Canfield, Ohio -- Cleveland State used a four-run seventh inning in game one and a five-run sixth in game two en route to a doubleheader sweep of the Youngstown State softball team, Saturday, at McCune Park.
The Penguins fall to 8-16 overall and 3-5 in the Horizon League while the Vikings improve to 12-17 overall and 3-2 in the league.
In the first game, the Penguins, who left 10 runners on base, scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 3-1 lead.
The score remained the same until the top of the seventh when Cleveland State, who had just two bunt singles off of Casey Crozier, scored four runs to take a 5-3 lead. Dara Toman led off the frame with a solo home run and Janessa Rivera-Keahi's two-out single to left plated two more. Keahi later scored on a throwing error.
Senior Vicky Rumph, who went 4-for-8 with two home runs and four RBIs on the day, belted a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the seventh and get the Penguins within one, 5-4. Sarah Gabel's two out single put the tying run on base and the winning run at the plate, but the Penguins could not convert.
Crozier, who struck out seven, had a no-hitter through 4.1 innings before a bunt single in the top of the fifth.
In the nightcap, Cleveland State scored three in the top of the first and led 6-0 after three-and-a-half innings, before Sarah Ingalls, who had two hits in each game, singled home Rumph and freshman Kelly Stowe to cut the lead to 6-2.
Sophomores Brooke Meenachan and Samantha Troxell each singled and senior Caroline Krombach walked to load the bases with no outs in the bottom of the fifth. Samantha Snodgrass' fielder's choice scored Meenachan, and Rumph tied the game with a three-run home run to left-center field.
The Vikings though added five more in the top of the sixth inning to seal the 11-6 victory.
