The Youngstown State women's soccer team (2-8-1, 0-1 Horizon League) returns home to play the first Horizon League home game at Farmers National Bank Field when it hosts Green Bay, Saturday, Oct. 5, at 1 p.m.
The Penguins are coming off 1-0 loss to Wright State on Sept. 28 in the Horizon League opener for both schools. The Penguins defeated Cedarville, 2-1, on Sept. 24 at Farmers National Bank Field.
About Green Bay
The Phoenix enter the game with an overall mark of 4-3-4 and a 1-0 record in Horizon League play. The Phoenix, who are 0-2-3 on the road, defeated Oakland, 2-0, on Sept. 27. The Phoenix tied Loyola, 0-0, on Sept. 29. Leading Phoenix is Heidi Hartman and Hekla Palmaddottir, who each have two goals and three assists. Hannah Kernen is also tied for the team lead with two goals. Goalkeeper Nastacia Behle has three shutouts and a team-high 23 saves. Behle and Katy Pilarzyk each have two wins in the net.
The Green Bay Series
This is the 15th meeting between Youngstown State and Green Bay in a series that dates back to 1998. The Phoenix owns a 10-2-2 advantage in the all-time series and defeated the Penguins in overtime last season, 2-1. The last Youngstown State victory came in 2010 when the Penguins won, 1-0, at Stambaugh Stadium. The Penguins and Phoenix tied, 0-0, in 2011.
Ludwig In the Top 10
Senior Allison Ludwig has been one of the top offensive players in school history. Ludwig currently ranks sixth all-time with 11 goals and seventh with 25 total points. With 10 shots in 2013, Ludwig has moved into sixth place with 92 career shots.
Podolsky Owns GAA Mark, Now Third in Wins
With the Penguins 2-1 win over Cedarville on Sept. 24, junior goalkeeper Jackie Podolsky moved into sole possession of third place on the YSU all-time wins list wth seven. Podolsky also owns the school record with a career 1.21 goals-against average.
Spread Out Scoring
The Penguins have scored seven goals this season by six different players. Senior defender Brittany Dowd leads the team with two goals while Cara Armstrong, Katie Hohmann, Chelsey Haney, Rachel Hutton and Nicolette Merlo have each scored once. Hohman and sophomore Karlee Kline each have two assists on the season.
