Samford coming from Birmingham Alabama to potentially play in snow ?
Interesting
-
winner plays @ #3 seed Jacksonville State.
-
Rematch from semifinal back in 1991!! Same weather would be nice!
-
The clowns on Wkbn 570 haven't figured out if the game is home or away. They led off the sports program as JFK advances in playoffs. Jim Evans needs to go. He was not prepared this morning .
-
PLAYOFFS ARE BACK IN YOUNGSTOWN!!!
-
FIRED UP! Can't wait for Saturday!! Getting the old feeling back!!
-
Well... 2 things ...
1. We have the best draw in school history.
2. this is an inexperienced team. This is where you really want Jim Tressel to cross the line just a bit.
It is a new world. All teams are in for a reason ... right now we focus on Samford and NOTHING else. Let's do it.
All of this being said:
Buckeye fans be damned! I expect 20,630 fans to fill that stadium with another 5k "forced" to stay and party in the lots!! Get everyone in for Turkey day and they cannot travel back home until after the game.
-
Note that free student tickets are limited to 500 for this game ...interesting.
-
refresh my memory, how much do universities have to pay to host playoffs games again ? this might be why the free ticket limit

I recall $30k but may be mistaken.

I think we match up well. Samford first in SoCon in passing offense but last in rushing offense. Next to last rushing D. Looks like their offense centered around QB Devlin Hodges and WR Karel Hamilton. Both lead most offensive SoCon categories.

SAMFORD is 2nd to last in the SOCON Rushing Defense with opponents averaging over 200 yards per game... YSU controls clock with ground game and brings the pressure on D. Should be the formula for victory...

I can deal with Samford but JSU.... Yikes.

I can deal with Samford but JSU.... Yikes.
If you want to be the best, you have to beat the best. JSU is tough, but remember what conference we play in and remember the last time a powerful JSU team matched up with a MVFC team.
However, how about we BEAT SAMFORD first...
Go Guins!

Well said Valley

Snow Blizzard saturday anyone ?

Jacksonville State is like looking in a mirror....top OVC defense, top rushing offense, last in passing offense. Like YSU...they've only allowed 4 rushing TDs. Spooky. Their offense did get 368 yards on LSU, so they don't completely suck.

We had 405 on a West Virginia squad, that until last night, looked pretty damn good too.

Thanks for sharing..I'm not very familiar with the O.V.C..But those are some very good defensive Stats know matter how you look at it..I just wonder what kind of offensive lines they are playing against

Snow Blizzard saturday anyone ?
Forecast calls for temps in low 40s, rain early in the day w/ 10% chance at gametime, ~10 MPH winds.
Cold for someone used to Birmingham weather.

Congrats to the Penguins from a Jacksonville State fan, and welcome back to the playoffs. Best of luck to your team next weekend with Samford. I'd love to see the Bulldogs at our place again in the second round as there's a lot of history between our programs, but I'd be just as pleased to witness the first-ever meeting between the Gamecocks and the Penguins. So, I'm officially neutral.
Should your guys prevail, lots of fans over at gojaxstate.com (http://www.gojaxstate.com) would be happy to provide pointers on travel, accommodations, etc.

Congrats to the Gamecocks. It'd be great to see two of the top FCS defenses square off, including two of the top three sack leaders.

Snow Blizzard saturday anyone ?
Just booked my flight. There better not be a blizzard.
Go Guins
-
They just lost to a sub-par ETSU team on the road. I'm liking this matchup
-
I hope we have a large crowd, I looked up the size of their stadium and it compares to Niles Red Dragon Stadium.
I remember the last time YSU played them here in the playoffs, Samford had no cold weather gear. Those kids froze the entire game.
-
Looking at the schedule of Samford - they beat playoff teams - Central Arkansas, Wofford, Lost to the Citadel by 3, Chattanooga by a touchdown, put 41 up against Miss. State. QB has 33 TD passes and a receiver with 100 catches. Our weakness is pass defense so they are scary in that department. This reminds a little of Alcorn State game.

Regardless of the crowd size, which i hope is 10-12k butts in the seats, the most important thing is that we have a playoff environment on Saturday. I remember the JMU game in 2006 and the fans were loud and into it the entire game and many stood up on 3rd down. I hope we have that sort of environment on Saturday. If we do, I have no doubt our team will respond and we can get the W.
Will be a challenge for sure against this Samford squad.

Snow Blizzard saturday anyone ?
NO. I understand the southern team, but if we need snow to beat Samford at home then we probably should lose, and I'm getting far to old for terrible weather games. (don't worry, I'll be there regardless!)
-
Here is a response I received from a Citadel fan.
Samford has been pathetic at the run. They got it going a bit in a couple games including against us when Hodges took off with his feet (something he hasn't done much), but it was still under 100 yards in the game, total. They have run ok against weak run defenses but any kind of good D and they have issues. Passing on the other hand. They throw so many quick flat passes, that they are really just glorified running plays. Expect him to complete 40-50 against you. He doesn't throw interceptions very much. He has multiple good targets to choose from. He gets it off so fast sometimes that you will have issues getting sacks. And he always has the deep ball. It will be a good game. I would not let their loss this past week give you a false sense of security. Everyone has an off game. Unfortunately for them, they just had theirs when ETSU had a great game....AGS.
Take it for what it's worth. these quick little passes has been a thorn in the side of our "D".
-
Take it for what it's worth. these quick little passes has been a thorn in the side of our "D".
Quick little passes are tough on EVERY defense. That was the basis of the West Coast offense, and also the spread offense. Negates pass rush. Will be tough task to stop this team. Flip side is they are going to have real issues stopping us.
-
Just as a kind of side note: We finished #1 in the nation in sacks. #1 in TD's allowed rushing.
That is 2 very good stats to lead in. Not sure if is an official stat, but we rushed for 2866 and allowed 1157 for a difference of 1709 which has to be something close to a team record.
Samford game should be real show of opposing forces:
Rushing Offense:
YSU #7 rushing for 2866
Sam #110 rushing for 1157
Rushing Defense:
YSU # 11 allowing 1137
Sam # 99 allowing 2248
Passing Offense:
YSU #105 passing for 1738
Sam #3 passing for 3821 (yes kids, that's 189 more yards per game for Samford)
Passing Defense:
YSU #22 allowing 2048
Sam #57 allowing 2369
Whoever said this might be like the Alcorn State game might be on to something here!
-
Game film request by Bo should be for the ETSU game. They held the ball for 43 minutes ??? ETSU is the worst team in the SOCON!?!
-
Gonna be a battle that's for sure.

Fever "If anyone could come back from this type of injury Trent could. Most quarterbacks never do and their throwing motion is cut down in half. .Best of luck to this young man"
I never heard of this? I alwasy thought collarbones healed are fine. Note the quote from http://www.emedicinehealth.com/ below:
Many broken collarbones heal on their own. If you don't need surgery, you will use a sling to keep your arm and shoulder from moving while the bone heals. An adult wears a sling for a few days or up to a week. A child may need one for 3 to 4 weeks.
You can begin simple exercises immediately and move on to strengthening exercises when they don't cause pain. Ask your doctor when it is safe to begin to exercise. If you start too soon, the broken collarbone may not heal well. If you are active, do not play sports or other activities until you can move your shoulder easily and it feels strong.
To help relieve pain, try acetaminophen or a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, such as ibuprofen or naproxen.
Surgery may be recommended for severe breaks. When the ends of the broken bone do not line up with each other (displaced), surgery is more likely. Many experts believe surgery is especially important in young, active people.
After surgery, you will use a sling for up to 6 weeks. Your doctor or physical therapist will teach you gentle exercises to keep your shoulder moving for about 6 weeks, until you can start exercises to get your strength back. Most people have returned to all their activities by 3 months after surgery.
-
Trent's injury was very severe Go. Multiple fractures and shattered if you will. The good thing for him is he short arm's the ball in the first place
-

As I read a bunch of stuff on-line (it's on the internet, so it must be true!) once the bone heals it's healed. I can find no examples of QB's with broken collarbones, regardless of severity, that didn't come back to full mobility. I just think you were being a bit melodramatic. Frankly it doesn’t seem very important as he isn’t going to make a living playing football, and at this point is #3 behind Hunter and Ricky. Kid better use the time in class.

The online version doesn't show how much ink YSU got in this morning's Naples Daily News. It's the majority of space above the fold, with a big pic of Bishop tackling a MSU receiver. Very nice article:

Nice article. Didn't know why Naples would know or care what YSU was doing, but Bishop's home town. Good for him. Hope he is healthy for playoffs.

Yep, but asking Bo a question regarding substantive facts is very often not rewarded with a candid answer! Wish we had college betting so they would have to issue honest injury reports!

YSU minus 8.5. O/U 50.5
My 0.02......YSU covers and stay away from the O/U. YSU's run game won't stop with MSU.
Massey predicts a score of 28-20 and gives YSU a 75% chance of winning.
Largest spread of first round: Chatty minus 15 vs Weber State
Other MVFC: ISUr minus 1.5 versus Central Arkansas.....interesting that the team that doesn't belong is favored. :D

Wonder what kind of crowd, if any, Samford will bring ???

I really liked the Hosick interview! Nice to hear a kid talk about using the time to heal mentally, physically, and spiritually. Seems like a very good kid. Hope he comes back next year and is able to help the team somehow. As for Samford, I will be there with my wife and two little ones. Going to cheer loudly and help support our home field advantage. #goguins

Got my tickets yesterday. I will be going with my 2 sons from out of town. We used to go to all YSU home games and playoff home games when they were growing up. We all remember the game against Nova when Goode made the fourth down catch and Wilkins nailed the field goal into the wind.
Go Penguins.

There were the three famous 4th-down catches, I forget who was involved in two of these if anyone remembers:
1) in the 1997 title game that toss for the games only TD by Tidwell to Ray.
2) I think it against Marshall (but could have been Nova), where the 4th-down pass was caught about the 10. I remember he was completely extended and we thought he would land out of bounds. I was standing less than 10-yards away and I held my breath that it did not touch the ground.
3) The 4th-down toss that bounced of off 2 and was caught.
Can someone refresh me on 2 & 3? Stick or ET?
-
Samford fans seem to think if their offense is clicking, we will be in for a long game.
-
We should concede that Samford's receivers are good and fast. But Samford fans might be shocked with the toughness and lateral movement of our defense. They might also be surprised with how difficult it will be for their receivers to gain much YAC on their short pass routes. As always, this game will be determined by play in the trenches. I expect that our linemen will have the advantage on both sides of the ball.
-
Give them all they want between the 20's and when it gets tighter and the routes are longer - send the house! Hodges gets hit a couple of times by 9 and 11 - he will get gun shy.

Fan, sorry, I could not remember 2 & 3. I remembered the catch and Wilkin's kick against Nova because I was there. I still recall their QB was chasing the ref around the field after the kick arguing that there was still time left on the clock while the YSU fans were charging on to the field.

Thanks ET I know that the Williams catch is one of them. One was tipped and I am pretty certain it was Ray Issac that threw it.
-
Another great 4th qtr catch against Marshall was Ray Isaac's pass to Trent Boykin for 55 yds; it was an over the shoulder catch with double coverage. There was Herb Williams fantastic 33 yd catch in the end zone.
Thru the Tressel years there were many great catches in the play off games; Mark Brungard threw a 39 yd pass to Don Zwisher against Idaho to set up a touchdown run by Tamron Smith.
I have nearly all of YSU's championship and playoff games on VCR.

Just finished watching their overtime loss to the Citadel. They have speed and athleticism across the board and they are a good football team. Citadel had success with the triple option and getting their backs in space. I think we have the players to play man coverage aginst them. That along with a strong pass rush could make it very difficult for their Qb. I'm still thinking our best defense will be long sustained drives by our offense to give our defense the rest they will need to continually defend the pass. Carl needs to dial up a great game plan and I think he will. My pick 27-13 YSU

If the topic of the YSU game comes up today at your dinner, encourage everyone there to attend Saturday's game. There is definite enthusiasm for this game, but ultimately it doesn't matter if those people who are enthusiast choose to stay at home.

I actually went with my girlfriend on Tuesday to get her student ticket (she's going to the game even though I can't). And they were no where near the 500 free student ticket number. The ticket office guy said that the game won't be a sellout, but they were expecting a decent crowd and they were going to make the money back from the bid and still have a profit. I don't know how much the bid cost, but if someone knows you can guess how many tickets sold from figuring a bit above the cost of the bid.

FWIW: Ted Schmidt from PNC, who is sponsoring the 500 student tix, said Wednesday night on Penguin Gameday more than 400 of the 500 student tix were taken and they expected the remainder to be claimed.
In regards to the crowd itself, don't get me going. All I ask is that the people who do go make noise from start til finish. Also standing on third down is completely appropriate :)

3800? Good lord. Those kids deserve better.
Has the local media been hyping it up?

IMHO we can only HOPE for 12k. Anything more than that would be icing on the cake. But lets get real...anything within 5k of a sell out is just not going to happen. And, unfortunately, media hype is
not going to make much of a difference.
I dont care...we will be there, as always. And my 11 year would rather be tailgating and watching live rather than at the neighborhood buckeye party.
GO!!! GUINS!!!!

Completely agree, this game is about time of possession. I wouldn't be surprised to see even higher scoring among both teams.

I'm happy to say I will be one of however many fans show up. I know for a fact that all the players and coaches appreciate the fans that do come. After every home win this year I got a handshake along the sidelines and a sincere thank you from every player on the squad. I've heard that the team has had great preparation for the game and is ready to go. On a side note it was reported in the Vindicator that Avery is not expected to start..So let's get behind whoever is playing today and cheer the Guins on to victory so we can get to round 2 and J.S.U.

I heard 6,500 seats remaining, not sold. I possibly heard it backwards, but I don't think so.

You heard it backwards from everyone I talked to. I wish you were right.

6,500 sold. Sad but true.
