Penguins Show Improvement During Second Round at HL Championships

Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. - The Youngstown State men's golf team carded a 309 on Saturday at the Mission Inn Resort during the second day of action at the Horizon League Championships and sits in sixth place with a two-round total of 621.

In the team race, Valparaiso had the lowest round of the tournament with a 289 and holds a two-shot lead over Cleveland State. The Crusaders sit at 590 while CSU is at 592. Loyola is third with a 604, Green Bay fourth with a 606, Detroit fifth at 610, YSU sixth and Wright State is seventh at 627.

Redshirt freshman Bill Gaffney led the way on Saturday with a second-round 75 and is tied with five other golfers for 12th place with a two-round score of 152. He sits one shot out of the top 10 and five back from the top-five.

During Saturday's round, Gaffney had four birdies and three double bogeys on his way to a two-over par score. He birdied holes one, eight, 10 and 14 on the day. It was the second straight day he birdied the 10th hole, a 564-yard par-5.

D.J. Holub was even-par on the back nine and finished with a four-over par 76. He had birdies at 14 and 17, but had four bogeys and a double bogey in his round. He Improved four shots from Friday's opening round 80 and is tied for 23rd with a two-round 156. He has birdied No. 14 in each of his two rounds.

Bryan Yeo was in ninth place to begin the round, but now sits in 23rd place as well following an 80 on Saturday. He had one birdie, but battled through seven bogeys and a double bogey in the second round. He has a two-round total of 156.

Brandon Pluchinsky had a rocky front nine, but regrouped and played ever-par golf on the back nine. After bogeys on six of seven holes to end the front nine, he birdied No. 10 and had just one bogey on his final eight holes. His six-over-par 78, was a three-stroke improvement from round one. He moved up two places in the standings and sits in 27th place with a two-round 159.

Also tied for 27th with a 159 is Mark Olbrych. Olbrych also finished with an 80 on Saturday following a round that featured a birdie (No. 14), seven bogeys and a double bogey. He was just two-over par on the back nine.

The final round for the Penguins begins Sunday morning. Pluchinsky is the first Penguin to tee off at 7:30 a.m. while Yeo is the last one in the 8:10 a.m. grouping.
