Penguins Finish in Second at HL Indoor Track and Field Championships

The Youngstown State men's track and field team fell just short in a suspenseful back-and-forth battle with rival Milwaukee on Sunday that came down to the last event in final day at the Horizon League Indoor Track and Field Championships at the WATTS.

Entering the final individual running event of the competition, the Penguins trailed the Panthers by 21 points. But the Guins picked up 22 points in the 3,000-meter run. Austin McLean took his second HL title of the meet with a time of 8:19.98. Coming in second was Eric Rupe with a time of 8:21.55 and fourth was Ryan Sullivan with a time of 8:24.13.

The YSU men took a 152-151 lead over the Panthers into the 4x400-meter relay. Milwaukee won the event while the Penguins were fifth. UWM claimed its second straight narrow victory over YSU by a 161-154 margin. Behind the top two teams were UIC which had 61 points, Valparaiso finished with 59, Oakland had 58 and Detroit with 34 points.

For the Penguins, McLean and Carl Zallow both won titles in their two events on Sunday.

McLean's first HL title was in the 1-mile run as he showed his speed with a time of 4:11.16. He won the first and last individual men's final of the day claiming the 3,000-run crown.

Zallow, Marcellus Embry and Jaylon Brown took a 1-2-3 finish in the 60-meter dash. Zallow took the title with a time of 6.89 seconds, Embry was runner-up with a time of 6.97 seconds and Brown took third by finishing with a time of 6.98 seconds.

Zallow and Embry both came up on top again in the 200-meter dash. Zallow won his second HL title of the afternoon with a time of 21.74 seconds, while Embry took second with a score of 21.84. Embry had the fastest time in the first section while Zallow fought off his rivals in the second section.

Arnaldo Morales and Jay Jakovina both competed in the men's high jump. Morales placed second by clearing the bar at 2.11 meters and Jakovina came in fifth at 2.00 meters. Fillian Lee took fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 13.51 meters.

In the men's shot put, Ryan Booth placed second with a toss of 16.91 meters. Jacob Chiclowe took third in the event with a toss of 16.91 meters and Connor Neu placed sixth with a throw of 14.86 meters.

Freshman Caleb Lloyd and senior Clay Febus helped the Penguins in the 60-meter hurdles. Lloyd took third with a time of 8.26 seconds and Febus placed fourth by finishing with a score of 8.36.

The Penguins cleaned up earning some impressive individual honors. Zallow was named the Track Freshman of the Year, Booth was named the Field Freshman of the Year, Neu shared the award for the Most Outstanding Field Performer and McLean shared the most scored points award and named the Horizon League Men's Athlete of the Year for his season-long success.
