Penguins Beat Toledo 13-4
The Youngstown State baseball team scored the first five runs and pulled way with a five-run sixth inning to beat Toledo 13-4 on Wednesday afternoon at Scott Park.

The Penguins got six strong innings from freshman starting pitcher Jared Wight, who earned his first collegiate victory. Eight of YSU's starters either scored a run or posted an RBI, and Drew Dosch, Nick DiNello and Neil Schroth had three hits apiece.

Youngstown State beat Toledo for the fifth straight time dating back to 2008. The Penguins also matched their win total from all of last season with a more than a month remaining on their schedule.

Toledo's pitchers had control issues with nine walks, two hit batsmen and six wild pitches, and YSU took advantage immediately in the first inning by scoring twice without recording a hit. Mike Accardi and Jason Shirley walked to start the game and moved up a base on a wild pitch. Dosch brought in Accardi on a sacrifice fly, and Shirley scored on DiNello's ground out.

YSU then got three runs on one hit in the fifth to go up 5-0. David Saluga and Dan Popio walked to start the inning, and Saluga scored from second on Schroth's bunt single. Popio scored on back-to-back wild pitches, and Schroth came in when Phil Lipari drew a bases-loaded walk later in the inning.

Toledo cut into the lead with two runs on four straight hits to start the bottom of the fifth. After the two runs were in, Matt Delewinski's sacrifice bunt put runners on second and third with one out. Wight induced an infield pop up and a ground out to end the inning with the three-run lead.

The Penguins blew the game open with five unearned runs on five hits in the sixth. Shirley, Dosch, DiNello and Lipari had hits in succession during the inning, which was prolonged when Accardi reached on an error before any runs came in.

Toledo scored a run off reliever Robert Switka in the seventh to make the score 10-3, and Popio's two-run single for YSU in the eighth put the Penguins ahead 12-3. Dosch singled in Devin Higgins in the top of the ninth, and Toledo scored on a ground out in the bottom of the ninth.

Wight allowed two runs on seven hits in his six innings to improve his record to 1-1. Switka allowed the one run in two innings, and Erik Okleson was charged with the run in the ninth. Toledo starter Jared Locke allowed five runs on seven walks and three hits in four innings in the loss.

Youngstown State will begin a three-game series against UIC on Friday at 3 p.m. at Eastwood Field.
