Penguins Step Up to Win Four Field Titles; Steeplechase Crown

John Seaver (shot put), Jay Jakovina (high jump), Ashley Wagner (high jump) and Allison Roth (shot put) all earned league titles in field events on Saturday.
The team race on the women's side is up for grabs with four teams within eight points. Milwaukee has 55 points, YSU is right behind at 54.5, Wright State has 48 and Loyola has 47. For the men, the Penguins are third with 48 points. Milwaukee has a strong lead with 97 points while Loyola is second with 52 and Detroit sits fourth at 40.
Jakovina, a freshman, took home the high jump crown clearing a height of 2.07 meters. Jakovina also won the event at the indoor league meet in February.
Seaver won the shot put with a toss of 17.47 meters as YSU went first, second and fourth. Finishing second was Jacob Chiclowe with a toss of 15.13 meters while Eric Vendemia finished fourth at 14.62 meters.
Wagner, a freshman who redshirted during the indoor campaign, won the high jump clearing the bar at 1.64 meters. She was the lone jumper to clear that height.
Roth defended her Horizon League shot put title with a heave of 14.30 meters while freshman Jennifer Neider was second at 14.06 meters.
Stockmaster gave the Penguins their third consecutive title in the steeplechase holding on for a two-second win. Stockmaster posted a time of 11:09.78 to win just ahead of second-place finisher Rachel Janson of Wright State (11:11.54). YSU redshirt Samantha Hamilton was the outdoor champion in 2011 and 2012.
In the 200-meter dash, YSU qualified four to the finals in for the first time in school history on the women's side. Ciara Jarrett had the best time at 24.07 seconds in qualifying while Grambling was third at 24.38 seconds. The Penguins will be well represented in the final as Alteekva Vanwright was seventh (24.96 seconds) and Washington was eighth (25.01 seconds).
Senior Nicole Pachol had the top qualifying time in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:00.81 seconds. Jen Shiley had the fifth-best time at 1:03.94.
Laura Kosiorek qualified first in the 100m hurdles at 14.16 seconds and Homan was third among qualifiers at 14.21 seconds. Vanwright qualified fourth in the 400m with a time of 57.54 seconds.
Nina Grambling had the top qualfying time in the 100m dash with a time of 11.77 seconds while Jarrett was second at 11.94 seconds. Alexis Washington was seventh with a time of 12.19 seconds.
For the men, Michael Davis posted the third qualifying time in the 100m dash at 10.68 seconds while Tarelle Irwin was fifth at 10.76 seconds. In the 200m, the Penguin duo had the fifth and sixth-best times. Irwin qualified fifth at 21.67 seconds while Davis posted a time of 21.79 seconds.
Clay Febus qualified fifth in the 400m hurdles with a time of 55.31 seconds and was seventh for the 100m high hurdles with a time of 15.13 seconds.
Ciara Jarrett was third in the long jump with a leap of 5.72 meters while Kendall Homan was sixth at 5.62 meters. Hannah Ropp was fifth in the pole vault at 3.30 meters. Leanna Hartsough was fifth in the high jump clearing the bar at 1.58 meters. Kevin McCulloh was sixth in the javelin with a toss of 48.96 seconds.
The final day of action starts tomorrow at 10 a.m. with the discus and triple jump. The running events start at 11 a.m. with the 4x100-meter relays.
