Penguins Tied For Third at HL Championships After Day One

The Penguins are tied for third with Valparaiso, nine shots off the pace set by co-leaders Detroit and Cleveland State. Loyola sits fifth at 327, Green Bay is sixth at 331 and UIC is seventh at 338.
Allison Mitzel is tied for fourth place following an opening round 77. Sarah Heimlich sits in eighth place with an 80, Sana Khan fired an 81 and is 16th, Aislynn Merling had an and is tied for 21st while Emily Rohanna is 25th with an 84.
Mitzel had two birdies and 10 pars to offset a double bogey and five bogeys for her five-over-par total. She birdied No. 5 and No. 18, both par fives. She had a solid final 10 holes going two-over-par during that stretch.
Heimlich had a birdie and nine pars during her opening round. She was three-over-par for the back nine and was even her last six holes, which inclulded a birdie on 16.
Khan's opening round 81 featured a birdie, eight pars, eight bogeys and a double bogey, Khan birdied the par-3 11th hole. On her front nine, she was four over par.
Merling also had birdie and nine pars, but was hurt by two double bogeys and a triple bogey in her opening round. She was one over-par the final five holes. After the first nine, she was five-over par.
Rohanna was four-over par on the back nine after going eight over on the front side. She had a string of five straight pars on the final nine holes before finishing the last three holes at three-over par.
The second round of three-day tournament begins early Saturday morning.
