Ashley Dow Repeats at Horizon League Champion in 100 Back
Chicago, Ill. - Sophomore Ashley Dow repeated as the Horizon League Champion in the 100-yard backstroke on Friday night at the UIC Flames Natatorium. Dow finished with a time of 54.40 seconds, a school and conference record.
The Penguins had a strong day on Friday as the overall team race became up for grabs. After scoring 124 points the first two days, YSU exploded for 138 points on Friday.
Dow's performance was the highlight of the evening for the Guins. In the morning session she eclipsed her own Horizon League record with a time of 54.44 seconds. In the finals, she cruised to victory by 1.29 seconds in front of UIC's Anne Jacobsen while the third-place finisher clocked a time that was 2.14 seconds slower than Dow's pace.
She is the first swimmer in school history to win two Horizon League titles, win multiple titles in the same event as well as defend a swimming conference championship.
Roberts began the night with a sixth-place finish in the 400 IM with a time of 4:36.39 while Megan Ciampa earned a 10th-place finish with a time of 4:34.67 and Hanna Martin came in 14th at 4:41.64.
Paz added an eighth-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 58.99 seconds as Jana Janson picked up a 13th-place finish clocking in at 59.16 in the finals. Paz had a career-best time of 58.03 in the prelims.
Roberts had her second strong performance of the evening placing fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:04.96. Fellow senior Liseli Baich earned a 12th-place showing producing a time of 1:07.46.
Dow then followed with her victory while Chelsea Malone was 15th in the 100 back with a time of 1:00.72.
The divers kept the momentum going with a strong showing in the 1-meter dive. Freshman Bec Stafford finished second scoring 287.30 while senior Casey Hill was third with 275.70 points. It was the final collegiate event in Hill's career.
To conclude the night, the Guins posted a time of 7:47.33 in the 800-yard freestyle relay.
The final day of action at the Horizon League Championships begins at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday.
