Penguins Wrap Up Home Slate With Win Over Valparaiso

The Youngstown State women's tennis team concluded a successful home season with a 7-0 victory over Valparaiso on Saturday afternoon at the YSU Tennis Courts. The Penguins went 6-1 at home this season.

Saturday's match was played outdoors and the competitors battled chilly conditions. The Penguins sent senior Lauren Hankle out on a good note as she won in singles and doubles on Senior Day.

With the win, YSU improved to 13-9 overall and 4-2 in the Horizon League. Valparaiso falls to 1-18 and 0-5.

YSU cruised in doubles play winning 8-2 at No. 1, 8-0 at No. 2 and 8-1 at No. 3.

In singles play, the Penguins were victorious in straight sets in all six matches.

At No. 1, Paula de Man defeated Kristin Zakiewicz 6-4, 6-0 to improve to 20-1 on the season. At No. 2, Margarita Sadovnikova beat Kaitlyn Hamel 6-1, 6-3 for her 20th win of the campaign. At No. 3, Marta Burak cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Michele Fredlake for her school-record 25th win of the campaign.

Hankle closed out her home career with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Megan Barthels at No. 4 singles. It was Hankle's 11th win of the year.

At No. 5 singles, Annina Brendel won 6-0, 6-2 over Angelina Goheen while Tijana Raicevic defeated Lauren Kammerer 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6.

The Penguins conclude the regular season at Wright State next Saturday.
