job, just as Tressel did. Good for us as he has enormous incentive to keep winning until Huggins steps aside.

The Iowa State athletic web site has Heacock listed as the DC at YSU from 1992-1996, then to Indiana from 97-99, and back to YSU as the DC for 2000.  That seems right to me.

Boston,

You should run the NCAA and impose this excellent system on the membership.  Every single school in America would benefit from your proposal. The days of FBS pretenders squandering millions in student fees in a forlorn attempt to be considered the equal of OSU, Alabama, or Notre Dame would mercifully come to an end.

I assume Exigent circumstances should include the lost of scholarship from the current school.
If that is true, we can only get players from the portal after they have completed 4 year of eligibility.
All others can only receiver waivers if they meet the exigent circumstances.
So, if we want to get players (from portal) who could play more than one year, they must receive waivers.
Am I on the right track?

Look again at the information that guinpen provided for us this morning. If a player from his original school wants to transfer to YSU, he could do so no matter how many years of eligibility he had remaining. Those "exigent circumstances" would only apply to a player who had previously transferred.

The transfer portal is the most radical change in the nature of college basketball since the beginning of the awarding of scholarships. Coaches that can navigate the new system (Calhoun) will thrive; coaches that are lost in this new process (that Green Bay guy who was fired during the season) will disappear. I don't like it but am glad our guy can function in this new world.

It should never be football versus basketball. The goal should be success in both so that fans are happy and coming to the campus often between September and March.

That said, stressing basketball is a dubious proposition in the Mahoning Valley. This area has long been recognized as a football-baseball region. About a month ago there was a survey circulating on the internet that listed Youngstown as producing the third most pro athletes all time on a per capita basis. I suspect that the methodology here was flawed but the data did tend to support the reputation of the region.  It suggested that Youngstown had turned out 72 pro football players, 32 major league baseball players, and just one NBA player.
