Califano is a junior outfielder from Alpine, California, and North is a senior from Barberton, Ohio. This is the first time that either player has earned the Horizon League's weekly award. The pair helped Youngstown State beat Bowling Green on Tuesday and win two of three games against league-leading Wright State over the weekend.
Califano batted .529 and posted a 1.203 OPS as the leadoff hitter for the Penguins during the week. He had hits in all four games, including posting multiple hits three times, while scoring five runs and posting two RBIs. In YSU's 13-3 victory over the Raiders on Saturday, Califano tied his career high with four hits and added a walk and a stolen base. Califano has hit safely in 15 consecutive Horizon League games and is batting .384 in conference contests this season.
North was the winning pitcher in two of the Penguins' three victories last week. He went four innings as the starter against Bowling Green and allowed a run on two hits before leaving to keep his arm ready for the weekend. North then pitched four innings out of the bullpen against Wright State on Sunday and held the Raiders to a run on one hit and a walk.
Youngstown State continues its eight-game homestand on Wednesday as it tries to sweep the season series with Akron. First pitch against the Zips is set for 5:30 p.m. YSU will then begin a three-game Horizon League series versus Oakland on Friday at 11 a.m.
