Newman's Buzzer-Beater Gives Penguins 69-67 Win Over Milwaukee

Newman's jumper was the latest in season full of heroics by the Penguins. YSU won in the last five seconds for the fourth time this season, and it improved to 12-2 overall and 3-0 in Horizon League play. UWM drops to 6-7 overall and 0-2 in the conference.
The Penguins trailed 20-5 late in the first period and by seven in the third period before rallying. Nikki Arbanas made seven 3-pointers and tied her career-high with 25 points, and Indiya Benjamin posted 14 with five assists. Janae Jackson contribued 12 points, and Newman and Sarah Cash had six.
Steph Kostowicz came off the bench to score a team-high 14 points for Milwaukee, and six Panthers scored between seven and nine points. Kostowicz had six of UWM's 19 offensive rebounds, which the Panthers converted into 25 second-chance points.
Milwaukee went on an 18-1 run to turn a 4-2 deficit into a 20-5 lead with 11 seconds left in the first period. Arbanas hit her first of seven 3s at the buzzer to make the score 20-8 at the end of the period.
Two Benjamin free throws tied the score at 24 with 5:11 left, and YSU regained the lead at 26-25 on a Marissa Brown bucket with 4:36 left before halftime. That Brown basket capped a 21-5 run by the Penguins. UWM led by five twice in the final four minutes of the period, but YSU scored the final five points of the half to go into the locker room tied at 34.
Milwaukee scored nine straight points midway through the third period to take a 46-39 lead with 4:02 left. YSU outscored the Panthers 15-2 the rest of the period, and Arbanas hit 3s on back-to-back possessions to push the lead to 54-48 entering the fourth.
YSU did not trail in the fourth until Sydney Howard's triple at the 3:06 mark, and that was the first of six lead changes down the stretch. Milwaukee's final lead came at 67-66 when Alexis Lindstrom hit a 3 with 2:19 on the clock. Benjamin split a pair of free throws with 56 seconds remaining to tie the score, and Kostowicz missed on UWM's possession. YSU called timeout to set up a play with 24 seconds remaining, but Milwaukee was able to disrupt it. Newman responded to knock down a 15-footer as the horn sounded.
Youngstown State finished the game with 12 3-pointers on 28 attempts for 42.9 percent. Arbanas had seven, which was one shy of the school record, and Benjamin had three. Newman and Alison Smolinski both had one.
The Penguins will host Horizon League favorite Green Bay on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. It will be the first half of another doubleheader at Beeghly Center.
