Penguins Win Eight Events in Season-Opening Dual vs. Duquesne
The Youngstown State swimming and diving team had eight individual event winners and big contributions from its freshmen as the Penguins opened the 2018-19 season Saturday against Duquesne. The Dukes narrowly won the dual 156-144 at Beeghly Natatorium.
Sophomore Aida Jurinovics won three events, and Tiphaine Saint-Gilles took first in two events. Junior Taylor Bishop, freshman Hannah Olger and freshman Tess Weiskopf each won one event. YSU's freshmen also earned a pair of second-place finishes and six third-place finishes.
Youngstown State closed the gap with Duquesne from 2017-18 when the Dukes won 168-125.
Jurinovics first victory came in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:07.24, and she followed that up with wins in the 100 fly (59.16) and the 200 IM (2:10.68). Saint-Gilles was first to the wall in both breaststroke events, winning the 100 in 1:07.29 and the 200 in 2:24.71. Taylor Bishop won the 200 free (1:57.18), Hannah Olger won the 50 free (24.66) and Tess Weiskopf won in 1-meter diving (242.55).
Weiskopf took second on the 3-meter board, and Bishop (500 free), Josie Preski (1,000 free) Sydney Gonzalez (200 free), Zsani Csado (200 fly), Casey Prentice (50 free) also had second-place finishes. Mallory Pitstick earned a pair of third-place finishes in the breaststroke events, and Preski, Gonzalez, Elizabeth Wompey, Allyson Wilson and Kayla Wrasman were also third in events.
Youngstown State will host Oakland in a Horizon League dual on Friday at 4 p.m.
