Penguins Strand 12 in 6-1 Loss to Manhattan
The Youngstown State baseball team stranded 12 runners and grounded into three double plays in a 6-1 loss to Manhattan at Pitt's Charles L. Cost Field on Sunday morning. YSU lost game two of its doubleheader 16-1 to Pittsburgh.

The Penguins matched the Jaspers with 12 hits, with clean-up batter Marcus Heath registering three of those for YSU. Kris Moules, Phil Lipari and Devin Higgins had two hits apiece.

Brendan Slattery doubled in a run for Manhattan off YSU starter Ryan Krokos in the first, but the Penguins tied the score in the bottom half when Drew Dosch tripled and scored on Heath's single. Manhattan took the lead in the third on another RBI double by Slattery and a sacrifice fly by Kyle Murphy.

The Jaspers added single runs in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings.

The Penguins stranded two runners in the first, second, fourth, fifth and ninth innings, and they hit into double plays in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings. They had at least two base-runners in seven different innings.

Krokos allowed three runs on seven hits in five innings, and Jared Wight came in and allowed three runs on five hits in four innings.

Manhattan starter Matt Jordan allowed one run on nine hits and two walks while striking out six in six innings to earn the win.

The Panthers scored just two runs in the first five innings before blowing the game open late. Boo Vazquez brought in a run on a sacrifice fly in the first, and Stephen Vranka scored on a balk in the third. Pitt then scored five runs in the sixth and seven in the seventh. Six of the runs in the seventh came after there were two outs.

Dosch drove in Jason Shirley for YSU's run in the top of the eighth, and Pitt added two more runs to its total in the bottom of the eighth.

Robert Switka started for YSU and gave up two runs on five hits in two innings. Seven more pitchers made appearances for the Penguins.

Youngstown State will play one game at Coppin State on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
