A solid overall 40-minute effort by the Youngstown State women's basketball team kept them unbeaten in Horizon League play following an impressive 87-71 win over Milwaukee on Saturday afternoon at the Beeghly Center.
Four Penguins scored in double figures as Heidi Schlegel had 20, Liz Hornberger had 17, Monica Touvelle finished with 14 and Karen Flagg chipped in 11. The win was the fourth straight Horizon League win for the Guins, who are now 8-9 overall and 4-0 in HL play. Milwaukee falls to 5-11 overall and 1-2 in league action.
The Penguins connected on season-high tying 11 3-pointers in the contest and were 21-of-32 from inside the 3-point arc, which included 36 points in the paint. They had 20 assists on their 32 buckets. For the game the Guins shot a season-best 51.6 percent (32-for-62) while UWM made 43.8 percent (28-of-64).
YSU never trailed in the contest, and the game was tied just once at 7-7 just 3:50 into the contest at 7-7. From that point it was all Penguins.
After the game was tied at seven, the Guins scored the next five points and never looked back following a 3-pointer by Hornberger and layup by Latisha Walker. The Panthers crept within one on three occasions but could never wrestle the lead from the Guins.
At halftime the Guins led 45-37 thanks to a 54.5 percent shooting effort from the field.
In the second half, YSU came out quickly and surged to a 14-point lead at 51-37 following a Jenna Hirsch 3-pointer. However, UWM answered with 10 straight points to get within 52-47. But the Guins stablized things and went up by 11 just over 1:14 later on a Flagg basket.
Milwaukee kept its deficit under double digits just twice after Flagg's bucket with 15:02 remaining. The last was at 60-51 but a 3-pointer by Touvelle increased the lead to 12, Hirsch followed with a fast-break layup and Schlegel added a layup of her own to make it a 16-point contest.
YSU led by as many as 20 on three occasions at 79-59, 81-61 and 83-63.
Hirsch finished with a carer-high nine assists to go with eight points, and Schlegel and Flagg both had seven rebounds as YSU held a 36-28 edge on the glass.
Ashley Green finished with a game-high 25 points for Milwaukee, but YSU clamped down on her and limited her to four points in the final 16:30. Angela Rodriguez added 18 points, but she was also held to two points over the final 13 minutes. Milwaukee started 5-for-6 from the arc and finished 7-for-22.
YSU returns to action next Saturday when it plays host to Oakland. Tipoff is set for 4:35 p.m. prior to the YSU men's game against Wright State.
