YSU Stays Perfect in League Play With Over Cleveland State
Remi Chancerel
Youngstown - The Youngstown State men's tennis team used the momentum of winning the doubles point to pick up a key 4-3 Horizon League win over Cleveland State on Saturday at the Boardman Tennis Center.

The Penguins (7-9 overall and 3-0 in the Horizon League) won the clinching match in doubles in a tiebreaker to earn the point. Then the Guins went on to take the 4-3 decision by winning three singles matches behind Remi Chancerel at No. 1, Dawoud Kabli at No. 5 and Victor Peirera at No. 6.

In doubles, Cleveland State won at No. 1 by a 6-4 score before Chancerel and Silviu Mistreanu picked up a 6-4 win at No. 2. Then at No. 3, Hugo Morth and Bassem El Mekawi won 7-6 (5) to give the Guins the 1-0 advantage heading into singles play.

In singles, Chancerel won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1, Kabli had a strong performance to earn a 6-3, 6-2 victory and Pereira won by a 6-3, 6-4 score at No. 6. At No. 4, Mistreanu dropped a three-set decision after winning the opening set.

Head Coach Mickael Sopel said a victory over Cleveland State is a big step for the program.

"We played really hard and stayed focused throughout the match against a great team," Sopel said. "Taking care of doubles was huge for us. It's great to see the team play better in pressure situations. That helped in singles and allowed us to play relaxed and get a big conference win."

The Penguins return to action next Saturday when they visit Marquette.
