Softball Drops Pair on Day One at Phyllis Rafter Memorial
Kennesaw, Ga. -- The Youngstown State softball team dropped its first two games of the 2013 season with a 9-7 loss to Campbell and a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Bowling Green at the Phyllis Rafter Memorial Tournament.
The Penguins fell behind Campbell 7-0 after two innings, but rallied with two runs in the third and five in the fourth to tie the game at 7-7.
Campbell though scored two more in the top of the fifth and held off the Penguins the rest of the way for the 9-7 win.
Senior Vicky Rumph belted a two-run home run in the top of the third to cut the deficit to 7-2.
Freshman Miranda Castiglione, who had two hits, had a run-scoring single and senior Caroline Krombach drove in a run on a ground out to cut the Campbell lead down to 7-4.
Castiglione then scored on a wild pitch and junior Samantha Snodgrass laced a two-out, two-run double to tie the game at 7-7.
In the second game against Bowling Green, junior Casey Crozier struck out six and gave up just four hits and allowed just one run, but was the hard-luck loser.
The Penguins could muster only four hits and failed to get a run across the plate.
The Penguins (0-2) face Jacksonville State, Sunday, Feb. 24, at Noon.
