Hain Scores 1,000th Point in Loss to Milwaukee

Senior Shawn Amiker scored a game-high 23 points and junior Bobby Hain became the 36th player in school history to score 1,000 career points, but the Youngstown State men's basketball team fell to Milwaukee, 82-74, on Saturday night at the Beeghly Center.

Amiker made 8-of-16 field goals and had seven rebounds and sophomore Marcus Keene had 21 points to lead the Penguins, who fall to 11-20 overall and 2-14 in the Horizon League. Hain also posted his ninth double-double of the year with 13 rebounds. Senior DJ Cole added 13 points and four assists.

Leading Milwaukee, who finished the season with an overall mark of 14-16 and 9-7 in the league, was Matt Tiby with 22 points and 11 rebounds and Akeem Springs with 21 points. Steve McWhorter poured in 18 points while J.J. Panoske added 13 points.

The Penguins, who trailed by as many as 24 in the first half, erased a 19-point second half deficit and took a two-point lead, 69-67, with 5:19 left on a jumper by Hain.

Tiby answered with a 3-pointer and the Panthers pushed their lead back to five. Hain's three-point play with 2:14 left got the Penguins within 74-72, but the Panthers made eight straight free throws in the final 1:49 to seal the victory.

Youngstown State trailed by 17 at halftime but chipped the deficit down to seven midway through the second half. After the Panthers pushed the lead by to 12, Amiker made a free throw and a jumper to get within eight. Cole's three-point play, a jumper by Hain and a pair of free throws by Keene got the Penguins within one, 65-64, and Amiker's 3-pointer tied the game at 67-67 with 6:01 to go.

The Penguins made 15 of their first 30 shots in the second half to spark the comeback attempt after shooting just 28.1 percent in the first. Amiker scored 14 of his 23 after halftime while Hain scored 13 in the second half.

Hain scored his 1,000th point on a putback with 15:55 left in the game.

In the first half, the Panthers came out of the gate hot making six of their first seven shots, including their first five 3-pointers, and the Penguins made just one of their first nine field-goal attempts.

The Panthers, who shot 55.2 percent in the first half, scored the game's first eight points and led by 16, 20-4, with 14:34 left.

A 3-pointer by Cole at the 9:04 mark got the Penguins within 10, 30-20, but the Panthers used a 16-2 run over five minutes to extend the lead to a game-high 24 points, 46-22.

A three-point play by Amiker and four free throws by Keene cut the YSU deficit to 17, 46-29, at the intermission.

The Penguins are the eighth seed in the upcoming Horizon League Championship and will face Detroit, Tuesday, March 3, at 7 p.m. in Detroit, Mich.
