Hundelt Named Volleyball's Team MVP at Awards Banquet

Missy Hundelt was named the Most Valuable Player of the Youngstown State volleyball team as the program held its awards banquet on Saturday at the conclusion of the spring season.

Hundelt was unanimously voted MVP by her teammates, and she was also named the Penguins’ Best Offensive Player for 2012. The junior was an All-Horizon League selection after leading YSU in kills, attempts and points while ranking second in aces and digs.

Other special award winners included Best Defensive Player Erika West, Most Improved Player Becca Calvin and Rookie of the Year Aly Ryan. Ryan was also recognized for earning a 4.0 grade-point average in the fall semester, and Shannon Watson earned praise for having the team’s highest cumulative GPA.

The successes of the 2012 team were celebrated throughout the event. The Penguins had their best record since 1999 at 15-14 and earned a berth in the Horizon League Tournament for the first time since 2008.

Team Accomplishments:

 

• The Penguins posted their best record in 13 years, finishing 15-14 overall and 5-9 in Horizon League play.
• YSU won more matches in 2012 than in its previous three seasons combined.
• YSU improved its RPI by 99 spots from 2011 to 2012, which was the 15h-best improvement in the country.
• Youngstown State had 10 more wins in 2012 than in 2011, which was the 10th-best win improvement in the country
• The Penguins won the Coppin State Invitational and finished as the runners-up in tournaments at Akron and UNC Greensboro.
• YSU ranked second in the Horizon League in hitting percentage (.212), blocks per set (2.21) and aces per set (1.17).

Individual Accomplishments:

• Jenna Cavanaugh led the Horizon League with 1.23 blocks per set, and her 13 school-record blocks versus UIC on Sept. 28 were the second-most by a conference player this season.
• Cavanaugh ranked 58th in the country in blocks per set.
• Cavanaugh’s 1.23 blocks per set was the sixth-best average in school history for a season, and her 105 block assists were the 10th-most in school history. Cavanaugh’s 124 total blocks were the 10th-most for a season in school history.
• Cavanaugh’s 1.03 blocks per set over her career currently ranks as the fourth-best mark in YSU history. Cavanaugh also ranks 11th in career block assists and 15th in career total blocks.
• Cavanaugh was named the Horizon League Defensive Player of the Week on Aug. 27.
• Casey D’Ambrose ranked seventh in the Horizon League with 6.57 assists per set.
• D’Ambrose has 1,699 assists heading into her senior year and ranks seventh on YSU’s career list.
• Alexis Egler registered seven double-doubles, ranking 14th in the Horizon League.
• Egler was named the Horizon League Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 29, 2012.
• Missy Hundelt was named All-Horizon League, the first Penguin to do so since Ruth Boscaljon in 2009. Hundelt, Boscaljon and Fraley are YSU’s three All-Horizon League honorees since 2001.
• Hundelt ranked fourth in the conference in kills per set, and her 14 double-doubles tied for fifth.
• Hundelt’s 369 kills were the eighth-most for a single season in school history, and her 3.60 kills per set was the ninth-best mark in YSU history.
• Hundelt was named the Horizon League Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 10 and Oct. 15, 2012.
• Through her junior year, Hundelt ranks 12th in YSU’s record book with 923 career kills. Her 3.15 kills per set is the fourth-best average in school history.
• Erin Muir ranked 10th in the conference with 4.93 assists per set.
• Aly Ryan ranked 10th in the conference with 0.86 blocks per set.
• Nikki Thompson ranked fifth in the Horizon League with 0.26 aces per set.
• Erika West was eighth in the Horizon league with 3.71 digs per set. That was also the 12th-best mark in school history.
• West’s 404 digs were the eighth-most in a season in school history.
• West’s 3.38 digs per set currently over her career ranks fourth-best in the YSU record book.
