Baseball Loses 5-3 at Pittsburgh in Rain-Shortened Game
The Youngstown State baseball team began a busy week by losing 5-3 at Pittsburgh on Tuesday evening in a game that was called in the bottom of the fifth inning due to rain.

The Penguins, who are scheduled to play five more games this week, trailed the Panthers 5-0 before scoring three runs in the top of the fifth. The rain delay began in the bottom of the fifth and lasted a little over 45 minutes before the remainder of the game was canceled.

Alex Larivee had one of three hits for Youngstown State, an RBI single in the three-run fifth. Lorenzo Arcuri also singled, and Billy Salem doubled for the Penguins.

Nick Yarnall homered and singled to lead Pitt’s five-hit attack. He hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the first that gave the Panthers a 2-0 lead, and Ron Sherman’s RBI single in the third made the score 3-0. Pitt added two runs in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single by Jacob Wright and a double steal.

Youngstown State’s three runs in the fifth came on just one hit. Shane Willoughby was hit by a pitch with one out, and he scored three batters later on Larivee’s two-out single. Arcuri and Larivee then scored on wild pitches.

Pitt used three pitchers in the five innings. Winning pitcher Collin Liberatore left with one out in the fourth after allowing two hits and a walk. Jesse Slinger pitched the four official innings for Youngstown State, allowing four runs on five hits while striking out two batters.

Youngstown State will be back on the road on Wednesday when it plays at Bowling Green at 3 p.m.
