Penguins’ Winning Streak Stopped at Green Bay, 60-46
Green Bay, Wis. -- Green Bay got off to hot starts offensively in both halves, and its defense kept the Youngstown State women's basketball team from making a second-half push in a 60-46 victory on Saturday afternoon at the Kress Events Center.

YSU's Brandi Brown scored a game-high 20 points on 7-for-11 shooting while battling foul trouble for the final 24 minutes. Liz Hornberger had 11, and Shar'Rae Davis added 10 for the Penguins.

The Penguins saw their six-game winning streak stopped with the loss and dropped to 17-6 overall and 7-3 in Horizon League play. Green Bay won for the 16th straight contest, improving to 21-2 overall and 11-0 in conference games. The Phoenix now holds a three-game lead atop the conference standings with five games remaining, and the Penguins move into a tie with Detroit for second place.

Green Bay led by as many as 10 early in the first half, but Youngstown State scored the next 11 points and led 21-20 with 7:51 on the clock. The Penguins did not make a field goal the rest of the period but still trailed just 30-25 at halftime.

The Phoenix then went on a 17-7 run in the first six minutes of the second half to go up 47-32, and YSU wasn't able to get closer than 12 the rest of the way.

The Penguins forced the Phoenix into 17 turnovers but were only able to convert those into nine points. YSU also attempted nine more free throws in the physical contest but was just 12-of-23 from the stripe. There were 42 fouls called in the game.

Sarah Eichler had 15 points on 7-for-10 shooting to lead Green Bay.

Both teams got off to blistering starts from the arc as seven of the first eight field goals in the game were 3-pointers, but the Penguins and Phoenix had their defenses take over as they combined to allow one field goal in the final 7:27 of the first half.

Green Bay scored the first five points of the game, but Hornberger hit a trey and Brown banked in another at the end of the shot clock as the Penguins took a 6-5 lead. That was the first of six lead changes in the opening period. Hornberger hit another triple to give YSU a 9-8 advantage, and the Penguins trailed just 11-10 after a Davis free throw with 15:20 left.

The Davis free throw came in the beginning of a stretch where YSU missed six straight field goals, and Green Bay took advantage to score nine straight points and take a 20-10 lead with 12:40 left. The Penguins, though, answered the bell and scored 11 consecutive points and took a 21-20 lead on a bucket by Brown with 7:51 remaining. That was their last field goal of the period.

Stephanie Sension scored five straight points for Green Bay to put the Phoenix back on top, and Lydia Bauer's 3-pointer with 3:58 remaining put them ahead 30-23. They did not score the rest of the half, and YSU split four free-throw attempts in the final three minutes to account for the 30-25 halftime score.

Similar to the first half, the Phoenix hit three 3-pointers in the first three minutes of the second period and led 41-30 on a Bauer trey. Karen Flagg made two free throws to cut the deficit to nine with 16:31 to go, but Green Bay scored the next six points to go up 47-32 at the 14:06 mark.

Green Bay led by at least 12 for the next seven minutes, but YSU made one last charge to get back in it. Eichler's bucket with 6:44 left gave Green Bay its largest lead at 57-39, but the Penguins scored the next six points to make the score 57-45 with just under five minutes left. Green Bay didn't allow another field goal the rest of the way, and Eichler stopped a three-minute scoring drought for Green Bay with 3:37 left to make the score 59-45. Each team hit a free throw for the final tally.

Green Bay made eight of its first 10 attempts in the first half and six of its first eight in the second half. Aside from those two stretches in the first 7:10 of the first half and the first 4:50 of the second half, the Phoenix shot 26 percent.

Youngstown State returns home to host Cleveland State on Thursday at 7:05 p.m.
